cindeea: Glad to meet you as well! There's nothing like being around others who understand the addiction :) My poor roommates probably think my masters project is to design an indoor jungle of Hippeastrum!

jodik: I'm not sure of what the variety is -- it came mislabeled as an Apple Blossom. Though you can't see it from the picture above, it has a smallish yellow-creme star inside the throat. As the flowers age the yellow portions aren't so distinct, but when it first opened it was a nice contrast. I'd almost say it was a Red Lion except the yellow portions.

The yellow color doesn't show up well in this photo, but it's the best I have on my laptop. I should be able to get a more color-correct photo when I get back on Sunday.

The yellow, light mid stripe just in the throat is a characteristic of Amigo. Though amigo is not orange, but rather red.

Welcome and great photos! How far along in your breeding program are you?

I know what you mean. I just stopped in to better understand how to cultivate my lone Apple Blossom and somehow acquired (a lot) more and I am still here, which means...oh no!! - :)

It's so much fun corrupting others with talk and photos of all these fantastic flowers! I'm glad I'm not the only one to be easily swayed into massive purchasing! But, as I keep saying, there are much worse things to be addicted to, so a houseful of potted bulbs that bloom every year isn't so bad!

Liltika, I couldn't even guess as to the variety of your flower... Red Lion would have no yellow... it's certainly not the Apple Blossom you purchased it as... so those two can be ruled out... I'm not very good at IDing varieties, but what ever it is, it sure is nicely shaped and pretty in color!

It's very pretty Liltika. Looks like a picture I have of Orange Souvereign from when I purchased it, but it's so hard to tell with photos because so much affects them -- cameras take to the color differently, how much natural light, the flash, and on and on. But enjoy it because you have a real beauty.

jstropic: I have been attempting to set seed from some of my Hippi's for a couple years, but haven't successfully had seed yet (they aborted). I've been more hopeful this year as the ones I've had longer are doing much better than their original Walmart state.

soultan: Thank you! I think you're right on the ID -- the flowers were strongly red in person and only went a little more orange over age (but still quite red overall). The pictures I can find of Amigo seem to fit it very well.

Not a good day today -- I came back from Kansas City to find my blooming beauty tipped over and fell *right into* the waste basket below. These lovely flowers sure can bend fast over a few days for the light -- I should have warned my BF before I left. Such a sweetie, he worried over my babies while I was gone (he was afraid they were getting too much or too little light, that they might need watering, and if the temperature was OK for them).

All the flowers broke off and the scape was broken 2/3 the way up where it hit when it fell. Well... another year I guess before breeding this one. Hopefully the fall didn't damage the roots as well. :/

I guess he'll have to live with me ordering those Royal Color bulbs I've been drooling over, on the bright side ;)

hopflower: Oh yes, I'm glad it was mislabeled :) Surprises are always nice! And it was a great reason to head back and get a second Apple Blossom bulb as well. I'm not sure I'll get a bloom off the second 'Apple Blossom' bulb this year though, it turned it rather sick looking from being packaged so long. Unfortunately it was the last they had, so I'm still seeing if I can nurse it back to health. I always feel sorry for those poor bulbs that end up like that :/
