my newest weed pot

It's almost finished. Teeth are pieces of tile, yes the lips are red cement. Oh did I mention the weed pot is made completely of cement (except the eyes of course)? This was an experiment in sculpting cement using several different techniques. It stands 12".As a prototype it came out okay - still needs ears - so as soon as I refine what I'm doing I'll make more.

'Dortmund', 'Veilchenblau' and 'CrÃ©puscule' are climbers; the first two are hardy; 'CrÃ©puscule' is somewhat tender, though I would think it would do all right in zone 7--I'm guessing. You probably ought to protect it its first winter at least; and if you have a wall for it to grow against it would probably appreciate it. 'CrÃ©puscule' is fairly shade tolerant but shouldn't go in a dank cold spot or one where it will be exposed to winter winds. All three will need support unless you want to grow them as truly huge shrubs (my 'CrÃ©puscule' is currently about 10' x 15' and asking for more real estate). 'Veilchenblau' is once-flowering, I believe. I don't know 'Peggy Martin'. 'Frau Karl Druschki' is a famous old white Hybrid Tea which I've never seen in person, and 'Rose de Rescht' is a fairly low-growing, red, tough old rose--my brain is frying; I think it's either a Portland or a Damask: both FDK and RDR are reflowering and are different from one another in style: not two roses to grow side by side. I don't know how these roses will do in your area nor what kind of soil and sun you have in your yard. These are some ideas to start with. I agree you should get them in the ground now, in nice big holes. Don't give them a high nitrogen fertilizer at this point: it would encourage them to put on a lot of new growth that would then be killed by frost. Good luck! Melissa

Good morning, Andrew! My eyes were just deceiving me... ;) I thought I saw a "club" shaped leaf on your Jade...but it was just the angle of the leaf. The 'Hummel's Sunset' is a very distinctive Jade (most of the year). Growing conditions, as well as seasonal variation, can dramatically impact the look. What we need is a Jade Archive, where one can reference images of Jades by month and geographic region. Moccasin, thank you so much for your profuse compliments. The "bones" of my gardens are perennials, filled out by various annuals each year. I mix in some Plant-tone and Osmacote when I prepare the soil before any plants have emerged. I stoop over and pull out any weeds that I see, as my plots are small enough to do that. It's very funny that you should mention smiles and hand waves from neighbors. I live down the street from one of the major city colleges. Not only do any and all neighbors nod and smile when they see me out watering my gardens (well, THAT'S not necessary tonight, major rainstorm going on right now and a floodwatch), but a great deal of the passing students compliment me as well. That makes me feel like I'm doing a community service. I was just thinking as I walked out this morning that since I started my elaborate gardens, more and more of the neighbors on my side of the street have taken the plunge. I am definitely seeing more garden plots being planted, both in front of the Obligatory Bushes, and in the soil squares located in the courtyards (some buildings are in courtyards here, some merely line the street like mine). I cannot say whether more people are gardening because they saw my gardens and got inspired, or if it was a case of convergent thinking. But my gardens do seem to be an epicenter, outward from which I see the newly planted gardens (even if it's just a row of petunias or such) up this year. If so, hurray! We all need more flowery beauty and the peace it brings in our lives. Gesila, the only heuchies I've had so far were Marmalade and Georgia Peach. As you can see, Marmalade is doing fabulously. The original Georgia Peach specimen wasn't the best one, it was the last one the local nursery had. This may well have contributed to its not making it through the winter. The nursery told me that since my new GP in its 12" pot is in a sheltered location, in the lee of the Obligatory Bushes, a bit of sheltering bubble wrap or such should be sufficient to get it through winters. I am thrilled that all my new baby heuchies are really growing apace, faster than my small hostas. I hope the baby heuchies continue in their robust health!! Maybe with Garden Cat watching over them, they will. Garden Cat's origin came from my spotting this adorable wire cat face on the 75% off table with other Halloween stuff. Finding just the right pot as a backdrop was quite a bit harder. I think I went to 4 stores/nurseries before luck drew my eye to the perfect white pot. All right, it wasn't on sale, but I bought it anyway because it was perfect for my Garden Cat.

Heck with it being a prototype. This is just toooo neat just the way it is!

