Could it be that the company was out of the seed when you orginally ordered the seed? When I place my seed orders, they always ask me if they are out ,if I want seeds shipped at a later date. If it will arrive too late for me, I say no. If thats the case, they would send the seed even if it is too late to plant in your area. I find it is usally, plants and seed potoaes, that are shipped at planting times for your area. People will order seeds mid-season for planting next year, so the seed company doesn't know when you intend to plant.

Alielisa: Murky is probably quoting me. I think I am the spoil-sport that said it is nearly impossible to grow watermelons, including Sugar Babies, in pots. That's because it is. If you are happy growing watermelon vines and hoping, that's fine. But watermelons are not in your future. It would be better to grow something in those pots that would really produce, like sweet peppers, or even hot peppers if you like those. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA

I thought I waited until the right time to pick my only ripening sugar baby melon last year and it too was yellow. I was told on another forum to wait about a week after the tendril turns before picking. Other melons seem to be ripe when the tendril turns but not sugar baby. I had a second tiny one appear and it was so close to ripening when the temps dropped really low. I picked it late one night when it appeared that even under cover, it would freeze. It was almost ripe. I ate it anyway (I did share it with the dog though, but it got eaten darn it!). Mine didn't grow at all this year so I can't say I got to test out the advice... Hi! I'm not sure this is the right forum to post this, but I see some people have asked stuff on watermelons here before, if there is a better place to ask, do let me know. I have a Sugar Baby watermelon vine that is about 3 months old. The problems are: a) It's august; b) it's 15 cm long. It seemed to perk up a bit with recent rains, but people have told me it's too late to actually get some harvest. I live in NE Mexico, 6 hours below of Texas. Our winters are usually mild. Usually, they range from 14°F to 60°F. It may hail, but snow it's very, very rare, and only on high altitudes (where I'm not). To give you some context, last year I accidentally started a tomato vine too late. It held up until January and gave a single, undersized tomato, and it could've lived longer, but I just yanked it up to save it from it's misery, it definitely was not happy. My point is, it survived. Do you think mine could make it? Since it's so small, I could actually bring it inside, even? Would it produce by next summer if I put it on the ground in the spring? Thanks for your attention and advice!
