Calling all lettuce experts

I am not new to gardening but growing lettuce is a relatively new experience for me. I have some Jericho Romaine lettuce growing now and we love it. Unfortunately I did not plant enough for us because I was not sure we would like it. I am in zone 7+ (Central Virginia) and we usually have pretty mild winters Âbut- we do get temps down in the 20Âs and 30Âs but usually only for a few hours at night Â not all day. If I plant some romaine in jiffy cubes and set them out in mid/late November Â will it grow or will it just sit there. I can grow cabbage which stays outside all winter with no problem and also kale and collards. Anyone have luck growing romaine lettuce over winter??

If you grow them in a cold frame and use one of the many cultivars developed in Europe for growing through the very short days of their winter, then they will keep growing all winter. Lettuce in one of those plants that can tolerate a lot lower temperatures under cover than when growing out in the open. Winter lettuce cultivars will often have "winter", "d'hiver" or "inverno" as part of their names, as in "Winter Density", "Rouge d'Hiver" or "Verde d'Inverno". Territorial sells a good selection of cultivars.

Dancinglemons, my climate is obviously more severe than yours, but I have no trouble overwintering small plants of Romaine and some leaf type lettuces, which then make nice plants in the spring. Here of course, they don't grow at all from late October until April brings some warmth, they just sit exactly as they were.

I don't know if it would grow for you or not -- that might vary from year to year based on the weather, but it would survive and grow again in the spring, which I assume probably comes at least a month earlier for you than for me (for a benchmark, crocus usually blooms here in early April, daffodils in late April, and lilacs a nd apple blossoms in mid-May, although it can vary by about two weeks either way based upon weather conditions).

Is it possible to pick a white for cabinets and trim without knowing your wall color yet?! My countertops are Caesarstone Nougat and my appliances are white! Yes. The countertops and appliances are major components in the overall "envelope" of the space you're creating. Use those as the benchmarks for choosing a color of white for the cabinets and trim throughout the whole house. To make it easier, just use the same color on the cabinets and trim. I'd use the countertops for the #1 component to determine which color of white is the right one. Appliances second most important. Becuase odds are the appliances will be replaced way before the countertops. The cabinet color/countertop color relationship is more important and more permanent. If you have a well-color-coordinated envelope of major/permanent elements, it will be a harmonious foundation to build on and it will also inform your furniture and decor choices going forward.

I understand your inspiration, what inlay are you actually wanting to use? The inlay in this picture looks like it is inset into the wood flooring . Almost like they routed (sp?) the item into the board after the boards were installed. If the inlay is set to go around the edges of the floor where walking is less likely to occur, I wonder if you can select a different style of inlay. Something that is not flat but is rounded maybe? that way the inlay can sit slightly above the wood and minimize some of the gaping. It is hard to make a judgment on this as we do not really know all the details. I am wondering if Schluter has a product that could offer a solution. Attached the Schluter catalog link below. Might be worth checking out. I do think that for what you want you are going to have to make some concessions. Do you want to pay the labor for someone to perfect the cut edges of the wood? Can you tolerate the imperfections for this look? The final solution is the one you'll be able to live with and be within budget. Either way that is a beautiful floor! You could many different things with an opening that size such as putting in operating windows or doors, put a wall in below with shorter windows, ect. Depends on what you want and how it would tie in with exterior. You could call a commercial glazer and see if they can do just the glass if that is all you want. I would want a triple paned, appropriate low-E glass pack with a warm edge spacer . Keep in mind your glass will look different than your other windows if they don’t have Low-e. Being as your climate can get pretty cold , and. You’re already at 32 degrees I don’t think I would go with an aluminum framed window and you’re building code might not even allow it. Aluminum is much more prone to condensation than other typical frame materials.

its called mechanical damage ... is it always outside... any windstorms in the last month ... cats.. dogs.. children .. you when you move it around.. shipping from grower to seller to you ... bottom line.. its nbd ... if its putting out new leaves.. take off the ugliest ... and if its mechanical ... then you sprayed form nothing.. its is preferred you actually find something to treat.. before you start applying any kind of goos... water when a plant needs water ... insert finger and find out ... whether or not every 5 days is reasonable.. is left to you to figure out .. its not really about what the media surface looks like ... humidity is rarely an issue ... but this doesnt look like that ... id think it would be more brown all over. .and rather crispy ... and just for the heck of it ... how about a pic of the whole ... did you just show us a few damaged leaves.. and the rest looks good??? ken ps: wait a minute.. down under ... you are just leaving summer... right... was it outside all summer long.. how bad was summer ... how windy ... etc ... but do keep in mind.. all plants shed a few of the oldest leaves.. and this often happens in winter ... the whole plant pic might help ....

Yes! The name "Cool CroP" is self explanatoy; They grow in "cool" weather better than "HOT" weather.
I would consider a range of 42F(n) to 76F(D) ideal for "cool crops". So then "cool" is not equivalent to "Cold". cool crops can survive in "cold" weather but they will not grow measureably. Probably there are few exceptions that may manage to grow just a bit, but not a whole lot. On the other hand, if your winter turns out to be unusually warm, (in zones 6,7,8) your COOL crops may do better than expected. Things can happen. Last year I tapped maple trees(here in ATLANTA GA Area) and made about one quart of maple syrup. You would think that maple syrups can only be made up North/Northeast USA and Canada. So you never know; your cabbages may grow in Wisconsine, this winter.

Thanks everyone! I will look at my Territorial catalog and see what I can learn. I also have Johnny's catalog which is quite intense in the information department. I will also plant some of the Romaine that I have and put it "under cover" as they say across the pond. If I have some moderate success I will post pictures.
