Patio Garden Junk Flower Containers

Well, hopefully, we had our "last frost" a couple nights ago...lots of warm days in April...so I planted some flowers!

Here's my patio "grate/treadle sewing machine table" that I've posted before & got at a GS for a good price a couple yrs. ago (owner used it as a tv stand)! The yellow pot is GS & both teakettles at TS's...I use them to water potted plants...the yellow enamelware cooking pot I bought recently at antique store:

Here's some more GJ on my patio for container planting...old copper kettle that I've had for yrs from an auction...I sit flower pots upside down in the bottom, then sit a couple potted containers on top of them, add a little Spanish moss around them. Looks pretty sparse right now but by next mo the flowers nearby will be as tall as copper kettle...that's an old pc of machinery painted purple by the copper bucket:

How do you keep the sewing machine stand from rusting? I have one I want to put on my patio but I'm not sure what to treat it with to keep it from rusting all over everything.

Wow...How pretty and creative!I love the "pop" of the bright yellow with the greens around it and the purple machinery adds nice character.
You sure have been busy playing in the dirt. :)
Now I just have to talk you into posting a pic or two of your pond (you may have posted it before but I don't get over to this side very much). *hint*.

I appreciate all the nice comments, Thank You!!.... OUTofSPITE....you questioned the pots....there are six pots....a 6" thru 14" plus a catch tray with holes drilled in it...stacked tray and 14" pot...then put a steel rebar rod thru middle hole and into the ground...filled with potting soil....another pot threaded onto rod..fill with soil...and again till finish with pots.... wind did not move one bit.....I used Wal-Marts plastic pots...I did find I had to rotate pots by turning bottom tray, to keep flowers growing even.....they were too shaded next to fence I guess.

Well now, I thought I had a photo of mine all bloomed out. BUT, this is of mine last spring after it had leafed out. When I got it it had blooms on it so I knew it would bloom. I got this bamboo ladder, anchored it in the ground and used sisal to tie it at the top to the lattice metal patio cover. Made sure that the ladder didn't have much giveway since (at the time) heard that wisteria can take down a patio! I weaved what I had of vines in and out the ladder. I kept pruning off lower leaves to encourage taller growth. Now, each year I cut off branches at the top so when it leafs out they will so at the top and a beefier trunk. I left it for a couple years once and thought I wouldn't be able to trim those vines from the patio cover! I do this becaue I don;t want the growth to pop off the screws that hold my patio cover together. Since we have a sprinkler head right at the base sometimes I have to trim off suckers I see in the grass. There's been some but not too many. You just really have to be diligent. My first piece of garden junk (or at least garden ornament) was a small cement statue of a collie that was painted in black, tan and white to look just like my own dog. I placed him beside the front steps, then decided he needed a companion and bought a cement cat for the other side of the porch. After that came a cement unicorn for the back garden. These three critters still adorn the gardens although we sold the house 10 yrs ago. The woman who lives there liked them and kept them. Because I had cemented them to underground anchors to avoid theft, I told her that if she decided to remove them it would require a sledgehammer. She replied that she liked them and had no intention of removing them. My cement pets first suggested to me that non-flower objects could bring new interest and life to a garden.

Hello... I am long overdue to start creating a garden workspace and organizing all my garden junk. I thought I would resurrect this old post and see if anyone had any more to add to it. I could start a new thread if that is a better idea? So....I have too much junk scattered all over the place..the basement, the garage, seeds in my bedroom...lol. I am sure you get the picture and perhaps there is someone else out there who has the same problem. I just don't know where to start, it is a little overwhelming. What gives me the most trouble? Large containers 22" and where to put them for the winter. Large bags of potting soil or soil amendments....storing and having easy access to them. POTS! Having tools handy when out in the garden without making 10 trips to the garage for something I forgot, yet not dragging everything around with me. Leftover materials from past projects...a pile of broken pavers, a small pile each of stonedust and pea gravel. The COMPOST BINS! I need to get them out of sight. We have a small yard. I was hoping to create an area where I had everything garden related so it is not in a number of different places. My problem is the only area available is on the side of my garage but the main entrance to the backyard from the front is there and you would have to pass through my 'workarea' to get to it. I really love a pretty organized, neat area anyway....I am just not coming up with creative ideas for what I have to work with to make it that way. If someone has had similar issues that they have resolved successfully, I would love to hear about how you did it. OOOOH! That yellow is like a big bright canary! So pretty! Using teapots as watering cans is doubly nice...looks good and has a use! I like the metal containers in the 2nd pic also. The pansies look really cute in the pot! You've done a great job collecting!

Jeanne, so bright and pretty! Yellow is a happy color. :)
Do your potted plants do well all summer? I usually put annuals in all sorts of containers out front, but they often wither or get skimpy after a few weeks. I do keep them watered.

dlshlep...this treadle machine base was already painted when I got it...my DH & I use "grates" and make smaller tables with a wood base. We use Rusteoleum spray paint on the grates...so I'm assuming that would work great on your treadle, too...if you don't mind painting it.

blooming...my potted plants usually do fairly well...this group on the patio gets some shade part of the day...& I think that helps alot...and, like you said, have to keep watering.

Thanks so much for sharing pics. You're pond is BEAUTIFUL! and I looove the little fisherboy as well, such a perfect placement for him. The little bridge is just wonderful.

Glad it got warm enough to get some plants in containers!! They look great & yellow is a great garden color. I have that reddish plant in 2nd pic & it can really get long & big!! That boiler will be full before you know it! I got a couple plants in today but it got so cold I came in. Don't laugh, it snowed 30 miles from me today!! Now it is really windy so will spend all day tomorrow picking up the junk that is lying around. Well, before that we did have some nice days! Soon we will all be too hot!! Jan

Jeanne, your garden whether it is on a cool treadle table or around a pond looks awesome. You have such a great eye for "junk." I love the yellow pieces ... who needs flowers with those around? You'll have to share a pic of your copper pot with the plants fully grown. Thanks for sharing some pretty sunshine!

Jeanne, you know I've long been in love with your beautiful yard and gardens and creations. Living here in the Phoenix desert for for almost 50 yrs, I can't even imagine what it would be like to see such beauty in person. Wish I lived close enough to visit you, but you'd probably have to toss me out as I'd never want to leave. LOL.

I love your treadle planter. The fern is a perfect victorian touch. What a great pond! I would like a small a pond. How difficult is the upkeep?

Your planters are looking good Jeanne! Love the big kettle type container and the purple machinery piece...reminds me of the grates my DH brought home last year! I know your flowers will look great..they always do! Are you planting your stacking buckets this year? I'm going to, but going to use some different type plants I think...much more shade than I anticipated last year and they are WAY too heavy to ask DH to move them!

I have the same grate but was wanting to use some wooden legs for it. Your table has changed my thinking. I believe the old sewing treadles would be stronger support. I love your photo's.
