A Yellow Push Mower and Other Rusty Treasures!

I was mowing today and saw my old, yellow, rusty, push mower in my iris garden. I remembered I had promised to post a picture a few weeks back of my $5 home salvage yard find. So, I ran and got my camera! The funny thing is I didn't know what color the iris plants were in this garden because the plants were a gift from a friends' garden, and I never saw them in bloom. Also, the deer always bite the flowers off before they bloom! That's not very nice! LOL So, you can imagine my excitement this week when I saw the iris plants were yellow (The deer haven't eaten them yet!) and they match my yellow mower! It doesn't take much to get me excited! HA! I pulled the mower out of the garden so you could see it, but it usually sits back among the iris.

A few other rusty finds...I had posted the following 2 pictures before but they were at the very end of a post which went to Never, Never Land. LOL Thought I'd share them again in case you missed my rusty treasures!

This is my rusty wheelbarrow... I bought it last summer at a garage sale. It was Sunday evening and the lady was just closing up her sale... no one had wanted the wheelbarrow, and I got it for $5! What a treasure!

And here is my rusty garden cart a friend picked up for me "curb shopping." His wife wouldn't let him keep it so he gave it to me. I planted it with Hens and Chicks and placed it in front of an ugly electrical post by our road coming in to prevent people from running over that post! LOL Kirk

Very nice photos! Love the rusty stuff, very nice rocks as well! I have surprise iris too, I got some from a friend and they were either brown, purple, or white - turned out purple! :)

Looks great Kirk! I'm having an iris obsession these days as I'm a new gardener and irises seem to be Jane Resistant!LOL! Lovin' those yellow babies!! And don't you think you are confusing the deer??! They see that mower in the bed, so figure they'd help you "mow" down your irises!LOL! I LOVE the Wheelbarrow and the planted one too!! $5, what a score!!!

I thought the lawnboy line was dropped all together...? I had a Honda Harmony from a dealer the 1st or 2nd year it came out...nothing but issues with cables and the tranny...most covered under warranty. Again, it was NOT a HD model and was expensive for its time ($650 or so as I recall) Plus Side: road smoothly (cadilac like over grass) quiet not smokey very good mulcher Eventually I switched to a Toro Personal Pace from a dealer, again the first year they came out. They were a bit cheaper. Within a month they put a new shortblock on it...it was blowing blue smoke. They also had to replace something with a wheel under warranty. I have had no adjustment issues. It has a rather bumpy ride but also mulches quite well. It is also a lot lighter than the honda. I really like the feature where it goes as fast as you walk. Pulling it backwards takes some getting used to. It does not have the blade stop / engine idle the Harmony had. It seems smellier to me too...it does not hav an OHV engine--the honda did...not sure if that makes a difference. Both were easy to service each year. I would go with whichever brand has a DEALER who can service it for you if the need arises. I would avoid the HD models unless they are dirt cheap on clearance, they seem to be cheapie reproductions of the real thing...ie the Personal Pace has really cheap looking wheels and I believe a cheap deck...steel not aluminum. My Dad bought a second (backup) Honda from HD (to back up his dealer bought Harmony model---which I might add he has never had trouble with....go figure) The self propel mechanism or something went. He took it to the dealer who said the HD models were throw aways and that the tranny was not worth replacing...who knows. Try to by from your local dealer who can service it, maybe you can even pick up 2 quality used moweres for the price of a new one. Good luck.

I can understand why they don't have a hitch on the back! Just think how many law suits they'd have, if dumbo's installed a tow hitch, hooked up a cart, then went on to use it like they did with their old, conventional lawn tractor, etc. Would they try backing it with the cart on it? Oh, yes they would! And, do you think that just possibly they might turn the machine over right quick? Oh, yes! And, do you think the owner would sue the mower maker for his injuries, after the thing tipped over? Oh, yes! The fact that a tow hitch is not installed keeps the law suits from happening. And the mfgrs. know that. And, if you did install a towing hitch, that will nullify the guarantee's and any chance you would have to sue for injuries or damages. Altering anything kills chances of suing, in most cases. I'm not a lawyer, but those are the things/reasons why they don't install a tow hitch/bar/rear plate on a zero turn mower! JMHO: Rusty Jones

