Hi Randi: This isn't going to be much help but I have a large clivia that I've had for years now and it has about 4 pups growing in the same pot. I got mine at a nursery that specialized in houseplants but have never seen them in Home Depot or Lowes around here. I've never heard of or seen any miniatures. Sorry I can't be of more help but maybe there's a nursery in your area that could tell you where they might be available. I can't send plants across the border so can't even offer you a pup.

I bought one of mine at the Lowes near here and they have them on a fairly regular basis. I don't know of any smaller ones but they do like crowded roots so could probably do well in a farily small pot but it would still be a fairly large plant. logan

Hi, Randi. Check out Lowe's around Christmastime. They get them in for about $20.00, 6 to 8" pot's, in bloom. After Christmas, they should be marked about 1/2 price.

I got mine at a local farmer's market. The nicer garden stores sell them occasionally.

I bought one at the Lowes down in Champaign. As AdaOrand said, it is a 6 or 8" pot and was around $20. Looked great and was pretty healthy. I put it outside this summer, and acclimated it slowly, but overestimated how much sun it could handle so it burned. That is a bit of a problem with a plant that is so slow-growing with long-lived leaves.

There are dwarf forms from Japan and China. Check eBay. Funny that you haven't seen them in California as I was in the SF area last year and they use Clivia as an outdoor perennial. It was all over.

Regular clivias are easy to find in California. Just visit a real nursery rather than Lowes or Home Depot. Those places sell a very limited variety of plants--often good things and new varieties of popular plants but still very limited. As Jonathan mentioned, Clivia is coomonly used in landscaping and can be found in large quantities in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. I didn't know there were dwarf forms, but I have heard that many varieties of clivias are now becoming available from specialists. There is one located in the Los Angeles Area, John Ingram. I don't know his contact information though.

I have been growing an old variety called 'Belgian Hybrids', which have wider leaves than standard clivias. They also have larger, more open flowers, but only in the standard orange color. I find their wide leaves and large flowers more attractive than the common clivias. These plants grow large, making great outdoor container and garden plants for sub-tropical California. I notice I am using the plural for this variety, but as far as I know, there is only one variety, but it comes true from seed. All of my plants are seedlings which either I inherited or raised myself.

Thanks guys for all the great info! I'll have to look closer at Lowe's and HD. Also, I've been looking at the houseplants. Now I realize they would probably be outside. And I'll definitely check just after Christmas for half price plants! These guys sure can get expensive!

Are you interested in clivia seedlings? I have several about 4" tall, didn't see a trade list but do you have plants to trade? These are the standard orange variety, will get to be large but right now are small.

I just started some Clivia from seed recently. A plant friend of mine used to specialize in them & recently scaled back his collection; he gave me a Clivia fruit from which I collected seed, potted up (2 seeds) in August sometime & now have a cute little seedling, just setting its 2nd leaf. I'm excited, it's the first plant I've grown from seed in about 30 yrs!!

Clivias are in most nurseries in CA starting about mid Feb. and into April. This coincides with their blooming season. There aren't any commerically available dwarf clivias in nurseries in the US. You can find some that have 12-15" leaves, but most will be closer to 24"+ leaves. To use a 4" pot, you either need a seedling or small offset. If you prefer a flowering sized Clivia in this small pot, you need to contact some of the Chinese growers. You will have to import it from China. Ebay is also another source. The best Chinese seller is Lily Wang. She lists most of the Chinese Clivias on ebay. She already has a contact to receive and reship the plants domestically in the USA. I don't recommend buying anything internationally smaller than 6 leaves (maybe 4 leaves), as the survival rate decreases in proportion to plant size with the longer shipping and inspection times required. Good luck on your quest.

If you have stuff to trade check out the Plant Exchange forum. I have a clivia coming to me from a trade. I've seen them on various member's trade page. Work on your trade page and get out there and do some trading. It's cheaper than going out and buying in many cases.

if you have an OSH -- Orchard Supply/Hardware in your area, they'll have them. I've purchased a 1-gal YELLOW there for under $40 -- and that's a steal! Also try Lowe's, Home Depot. They usually with the Lilies of the Nile.

I envy you folks on the left coast! Another Gwebber found a yellow clivia at a box store. I've only ever seen the orange ones here on the East coast. Hoping those yellows will make their way over here...

Gh, you're lucky finding any..(S) Here in the midwest, I see none at big box stores..there's one nursery that sells the oragne, but they want 99.00 and up depending on pot size..Toni

I found mine in a local nursery, actually. I paid $30ish for one that was in an 8inch pot(good size) and had 3-4 pups! Anyway, I can't say that I've ever seen one in HD. Yellow is on list and I will probably end up purchasing one from Logees before it's all over with!

BY the way, I'm still marveling at the ones I grew from seeds this year. They are so cute with their one leaved selves! LOL
