From rocking horse to cool zebra...

I was checking out the picture gallery at Delphi Glass and came across the mosaic zebra at the link below. It was made from one of those bouncy horses that the artist found while curb shopping. She did an amazing job on it! Be sure to look at the close-ups of the zebra's forehead and saddle.

I am so envious of your spectacular finds, adina! And such bargains! I paid 3 times the price of your magnificent carousel horse for my small aluminum playground pony. I think your carousel horse would look lovely painted like a horse on a real merry-go-round. I'd paint all the little gee-gaws on its bridle and saddle bright colors. I think it would really set off the cream color you plan for the body and bring the creature to life. I hope you post more pictures when this steed is installed in your garden. I love your other metal art creatures too!

Thanks for all the great comments! Im going to try to answer all questions! Aquawise, I hand sanded the whole thing and then spray painted it with rustoleum. For the saddle and harness colors I also used rustoleum, not the spray kind tho! Then I sprayed the whole thing (about 3 coats) with a outdoor sealer/ poly. For the plugs, I pulled out the wood foot rests and cut them about 3 inches long and reinserted them with some jb weld on them. they were tight to begin with but I thought that would help too. Careful not to push them all the way through!! Sandplum, I actually used a wood bit and just went really slow. Drilled a pilot hole first. Jeanne, I have not started on the other one yet as I went back to work for the winter (until April). (just retired in Aug).. They made me a offer I couldnt refuse!!!! My brother is on the lookout for a geared down motor we can use for the solar carousel. I do have the new horse off the stand and ready to be sprayed. Thanks again.. Many garden centers sell inexpensive pH test kits. They're fun, and simplify all that pH stuff. Your manure and organic matter (and the life forms they support) will nudge it toward neutral over time, and it can be interesting to watch. Fall is the best time for serious liming. Permanent pathways provide habitat for earthworms, ground beetles, etc, and give you some access regardless of the weather. For temporary access to some areas, you also can lay boards on the ground and stand on the boards. If you planned to use your wheat as a cover crop, you'll need to take it down 2-3 weeks before you need the space, or you can pull it up and let it dry into mulch, or compost it. In mild winter climates, actively growing wheat does not go down without a little bit of a fight. Back to the permanent pathways. You can sow them with legumes and well-behaved grasses, and mow them to make mulch for the beds or rows next to them. It's a cool system. Picture it -- next year, a ribbon of crimson clover laced with blue bachelor buttons leads you to your beautiful [fill in blank] and you feel so happy! Here is a link that might be useful: my website

The mentioned Burlingtons is one source. Others would be Edmund's, Pickering, Palatine or Regan's but there are a lot more and I'm not sure who is still taking orders for this year. Although I just ordered from Burlington and Rogue Valley so I know they still are. With Burlington you have to go to HMF to see their plant list and then email them your order. I love all things equine, and that zebra is a work of incredible magnificence! I cannot even imagine the hours of work involved to create a such a beautiful artwork. (I hope she used really durable, weatherproof glue for all those sparkly bits and pieces!)

That is sooooo cool! I have a horse in my shed just waiting to be turned into something wonderful. I doubt it will be that fancy.

I envy that talent ! I'm a horse lover ,too .... I have all kinds of mosaic horses and horse panels - but nothing like that ...amazing .

I was cruising down a back road today, and what did I see sitting out by the road? You Betcha! One grubby old bouncy horse with a free sign next to it! It's now residing in my trunk...

I have been wanting to find one of them bouncy horses as well. I thought of just keeping it as is..but this is a much nicer idea for it! I always loved the Merry Go Round horse that was always the most prettiest painted up with pink and light blues and florals!
