Cindee, I did that with 2 baskets and planted it with morning glories.

As the vines grew I tied them to the wire to keep the circle. I had mine hanging in a tree and of course the morning glories had a mind of their own and it wasn't long before they were winding their way in the tree branches:-) Ruined the ball effect:-)

I have 2 hanging balls made the same way. But I only put plants in the bottom half this year. but it look so different and special. I love those on a pedestal.

Wow, Cindee, what a great idea. My puppy knocked over my gazing ball and stand. The ball broke, and I was going to buy one to replace it--I think I have a couple of those half round baskets in the shed--think I'll look for them and try your idea too. Even without plants in it, that looks way cool! Luvs

I think it is a wonderful idea. I did something close to that, except I hung mine. I left the coconut liners in mine..wired two together to make a ball..cut holes in the liner and filled it with various sedums and hung it on a long extender from the eves of my house. It is quite pretty and needs little water. Post pics after yours grows a bit..it should be really pretty.

Okay Cindee..you are responsible for my wanna do list getting longer and longer! I love the looks of the round planter. I thought once I retired that I would have plenty of time to do all these neat things but..... I am really getting bogged down and then you come up with this :) I don't have any in my stash but you can bet I will have really soon!!

just have to do one now.I have a few stainless half rounds i almost dumped last year.I just can't keep up with the watering of smaller baskets.But I have an idea for a pipe and these balls.i'll post a pic but it won't be for so long... spring is just to slow!!

I was going to suggest that you could sit one of those dishes that you set under a pot to keep water from getting on your floor or table. The ones that look like they are clay. Then you could have a small bird bath on top that is easy to remove and wash.

I have a bird bath that I don't like...it's too big and Way too heavy. I think I'll ask on freecycle if anyone has just the stand they'd like to get rid of.

I'd like to get a plant that stays close and not vine unless you could keep the vine tucked in and I'd like it to flower.
Maybe even some impatients.

See what you started Cindee!?! I went to Big Lots today and picked up two of the hanging planters for $5 each. Mine are made with flat metal (kind of like barrel hoops only skinnier...) Now I just have to find a stand for the sphere. I really like the look of your cement birdbath stand, but don't imagine I'll find one that isn't expensive. I don't think I'll plant mine like you did, though yours is GORGEOUS- I really like the sculptural look of the open metal work. Maybe I'll just put a smallish planted pot inside the sphere. I'll post pics when I get mine put together! Kathy

Kathy that sounds really nice. I like the plain ball too just sitting on the stand. The moss/flowers hide the ball. I have seen topiary balls at the nursery for 150.00 without any plants on them! I do like the look of it just sitting alone. I bet yours will be really nice(-: I found my pedestal at a garage sale for 5.00 its an old one so I was really happy to get it. Just keep watching I bet you find one too. Most people throw out things that are not "perfect" I have another pedestal I got from a friend that she didn't want anymore because the birdbath thing broke. Its cement too. I put a bb on that. It had a hole in the middle of the pedestal so I put a piece of rebar in it to hold the bb from falling off. Also at some Big Box stores they sell the pedestal and the birdbath part separate. You might find a deal there. WM just had some for sale last weekend. They were like 10.00 on sale. You could get something to use as a form and pour concrete in it and make your own pedestal(-: So many ideas so little time....LOL(-: Good luck(-: Don't forget to take pictures(-:

I must have missed this!I love it! I love the look of the cherub perched on the ball. I have some of those wire baskets somewhere,and I've been seeing a lot of cherubs lately at yard sales and thrift stores, I should have snagged one to make this. I have a plastic birdbath that's wobbly,and DH keeps saying he's going to fill the bottom with cement and use it as a form to make a base,then cut the plastic off. This would be the perfect project:) And Pattico I love yours,too! Hmmmmmm, I'm running out of choices for blooming plants! lol

Patti - Evolvus 'Blue Daze' - great annual for sun - fills in nicely in containers, I'm sure it would work for this. Might try some of the trailing zinnias, too. These are two easy to grow annuals for sun.

Wow, how did I miss this?! What a beautiful idea, and I think we all have those baskets somewhere, because the flowers ALWAYS die in them!!

I was going to refill mine this year...but the birds had pecked out all the coconut liner to make nests with...all I had left was a dirt ball in there...if I would have tried watering it, it would have washed all the dirt out.

I looked but never found any replacement liners to put all that dirt back into....lol

I didn't get near the things done this year that I wanted to do.

Couldn't you line the balls with bird netting, would have to wire it several places, or maybe mesh bags like onions sometimes come in. HD sold the coconut liners but they were expensive. even a black blouse in bottom part would keep dirt in. 4-6 layers of black net used in crafts & wedding gown underskirts, Oh, how about pantyhose that has runs, nylon is strong,come in black & wouldn't look too bad while it's filling in. That's all I can think of!! Jan

I can just see a bunch of those hanging from a tree in different lengths with beautiful flowers covering them, (((sigh))), I hate losing summer!!!
