More Plastic Spoon Flowers--they're evolving!

So, after I got the technique down, i kept making more and more spoon flowers...to the point that I just finished a batch of almost 20 that I will be selling (took me a week and a few burned fingers!).

Bought a new car this past Monday (a VW Beetle) and the first thing my hubby did was take one of my flowers that matched the color of my car and put it in the bud vase:

My new favorite way to display is in a small terra cotta pot (I buy the pots at the Dollar store 3 for a buck) and some moss:

Nice flowers!
I saw on another forum that they were using a heat gun instead of a candle. Said it worked for them......

Congrats on the new car. I love the flowers.I'm planning on trying my hand at them soon.I think a heat gun would work,but I'll have to use a candle for now.

wow the coneflower rage is still on! I have to tell you I'm loving the blanket flowers & think I need to do a little hunting. I know I got some seeds in trades last year. Margo, sounds like you got some really sweet deals! I'm neck & neck with mamasllamas! I'm not really competitive. I just wanted an excuse to say mamasllamas. tee hee. Love that name! :) Shirley, I was in Milford PA / Lake Wallenpaupack area. Nice because it is always a few degrees cooler there, higher elevation, more dense forest & waterfalls than NYC. There's also a raptor rescue center that always has some amazing events. There was one including a golden eagle, peregrin falcon & snowy owl, with a surprise cameo from a wild bald eagle that happened to be around. Crazy. Also the most amazing sugar baby watermelons & local raspberries. Yum. I love summer fruit. Suzanne, I had a black goldfish that used to play with me. I would stick my hand in the water & she would swim into my open hand until I lightly pulled on her tail & she would swim away & then swim back into my hand for more! It started with an especially hot summer where I kept sticking my hand in the water to check the temp in there. She also loved it when I added "air conditioning" (aka ice cubes). I know it's not supposed to be good for their scales, but she *loved* it & would swim around in the cold meltoff. Holly, Suzanne, send some of that rain my way, because my garden is suffering. Unless Margo wants to pawn her hubby off to me in this trade to water my plants (will he fit in a large flat rate? I'm assuming he's considered a perenial) :0 stay cool, folks. grace

I have been making this ice tea for 14 years now. My family, husband, and friends LOVE IT. I have friends that will drive by my house just to come in for ice tea. It is just good. The funny thing is it is simple and easy. I got the recipe while visiting my aunt in Boston. We couldn't stop drinking it. Ok, here is the recipe: Get a medium size sauce pan and fill it will water. Boil the water, then remove it from the heat. Get 6 Lipton tea bags and tie the strings together as to put them in the hot water. Keep the tea bags in the water for 8 minutes. Then take the bags out and throw them away. Important: Do not sqeeze the tea bags after taking them out of the water. Then at 1/3 cup of sugar to the warm tea mixture in pan and mix until the suger dissolves. Fill a good size tea pitcher half way with water, then pour the tea mixture in. You can add more water to fill the pitcher if needed. Put it in the fridge or try it over ice. Oh so good! Enjoy!

Setting the table is the best part of entertaining for me. I love using my beautiful things, and I love washing them and putting them away again, and washing and ironing the linens. (Yes, I hate ironing shirts as much as the next person, but ironing linens keeps me in touch with where they came from- my mother, my grandmother, my MIL, wedding gifts, and even tag sale linens!) I love using my sterling, which my mother picked out for me when I was a baby, and my grandmother's Haviland and cut glass. I love fresh flowers and candles on the table. In fact, I love using the dining room, and if it's more than the 2 of us, I do. We moved last year and the dining room in the new house is easier to use than in our previous house, and I'm happy it gets so much use. I don't always use my good china for everyday dinners in the DR, but I always use my sterling. When my boys were small, I taught them the correct way to set a table, and we always used placemats and cloth napkins, even in the breakfast room. My daughter-in-law is beyond casual - no placemats or tablecloth, sometimes you have to ask for a napkin, bread in a plastic wrapper, etc. My GD, her daughter, is only 2, but she refers to my china and crystal as "Su-su's pretties". I tell her, "Play your cards right and this can all be yours." I gave her an infant feeding spoon in my pattern when she was born as well as a sterling baby cup and a small spoon and fork in my pattern. I am pleased to see that my DIL lets her use them often. I am going to give my DIL (among other things) some pretty washable placemats and cloth napkins (no-iron). Small steps.

Adding to this older thread - make sure the knife will sit across the edge of the plate. I was given some steak knives years ago that were modern with a gentle curve. They would always fall off the plate, so I got rid of them. Much of the newer stainless is not marked 18/8 or 18/10, so be aware that it might stain over time. I would not buy any of those. I have my original Paul Revere used 25 yrs, then put away for 20 yrs. in favor of Oneida Michelangelo, one of the Heirloom patterns. I have a complete service for 12 including shrimp forks, butter spreaders, iced tea spoons, etc. in Michelangelo. Last year I bought a new Reed & Barton set from Costco (18/10) because I wanted the larger pieces which I thought looked more current. I've used them a couple of times with company, but they are big and heavy. I'm thinking of putting away the Michelangelo and going back to the Paul Revere for a change.

What is really popular with the young girls is wearing flowers in their hair.I wonder if you can attach hair clips or bobby pins so they can slip on their hair.

I am wearing bandanas to hide the baldness and I could add one of your flowers to give it a little whimsy.

They are so pretty! DH had a great idea putting one in the bud vase in your Beetle (I have always wanted one myself!). No need to water it! Why do I get the feeling that my spoon flowers would look more like a glob? he-he Keep sharing!

It was me nona that found the heat gun does a good job on them they are so much fun but you really have to concentrate on them

I'm loving your flowers ! In fact - I just brought a whole plastic bag full of spoons down from the attic to "play" .
I'll admit - I don't ever remember seeing colored spoons . Where do you get them ? All I've ever seen is clear & white.
I'll practice on the white and buy some colored ones for the "good ones" .

nona--I havent tried a heat gun as i don't have one right now--trying to keep my cost down but thats an excellent idea! it would help prevent the occasional "whoops" scorch caused by the candles

roxanne--Im actually thinking i will have to drop the price, as what i feel they are worth is not what people are going to be willing to pay for plastic flowers. My plan was $7 for the flowers with stems and $10 for the potted ones. That being said, I'll probably be dropping them to $5 and $7..we'll see. The problem is that, while i have less than a dollar into each flower, they take a LOT of time to make so I dont know if I'm going to get my time well enough paid for to make it worth selling them :(

nanagrandma--what a great idea for hair clips! that's why i love this group--so creative!!

toomuchglass--I get the colored spoons at a local party supply store--they have every color of the rainbow. i buy a bag of 24 (which makes 2 flowers) for $1.79

Wow! Your spoon flowers came out beautifully. I might have to try this idea this summer when I have more time. Looks like fun. I would pay $10 for a flower pot but then again, I am into junk art. LOL!

Not sure, but I think the Dollar Store has different colored spoons sold by color. Dollar a box.