So, some of you experiment with cement (Calamity J)?
And I was afraid to show my faux cement rocks because I didn't think it was considered garden junk because they are just rocks.
But so neat to know others use cement to decorate their gardens!

How do you keep the color Red so brilliant?
Whenever I've tried using cement colorant, the colors turn very dull and muddy. Almost as if I don't have colorant in the cement at all.
Only way to get at least the appearance of color in my cement is to use almost a whole bag of colorant for just a little bit of mixed cement.
Way too expensive for me.
Would you mind sharing how you used/what you used to color the cement red?

Um...PurpleMoon, as hard as it might be to understand, there are some people that just don't get enjoyment from 'just rocks'. *grin*

My friends in real life and extended family....
I asked them this past weekend to come outside and check out my new haul.

Of course I was almost jumping up and down with excitement.
They followed me out back.
With the giggling and excitement of a little girl with her first precious dolly, I pointed to my pile.
"Look! Aren't they beautiful ! ? "

I could tell the minute BIL and nephew rolled their eyes at each other what was coming next. Sure enough...

Nephew= "Ummmm, Ami? It's........ a pile of........ rocks! THAT'S what you're so excited about?"

Me= Noooo, not just 'rocks'. Beautiful rocks and lots of them have at least one flat side to place planters on!"

BIL= Uh huh. Like I said....Pile o' rocks.

I turned and went a few feet to the garden hose all the while excited and while spraying the pile of rocks with the hose said "Look how beautiful! The colors really show themselves when the rocks are wet. Beautiful, huh? !"

More eyerolling. Then I heard my son say "Humor her. It'll go a lot quicker."

So, in new company I don't rave about rocks. But let me find out the new company likes rocks and you won't be able to shut me up --- much like I'm doing in this thread.

I love it! Robert, if that is just a prototype, you probably want to make more that fullfills your vison. Want to send that to me so that you can get it out of your way?

Amity, I love your stories. My DD gives me that 'look' when I try to show her my treasures. I can't complain too much though as she helped me get some rocks for my yard this spring.

This is an awesome piece!!! I absolutely love it and it's going to be just fantastic planted and placed in your gardens. I can't get over how great it looks - I don't think it even needs ears, I think it's done now! Please post a pic of it in your garden once it's planted, thx.

Very interesting! Reminds me of the primitive art down here. I love it! Check out George Ohr, "The Mad Potter of Biloxi", I think you'd love the story of him and his works :P

You are definitely one creative person. I can just see about 50-100 years from now one of those popping up on Antiques Roadshow. They'll say, yeah, we've seen these pots before. This is a great example of Folk Art Pottery, but made with non traditional material. Make sure you sign your pieces. They will be worth a lot!

amity - I think you and I should be neighbor's and BFF....

I have rocks and then I have ROCKS! They are all handpicked and they are beautiful.

Anyone who walks through my garden with an eye for rocks, loves them too... there are not a lot of people who take the time to really look and enjoy their beauty, but I know just how you feel about them!

I never go anyplace without bringing at least one new rock back home for my garden, and living here in the Colorado Rocky Mountains I have ga-zillons to choose from!

I do have two favorite rock gardens that are full of petrified wood that I brought home from my cousin's ranches in North Dakota. Talk about some beauties!! They are just fieldstone and a big pain for them, so they always happily load me up whenever I go for a visit.

Here in Colorado there are a few petrified wood beds, but they are off limits to rock hounds. In North Dakota it is overly abundant, and the farmers/ranchers have no place to stack it anymore to get it out of their way, so they are more than happy to send it away - WOOO-HOOO!!

You should have turned that hose on the family.. that'd learn 'em!

Sherril, I am totally jealous of your rock hunting places.
And would LOVE to just see your yard. I started picking up rocks soon as I could walk I think. LOL. And my family laughs that they can't take me anywhere that I'm not keeping an eye for one or more to bring home! And now I can't travel at all, I have to ask my 3 grown kids to bring me a rock when they go somewhere. They STILL think its nuts, and usually they forget on top of that. Dang. I don't need store-bought presents, just rocks or wood makes me happier than diamonds would. Why is that so hard to understand? LOL. Everytime we moved, I insisted my rocks had to come. I was not a popular person over that one.

