old glass windows

a friend is renovating old house and will be replacing ALL old windows -- every one of them is a set of old glass multi-pane windows and a one-piece storm window in the front. I always read about people using old pane windows for cold frame/green house purpose. Do you use just the pane windows or the storm windows too? The storm windows are on a thin white plastic-looking frame, so I am not sure how I can secure/attach them to any frame. Any ideas? pictures of what you've done?

Storm windows should have a lip on the edge that has screw holes in it to attach to framing, at least my storm windows did.

Here are some pics of the greenhouse that my husband and I built out of old windows and doors. Ours all had frames except one (in the middle of the side) and we fitted it in a empty spot using trim. We just kind of put them together like a puzzle.

Keriann- these haven't been pinched and they are growing very stocky. They are 'Peach Butterfly' from park. I usually buy all my impatiens for the beds but these are for baskets- so I wanted something different. They were planted the first of Feb- I'm actually shocked that they are this dense- must be the variety? Only fertilized once with MG but the potting mix has the usual fertilizer that they all want to put in everything now. Here are some coleus just transplanted that are not on the mat- temps are rising now and don't need it thank goodness. They were on it though. Dear Lisa0527: It is not a custom top. Those marble console sinks are so expensive and I had to keep it tight. SH made the most inexpensive version, and one that was only 2' wide -- that's all the space I had. I investigated buying the top and legs separately, and I did find an online seller that was offering the chrome base at a good price -- but, once I started pricing the marble top-- materials, labor -- the total went right back up to the SH price. That said, I don't think the SH marble is the best quality, but it's a good value. I wasn't worried about the thickness of the stone -- this is a powder room, so it doesn't get the workout of a main bathroom -- it's more about the nature of marble itself -- easily etched, a bit softer than granite. This marble was not very white, but again, it was good for the price. I'm happy with it.

For your safety, I would have these windows professional handled by a furniture refinisher, although it will be expensive. It does require very delicate treatment to prevent damage with these old windows. There is a strong possibility of lead based paint and requires special care in the sanding and scraping process. Lead dust can be hazardous to your health. You can purchase a lead test kit in Lowe's, Home Depot, or a paint store. All paint companies produce a pamphlet regarding lead based paint if you want to attempt this project. I would have all the paint removed and primed and painted or stained if possible. I would highly recommend that if you attempt this process to mask the stained glass thoroughly or preferably remove the glass if possible to prevent any damage. Good luck on the project.

I would call the company and complain,complain,complain. Threaten them with reporting them to the BBB, State Attorney General etc... They make caulk that can be used below 40 degF, As I purchased a tube yesterday and used it. It was a tube of GE co-polymer sealant. Good down to 5 degF. Tommy silva recomends using a tri-polymer sealant that is used at low temperatures and damp conditions. If this guy is a window installer he should know about these different caulks. Geocel makes a caulk that can be used to -10F (link below) Get your window installer to buy some of this and tell him to get off his butt and put the window in. use the link and click on technical data, a PDF file A local replacement window installer works year round and he must use a caulk that works at low temperatures. Oh man, I forgot how awesome your greenhouse is..and you are owned by a choo-hua-hua too!!!I call mine a were-wowa and he howls when I say it!!!lol!
What a great score, all those wonderful windows!!! I may have to scroundge some and make something....maybe add them to a pergola I plan to make....
If you search this forum(use the search window) type in greenhouses and you will see some pretty amazing window greenhouses...

Frou I *love* your greenhouse, your potting bench, and your little doggie guarding the greenhouse! Is he/she a long haired chihuahua or a pomeranian? That is one cute little pooch! Great picture too.

I thought they were called chi's for short. Loved Bev Hill Chihuahua! George Lopez was the best! My g/f has 3 chi's and she makes them sing and dance and say momma!
My g/f was going to build a greenhouse out her old windows as well and never made it. I wonder if still has them...thinking thinking thinking...hmmm wonder if she would give them to me...? LOL.
