found tin ceiling tile. What to do with it...

I got an 18" square tin ceiling tile at a garage sale. It's white and has a raised flower design on it. My camera isn't letting me upload pictures at the moment. Has anyone got good ideas for me as to what I can do with this? I don't mind painting it etc.

My niece is buying them from EBay and putting
them on her walls in groups of 3 for decorations.
She is cleaning them all up first.

Just finished up tin ceiling tiles for the same reasons as yours! I don't have pics yet, but it came out excellent. You do not have to worry about rust as everything is powercoated. They told me if we really want to, we can caulk, but it is really not necessary. We do need to caulk the corners in the crown moulding. See www.americantinceilings.com. They were very helpful. We did pattern #20 in bright white satin in a 37 sq. ft. bathroom. We've got a retro/beach thing going.

What do I do with two ceiling-tiled ceilings?

I had two issues in my house and I have done the following... I did foam board in a hallway because it is going to be torn out in a year or two. I put a thin coat of joint compound on it and painted. I nailed the foam board up like you would dry wall. Found the foamboard at the dollar store. I mixed a gallon of dark brown paint to joint compound and got a brush from the dollar store and burshed it on in a swril design like the walls. My walls were a light tan and mixing the dark paint in the white JC made it a light tan ceiling. Both of these fixes were done last March so it has been a year and a half and everything still looks good. The ceiling in the kitchen I do not understand what your question about "cleaning". I used ceiling paint then painted the color I wanted. They sell paint now that has both the undercoat and paint in one. So you do not have to do two steps. I have not tried it so I cannot say for sure it will work if there is a lot of oil and dirt.

rdsso I have the same armstrong tiles in my kitchen! It was difficult to put up (arms overhead a lot). We found that the edges were very delicate and anyplace there is a ding it is very noticeable. The ceilling tiles also were difficult to keep level so the ceiling looks a little wavy as if we are hiding a bad ceiling. If I had to do it over again I would opt for the larger plastic panels.

I think it would look great. I think you should be careful to choose a pattern with low relief for relatively easy cleaning. They sell cheapo faux pressed tin panels (made of plastic) at Home Depot. You could put them up and see how you like them...

I got three pieces from a freecycler a couple of years ago.

They are 2ft x 5ft sections. I was going to make...(shoot..it's on the tip of my tongue......OH OH I remember

it's Valances.. I was going to make Valances for my living room windows. And I planned on painting them chipped white.

But then my DH finally got the trim put up around the windows...We spent a fortune doing that..and I just couldn't cover them. At least not for a few years...lol
It was about two hundred a window plus since my husband had his stroke he just can't do that finish work anymore so he paid someone to install them.(to us that is a fortune)

Another thing I've seen people do with them are backsplashes.

BUT since you bought just one...I guess my ideas aren't helping you much...

Oh well...8^)

May I suggest you take a look at Margo's website, she is "Robolady" in the forum and has several posts you can check out. Her site is:

Margo has made some beautiful creations with whatever she finds. There are some ideas for ceiling tiles.

If you decide you just don't like it you could send it to me!! LOL!! Just kiding. I've seen them made into wall pockets by taking two of the corners and bending them up to the center. It makes a point on the bottom. Does that make scense? Also seen one with small bottles attached as vases to put cut flowers in.

I've found that they look good just hung on the wall or even inset into furniture etc. Check out the site, it's about 1/2 way down.

Glad you enjoyed it. I just got around to reading the other replies on this thread and realized that it had already been posted. Let me know what you end up doing. This is a future project that I will be posting as a project of the week. Maybe this will give you an idea. But it's a secret ok. :)
