HUGE curb shop weekend

Howdy ALL!!

As you may recall twice a year down Melbourne way we have what's known as 'hard trash' day. It's the time when we get to throw out all those items that don't fit in our garbage cans (but here they're called wheely bins HA)

So Saturday DH and I went major curb shopping in town and found some amazing stuff!

Someone acually threw away this table and 4 benches. I only picked up 3 cuz the fourth was pretty destroyed. The only thing wrong with the table is the Lazy Susan doesn't work all that well - no biggy. Against one of the benches is a turtle someone carved out of cedar. I think it's kinda cool and I'll just prop it up against something - don't know what yet.

Then we found these benches. Some of the feet have rot but otherwise they're perfect.

Don't know what the metal thing is, but I'll use it as a table. It does suit being used as a bird feeder but we'd only get cockatoos then and those birds are pretty destructive so I try to keep them off the property. I picked up the lamp to get the cool ceramic bead in the center, and the mirror can go just about anywhere.

Then late Sunday I asked DH if we could scour around our streets. He said we had to check out the town again cuz when he had gone to get the paper he saw some things he thought I'd like. He waited all day to tell me!! I said the stuff could be gone by now but he said not to worry. When we got to the place he'd seen in the morning I almost jumped outta the car before he even stopped. Now I know I've made a bed bench already but I've really been wanting to find a curb shopped head and footboard and THERE THEY WERE!! I was almost in HEAVEN!! And then I saw what was next to the bed... this gorgeous wicker chair! OMGosh! It was almost too much for me!

But I was still feeling like a glutton and wanted more so we then went back to our place and looked around the streets there. And there it was, my final curb shop for the day (It was getting dark already), this beautiful wrought iron rocking chair. There's nothing wrong with it except for a bit of rust. DH says he likes this best out of all the finds.

So this morning I was too excited about the wicker chair and I had to plant it up and put it in situ straight away. For now it holds a pot of begonia rex but I may switch it come next summer and put a pot of geraniums in it.

Holly Cow you reallyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy scored big time!!!!! My favorite things are the wicker chair and the iron rocker. Those are so beautiful!!!! I love everything though, you did great! I still can't get over what people throw out. It just amazes me! I guess some people can't appreciate the old stuff(-: I like old stuff a lot better then new because it has so much character!!!!! The bed is cool to. Are you planning on making a bench?

You found some treasures! We are having our county-wide clean-up this week. I'll have to go curb shopping. I don't expect to find anything that good. Sounds like you had fun too.

Gee, daily diving? That would make it less special....JK. Methinks our dump is afraid of idiots getting hurt or in the way of machinery and then suing. I"ve lived here 8 years and never heard of them letting folks shop. So, perhaps we are turning a corner. :-) One day I was out walking and found a 3 foot tall plaster jaguar. But it slipped out of my hands and cracked. Wah! Twas too heavy for me to lug home anyhow, but my daughter would have loved it in her room.

Ellen - that does sound heavenly, but the only problem is we sit on top of a huge hill and there's not a speck of shade except under a few little trees in the yard!! I will probably use some of the pieces separately as an accept in my beds - right now is a good time to place them as plants are just awakening and can grow up around it. I may place one in the middle of my daisies and black eyed Susans. May use 2 to form a corner bed somewhere also. I'm still thinking...... Arlene

Sounds great! I love old painted finishes. I was eyeing up a stool at a flea market yesterday that had about 6 layers of paint on it. The result was a marbling effect in green and robin's egg blue with a little rust for good measure. Call me crazy but I thought it was a work of art. lol! If I had felt like carrying it back to the car (which was a few blocks away) I would have bought it. But free is even better! Glad you had some success this weekend!

WTG! (or WTKG?-- way to keep going). It sounds like the dumpster was well worth it. After DH and I bought our house, it seemed like everybody and his brother was renovating a house and the local waste management places did not have any dumpsters to rent out. We needed to get rid of a houseful of carpet and padding. Fortunately, the backyard is enclosed and we live in a place where it doesn't rain much (and didn't that whole summer), so we ended up slicing up the carpet and filling the big, rolling garbage bin about halfway with carpet each week-- for weeks and weeks on end. We did eventually get rid of it, but I'm always reminded about how you eat an elephant, one bite at a time. You can't do everything with a regular trash can, but you can do a lot! Especially if you pace yourself. The Barbies sound important to you. Maybe they are worth putting up on ebay?

wow, what a bunch of good stuff.....and you should be excited. Hug that DH for all of us here for being so good to you. Now that metal thing looks almost like a trash can that goes inside the city cement or wire holders and they pull it out and dump it....but it looks more like a giant mushroom (guess who has been doing and looking at those lately, lol).

Well you certainly ought to be excited. What a great day you had. Wonderful stuff, hard to pick favorite but I love the wood carved turtle. And envy your finding the head and footboard. And the iron chair. Oh heck, everything!

Thanks everyone!

When we were packing the table and benches the owners of the house came home and after they parked they started walking toward us. Good thing it was a long driveway cuz by the time they were by the curb we were ready to take off. Which DH did pretty quickly. HA! I love curb shopping but get kinda embarrassed when the owners catch me at it. Do others feel the same way or have you gotten over it already?

It makes me nervous too when the curtains get pulled back and the owners peek out, or worse yet, if they are outside!! But I have learned to do the driving and get my son to do the picking for me!! I tell him "Oh - get that!!".

I love your bed, it will make a dandy bench! Also the rocking chair is awesome - my favorites of your finds!

What a haul, you hit the mother load on all of this stuff. That wicker chair is awesome and so lovely with the plant on it. You and DH really had a great weekend, I can tell.

I love it when I toss something out and someone comes by and rescues it.I am sure the owners who peek out are happy also,at least in my Happy Place they are .
