Hi,my name is Diana, I am new, just joined after reading all the neat stuff you all are doing. I went to the Dollar Tree to look for plates and found a real treasure there. In the aisle wherer you would find votive cups there are dessert size colored glass candle holders that are already shaped like flowers. They are in lovely pastels. They are individually boxed and wrapped with a ribbon. Anyway I bought a dozen and will give it a try. They also have the votive cups 3 for a dollar for the centers. They are very light weight. Just thought I would pass it on. How can you tell if glass is tempered, does anyone know? We have a drill press and most of the flea market plates that were heavy and clear, shattered.

I don't have an answer about drilling, but hubby, who 'has to' figure things out is working on an inexpensive way to attach a stem.

Did you see the brassy wind hangy thingies? I got a few and may try to attach the garden bells that are half finished upstairs.

Thanks for the tip on where to shop Diana. I'll have to check out the one near me. I got the wind things last time, Mojo.

By the way, I refer to this store as the Twenty Dollar Tree.
I can't seem to get out of there for less no matter what.

Thanks all! To clarify, the plates are all glass. I got the plain blue ones at Dollar Tree for a buck apiece, the rest of the clear glass items I got at Goodwill. I used the glass paint on the clear glass items to give them some contrasting color to the cobalt blue back plates. Feel free to post your glass plate creations so we can all be inspired!

Thank you Marlene Daise NonaCook and Concretenprimroses. I am slowly working on the background fill for the second window. So anxious to get them hung up. I bounce back and forth between my glass , house chores ,yard chores and helping hubby in his shop working on the old truck. This is a good thing he has ambition to do things. He just needs help because the chemo induced neuropathy in his hands still bothers him. I never aspired to be a mechanic. He is changing wheels on the old flat bed from split rims to regular. This is a good thing and means I will have a truck for hauling things. So I am not complaining too much. I keep finding bits of garden junk stash in my hoard and adding it all to the flower bed for decor. The plants are filling in a little showing promise of things to come. I had a change of plans in the fountain department. I needed a stronger pump to make water come from the watering can so instead I used a fountain frog and did crystals on the watering can spout. Baby steps. I just need time to be able to go sit in my new little patio area. LOL I need to get some pond plants too.

The only thing I've had work is to take a knife, putty knife, or pie server and start working around the edges until it will come off. If it hasn't been set for a long time, it will probably come off easier. Good luck!

Very nice! They look good in your beds. Did you drill or glue your plates? We were in drought here for several years. Made up for it this summer, though, and I'm thankful for that, but I believe it's rained every single day for 3 months. Just been too wet and hot to do much outdoors. Then with all the rain comes all the mosquitos. Getting a touch of cabin fever (even though there's always plenty to do inside, I'm used to being able to play outside more :) but fall is comming, in fact it's here today, isn't it. Anyway... Thanks for sharing, it's fun to see what others are up to.

Gosh, who was it, who posted some pics of $1 flower plates? I wonder if they are the same ones? I'll have to get to the nearby Dollar Tree to scope it out. Thanks!

I'm not sure how you can tell if they are tempered or not, but we have good luck with using a diamond studded hole saw to drill glass. I keep the dish sprayed with water, while DH goes slowly with the drill press. Don't put too much pressure when drilling, or they will definately break. Every now and then one still breaks, but this has done well for us.

tempered glass is what they use to make auto glass and big slider windows. I think you need to use a special bit for glass, like you do porcelain. It is too bad she did not find glass with the plastic core, then she could have kept it together and not had to piece as much.

Thanks for the info, I wanted to make some plate flowers. =) As the for the glass, I seriously doubt it's tempered, too much work and cost to temper something that's going to sell for a buck. If you order tempered glass for a door, they have to run it through a special machine and it has to be a certain dimension to fit. I don't think they temper anything but plate glass with any regularity.
