Cherry Tree Disease

Some of our cherry trees have small red bumps up and down the branches. The trees are only two years old and small. Can somebody please sugges what this could be and how to cure or prevent it from spreading

It could be scale. Can you scrape them off? If so it is probably scale. I've controlled them with Malathion during the growing season. But your first line of defense is dormant oil.

Thanks. yes I can scrape them off. We are in third year of becoming certified organic so I wont be able to use Malathiion. Would you tell me what dormant oil is please

Queen, I think you have two common cherry tree diseases; leave spot and canker. Myclobutanil brand I use is Immunox made by Spectracide. It also helps with Cedar Apple Rust if you have apples. Canker is harder. Common practice is to keep a tree healthy (in pot - not letting the tree becomes water- stressed or over-wateried) and cut off cankers branch (if possible) I attached a link for you to check it out. Hi, I planted two cherry trees here in Massachusetts. This is the second season. They were large tree to start maybe 6ft. I have a problem with winter moth. The worms can shred a tree overnight. I had brown spots on some cherries last year too. It is common when the weather is wet and humid. I recently read somewhere that its almost not worth planting cherries in the northeast. You're not being paranoid :-) Unfortunately, cherries and many of their close relatives are extremely prone to diseases and insect problems. These problems tend to be exacerbated by the PNW's cool, damp weather. It is so significant an issue that the Washington State University extension service has written an entire publication on the problems befalling cherries in this area. Whether or not you choose to plant one is up to you. Fruiting cherries tend to be a little less prone to problems than do the ornamental forms, but they still get their share. If you have an open, sunny location with good soil and decent drainage, there are some newer cultivars that are both self-fertile and more disease resistant than the older Bings. And a several of them were developed in BC or at WSU, so are better suited for our less than ideal cherry growing weather. I'd look first for 'Sweetheart', but you could also try 'Lapins', 'Glacier' or 'Stella'.

At this time of year? Nothing. But you might want to post photos to see if anyone can ID the problem so you can be prepared for any dormant or spray treatment next season. Alternately, taking in representative samples to your local extension office will achieve the same thing. FWIW, cherries of all types, both fruiting and ornamental, are prone to a whole host of disease and insect issues so not very surprising.

lollyjack: So you are in third yr of being certified organic but you don't know what scale is and haven't heard of dormant oil. No disrespect intended but you have some studying to do. You have a lot more to learn than what I have time to explain. But dormant oil is applied during the dormant season to control scale and eggs of other insects. It is probably the backbone of most organic programs.

Let me second fruitnut's remarks. If you don't know what dormant oil is, you shouldn't be growing anything for public sale, organic or otherwise. You need to do some studying, and you can start by entering "dormant oil" in your Google search. Growing fruit organically is more than just wishing. A lot more.

Thanks for you help. Where I come from we don't refer to this as dormant oils. I was under the impression it was something I hadn't heard of .