I think he would make a very good watch pot! lol! I agree with desertrat1 that some day your stuff will be collector items.

Like so many of you, I just love rocks. I'm trying to think ... I bet the bathroom is the only room without some sort of rock in it unless pumice counts and that's only because I haven't found just the right rock. I too love rocks and understand the weird looks one gets when you collect them. Who else eyes up the rocks in the planting bed at the local McDonald's while waiting in the drive thru?

I also love to skip them on water!

wow I love it. I bought some clay about a month ago to try and make a face pot....but could not do it. :( so I started buying funny face cups and vases and thing to use. I wish I could do what you have done. truly wonderful.

Whoa Robert, I just love it the way it is...I think it has more character without the ears..It reminds me of primitive paintings..

I agree about rocks......I love rocks...each one is so unique in it's own way and if you look at it you can see the beauty in them......Wish I could find rocks down here in florida...Just like my collecting seashells for years...I pick just certain ones that really have beauty to them, and they are not always in perfect form..Guess like they say: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,.. heh...

Juets......I love your "funny faces" they are just too adorable!

Hubby is buying me cement later tonite so I can start "experimenting" myself...haha ..The only things I've cemented so far were out of a box with grandkids...did two stepping stones one for each with their handprints, etc...That was so much fun. Looking forward to seeing more "rock art" on here as well....de

If "ears" became handles, and the Antique Road Show comes to your area, take it. Bet they'll show it as a "fake" clay jar by Dave, the Slave! At least, you'll get to see their reaction. LOL Why is it called a Weed Pot though?

And, yes, it is reminscient of the Mad Potter of Biloxi! (We're addicted to Antique Road Show! LOL)

As for rocks, depends on how big you're talking if what I do is considered the same. Got a container garden on our small concrete backyard, plus boulders are just too much for me to tackle -- but "rock collecting" kinda runs in the family. My older brother just had to stop and found a new career. He was a stone mason, who loved making decorations in his fireplaces. (His had a sun.) He drove everywhere in an old, beat-up flatbed truck, because that's how he got the boulders needed for a job. He lives in central VA, and has collected boulders every day, practically, for 50 years. (Strong as an ox, but very quiet.) His "rocks" were generally 25-50 pounds, at least. Even when he came to visit Dad in PA, he'd work towards emptying Dad's wooded lot of all boulders, and took them home each time. Good thing Dad was never crazy about the rock garden the previous owners had. LOL

Most people collect souvenirs from a vacation at a gift shop. My husband takes me to a stony beach (what, purplemoon, Florida has no stones on your beaches? Weird! LOL), or dirt roads with wild flowers, so I can gather my two favorite souvenirs -- a bouquet of wild flowers to enjoy on our vacation (usually the vase is an empty pepsi bottle LOL), and "cool stones" that I bring home. Don't know if hubby thinks I'm nuts about this (he knows I'm nuts, in general), but he's found some cool looking rocks, too. I've found white, mauve, black and blue streaked, perfectly ovaled, and quartz like stones. (I can't believe anyone skips stones, since, if they're skippers, they're too cool to toss! LOL) My rock collection goes out into my portable butterfly drinking hole (a terra-cotta saucer with rocks and water in it on our "plantstand" - round plastic child's picnic table) and the rest go into the one souvenir I did buy out of a shop -- a large handblown glass, so you can see all the rocks, and some cool shells, too!

I can't do cement either. Don't know from experience, just know this beat-up old body can't lift up anything heavier then 12 pounds, and can't lean over much anymore, so can't even dream of that as another hobby. Thanks for the pictures though! Been wanting some crazy faces out in my garden as planter, especially for my succulents, and you've just taught and showed me how!

As far as where we beach (Clearwater)........it's miles of white sand......We do have huge boulders built for "jetty's", but as far as "rocks"...never seen any there..Also have tall grass to help hold the sand in place.. I'm not too keen going thru woody areas looking for rocks either..lol....I'm seriously going to ask our daughter and future son in law to stop from time to time and see if they can get some on there way down here next year. I only got one from Michigan so far which I'm using to hold books in place..
