Well, all kales are very attractive. The color and the ruffled leaves of Redbor are very nice indeed, especially as the color really deepens during the chill of late autumn.

I'm not personally a big kale eater -- I put bits of it into mixed soups such as minestrone type soups in the autumn and winter, but don't really use all that much.

I really haven't found much difference between various kales by the time they are chopped and cooked. I don't know if one type would sell better than the other or not.

I grow a lot of different kales, but generally feed most it to my birds.

I tried Redbor, but I have grown Red Russian for five years. It looks similar, except not as frilly, and it is exceptionally cold-hardy and makes a most excellent potatoe-kale soup. The thought of it is making my stomach rumble at the moment.

I too prefer Russian to Redbor. It is the cold hardiness. Russian has a more uncertain germination than other kales, IME. We have different opinions, to me kale is the best deep winter vegetable, I would only give the stems to the chickens. Leaves for me only. I grow four types and I like them all.

I googled images of Redbor Kale and the pics were every color from red to blue. What color is it?

This summer I allowed a single Red Russian kale (planted last year) go to seed, and now I have dozens of seedlings that I am transplanting. I'll probably draw the line at about 40 though!

I'm becoming a big fan of letting a plant go to seed to get no fuss transplants. So far I've only done it intentionally with parsley and kale, but also have arugula and turnip greens growing wild.

This gardeners agree with glib about where the kale gets used. Our chickens get the thick central veins of the leaves, any overgrown leaves, or leaves that have too many green cabbage worms for me to deal with. The rest gets gently cooked--so good and nutritious!

I've always thought Winterbor was the most cold hardy kale. I've been growing it for years, a very huge, handsomeplant that usually overwinters, supplying a great flush of very early spring greens. BTW, I'm zone 6.

I apologize for my tardiness. I was having a baby the day you posted the ?. I planted Redbor Kale this year, mid springtime and love it. Its great raw but also as a substitute for cabbage in cabbage rolls. I let the crinkly edges get crispy so it was like kale chips (redbor is the best for them in my opinion as they keep their shape great) and the purple veins softened a bit during baking. I loved the kale so much I needed to find out more about the wonderfully diverse veggy. I bought Tree Kale and Walking Stick Kale the other day. Hope they take and that you love your redbor as much as I do mine. I'm still harvesting!