A lady called and said she was bringing her brand new Toro lawn mower in because the starter was stuck, and the rope wouldn't pull out! They said they had installed the push handle bars, but it only turned a half a turn, and then it wouldn't turn any further. So, after they left and thinking about sitting around all day which would be BORING, i set about finding out what was the problem. First, i checked the oil--bone dry! New machinery is usually shipped minus any fluids. So, i added the right amount of oil. Then off came the plug wire. I then tried to turn the flywheel by hand. It turned about a half a turn and went "CLANK"! HMMM?? Turning the mower up to one side, i immediately saw the problem: The handle bars were made in three pieces. The long U-shaped upper part, and two shorter pieces which bolted to the handle bar brackets down by the rear wheels, and then the u-shaped piece was bolted to them! BUT--- Where the side pieces were bolted to the deck, there were holes clear thru the deck, and when the lower handle bar tubes slid down to be bolted on, they would slide clear down, and be hit by the blade! And, if ya didn't know that, you could find holes to bolt the upper handle-bar part on, but the whole handle bar would be much lower than normal. And, anybody who had no experience with this stuff, would think they should take the thing back to where they bought it! Tomorrow, i am going to paint the side tubes where they go into the brackets, so they don't make that mistake again. Maybe, a couple hose clamps might be better. The lady sez her son (around 35) has no mechanical ability, and thats why the thing got put together the way it was. I also told her about the dry shipping, so she wouldn't have another problem with any other powered machine. Any way, i started it and it runs well. Good thing the son installed the bars wrong, at least he didn't start it with no oil in it! WHEW!

Most of us here are not interested in pushing a reel mower around our usually large lawns. That said--i was in our local large old-time hardware store recently, and they had one reel mower there, which looked like a good model to buy and use. I don't think there are very many types of reel mowers out there just yet, although that could change, if our esteemed law-makers decide us citizens have too much ready cash to buy gasoline for powered rotary mowers! One problem with reel type mowers--the guys who could sharpen and adjust them have mostly gone to the great lawns in the sky, and a lot of their machinery has been dropped on offending foreign countries, in the form of bombs, etc. We didn't give the Arabs the mowers and machinery, because they don't grow grass there, so no need for reel mowers, or any other kind, although, they do have one very efficient type of mower. It is called a goat, or sheep. Very efficient, and no problem when they no longer eat the grass-the owner eats the mower! That said, have you investigated the electric rotary mowers? I have several here, one a Black & Decker, the other a Craftsman. They are light, easy to push, only hum as they mow, and you get exercise! And usually, you end up with a bunch of un-connectable short electric cords because you didn't pay attention to the job at hand. So, investigate and decide on what type of exercise you want to indulge in. Me? I prefer to ride, and get 'er done quickly, then sit back with a brewski, and watch the guy next door as he pushes his old reel type mower, all the while monkeying with it to get a stick or dog bone out of the works! by:Rusty Jones

I forgot to save plants for my wheelbarrow, so need to get some annuals to finish that project yet. I love the look of yours Kirk! I've really enjoyed your many photos on this site. You're an imaginative, creative guy.

Thanks for the nice compliments! I love gardening and "junking" and combining the two! This forum and all of my GardenWeb Junking friends motivate me! Calamity, you had me roaring with your comment about the deer! HA! My question is... why won't the deer ever mow the grass...just my plants!? GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! LOL Kirk

Great junk, Kirk! Love it all. I tend to curb shop all my wheelbarrows. Have 3 now and recently passed up another one - DH thinks I have enough rusting away! HA! And I just bought a whole bunch of bulbs and 10 new irises of various colors for the garden. Love irises. My narcissuses, um narcissi?? What the heck is the plural for that word??!! Well, they're already up and flowering - a month early! Think the way you used that barrow thing your friend gave you wonderful - you don't even notice the electric post.

Went outside today and the deer were slowly approaching my iris lawn mower garden. I shooed them away, and then sprayed an egg soluntion on the iris plants. Bad deer! LOL Kirk

Love it all as usual!!!! We are lucky soo far the dear are staying at bay.... but I have seen a little rabbit hangin around...He'd better not eat my green bean plants!!!

love your lawnmower and your deer story(-: I have had my share of deer here too...one was a pet I raised on a bottle...lol They do tend to clean house on a garden though...yikes. I have a lawnmower like yours too but its all rusty I think it was originally red. I stuck it in a planter and its been there ever since. I always wanted to do something with it but never thought of an idea. I commented about your wheelbarrow on another post(-: Your yard is so pretty. I love seeing all your pictures.(-:

I like the lawnmower in first pix where it can be really be seen, with the yellow iris' as a backdrop. Wonderful.
I'd commented on the other two great items in previous post.
I want a wheelbarrow so bad.

The only thing rusting around here is ME.

I paid $15 for a wheel just like the one on our $5 wheelbarrow and I thought THAT was a steal! Love the yellow mower. Wheres your sign to MOW TOWN ??????

Love all of it. I am really kicking myself (again) for getting rid of a wooden wheelbarrow I had for over 15 years and finally said the heck with it. The wood was rotting out in the bottom. I didn't even think to tip it over and plant flowers as if they were flowing out of it. Dummy me, I gotta stop doing that.
