Hello, new here!

Hi everyone. I'm new here, usually hang out on the kitchen forum as we are putting the finishing touches on a complete kitchen remodel. My sister e-mailed me some pictures of an old bike she painted white and hung flower baskets all over (inspired by all of you) and sent me a link to some garden mushrooms someone made on this forum. Well I have to say I've been lurking here almost non stop for the past few days and I'm totally addicted! I went to a thrift store yesterday and bought a bunch of old silverware to make a windchime, I'm working on a birdhouse mosaic using pebbles and tile left over from my new backsplash, I'm working on some tipsy pots to put out in my yard, I bought stuff to make a mushroom or 3, I'm spray painting parts of my old enamel watering can in preparation for doing a mosaic on the other parts, and I finished up a gourd birdhouse with the exception of sealing it just this afternoon. Not to mention the pole bean teepee I constructed today and placed out in my veggie garden (but that idea came from somewhere else, sorry). As if I weren't busy enough with my 3 kids, huge dog, 2 cats, and DH! But I just wanted to pop in, introduce myself, and thank you all for your inspiring ideas and, from reading all your posts, what seems like a wealth of warmth and kindness.

Hey Robin, Welcome to our Junk Gang. You sound pretty darn 'inspired' and on a roll. I could use some of your energy. Sure hope you will share photos, we LOVE photos.
We crave photos. We need photos. LOL.

A nice big WELCOME to the forum Robin. This place certainly is addicting isn't it. You'll chat with some wonderful folks here and as you've already found out, see some fantastic garden junk projects. As Purplemoon wrote, yes we love the pics around here. It's like our own little magazine! If you haven't figured out how to post pics yet, on the first page of the forum when it opens up, in the "Search" (white box), I did a post a while back on how to do it. My first suggestion would be to find a plant-sitter lol :) However, since that isn't fesable, how are you traveling? If it's by car, you could possibly start some seedlings about 4 weeks or so before you go, and take them with you, that way they would be ready to plant by the time you got back. (for veggies, you would have to make sure that they would have enough time to ripen before your first frost.) You can also sometimes find plants already growing (vegitables and flowers) at nursurys and places like Home Depot and Lowes. In fact, the Lowes near me already has plants lioke broccoli and cauliflower ready to be planted. You could ask around and find out what they plan to have avalable in mid june. They will be more expensive that way of course, but if the alternative is having nothing, I personally would go ahead and pay the extra lol. Barring that, I really don't know. (I'm fairly new at this too!) You might ask in the vegitable forum about fast-growing veggies.

jstropic: I have been attempting to set seed from some of my Hippi's for a couple years, but haven't successfully had seed yet (they aborted). I've been more hopeful this year as the ones I've had longer are doing much better than their original Walmart state. soultan: Thank you! I think you're right on the ID -- the flowers were strongly red in person and only went a little more orange over age (but still quite red overall). The pictures I can find of Amigo seem to fit it very well. Not a good day today -- I came back from Kansas City to find my blooming beauty tipped over and fell *right into* the waste basket below. These lovely flowers sure can bend fast over a few days for the light -- I should have warned my BF before I left. Such a sweetie, he worried over my babies while I was gone (he was afraid they were getting too much or too little light, that they might need watering, and if the temperature was OK for them). All the flowers broke off and the scape was broken 2/3 the way up where it hit when it fell. Well... another year I guess before breeding this one. Hopefully the fall didn't damage the roots as well. :/ I guess he'll have to live with me ordering those Royal Color bulbs I've been drooling over, on the bright side ;)

Welcome! In the 1st pic, the larger one in front is an Echeveria. Will have to wait till it grows out a bit-see if color changes with season-maybe figure out the species. In the 2nd pic, the one with a broken top looks like an xGrapto-something (intergeneric, Graptopetalum w/something else). The one behind it is a Sedum...perhaps S. adolphii or ax xGraptosedum. 3rd pic, the 2 look like either types of xPachyveria or xGraptoveria. 4th you said you don't need ID'd, but I'll agree with Karen, the larger one is Echeveria elegans. The smaller looks like E. lilacina to me. Do you have an ID on it?

Thanks for the warm welcome Karen and Sal, I'll check out the Robolady site for sure. And yes, I know how to post pics having posted many over on the kitchen side. I'm also a whiz at Photoshop so I love to do funky things with pictures, too. I'll post some WIP pics of my birdhouses and maybe a few others later.

Quick question, would doing a mosaic on a concrete bird bath make it easier to clean? I love watching the birds play in the water so I don't want to turn it into a planter or anything, but what a pain to keep that thing from looking like pond scum! I'm wondering if smooth porcelain tiles or glass marbles or something would make it a lot easier to wipe out. Or would the grout be just as problematic as the concrete? Any particular type of grout work best for something like that?

Welcome to the junk yard Robin!!! I am soo glad you know how to post pictures cause as you can tell we are all visual around here!!! I had a little trouble with keeping my first birdbath clean after mosaicing but I think it was the sealer I used. I will wait to see what everyone else says. Can't wait to see all your projects.
