Zone 5 planted shoes/boots problem

I planted up shoes and boots 2 years ago with semps and sedum. They were fine last year. This year they all look dead. I know the weather has been screwy but they show no signs of life! what could have happened?

Maybe the people on the Cactus & Succulents forum could answer your question better. I kill succulents all the time.

Maybe its to wet? My boots stay really moist no matter how much drainage I have.
Just a thought.

I wouldn't worry about it; lots of bulbs sprout in the fall when there's a warm spell. Sometimes, the leaf tips get burned when they freeze, but the flower buds are usually still deep in the bulbs at this point.

Hackberries have yellow fall color, interesting bark, and will reseed themselves. Sugar maples, as well as red and white oaks do well on well drained sites. Some sugar maples turn yellow/red/orange, others just yellow. Some oaks have beautiful colors, others just brown leaves that hang on. But even that is interesting in the winter when everything else is bare. Mix in some white pine for added winter color. Just north of here in the Wisconsin Dells area you often see white pine growing in the deciduous forest. I don't recommend red, Austrian, or Scotch pine. Too many problems. White spruce is another possibility. Avoid ash for now with the EAB problem. Aspen groves have beautiful yellow fall color and grow fast and will spread in a natural area. American basswood is another native tree with yellow fall color.

This question comes up in some form every year at this time, and it is interesting to see the variation in responses from past years. In the past, people in northern states have often been very cautionary about planting perennials after mid September, though my own experience is that the vast majority of hardy perennials are planted fine in the fall as long as the ground is still workable. And essentially everybody who responded above seems to agree -- that's different from past years. In Michigan, as most other places in the NE, we have had an unusually warm fall (record late 90 degree temperature October 7), and the ground is still very warm -- great for planting almost anything. I have occasionally had some issues with frost heaving of fall planted perennials in late winter and early spring due to alternating freezing and thawing of soil. But a firm but gentle step right on the crown of the plant to push it back into the soil will solve almost all problems like that. Woody plants can be planted even far later, well into December even in the north especially for deciduous plants. Even hardy roses are fine late into the fall. Pickering Roses in Ontario routinely ships their roses out for planting to the northern states in the first week of November. I remember planting about 20 roses one early November in temps of 10 degrees F. I don't think my frozen fingers ever recovered, but all the roses grew fine the next year.

boots are a problem, bcs the stuff you usually can buy for shoes won't actually hold them. And I actually think that HIGHER shelves are better than on the floor. We think somehow that because we wear shoes near the ground, they should be STORED near the ground. But I found, w/ my shoe cabinet that I made for myself, that having them higher up was easier--I wasn't bending over to pick them up and then AGAIN to put them on. How big is your closet? Can you devote a vertical 1/4 or 1/2 to shoes & boots? or, can you have people keep their SHOES in their bedroom, and only their snowboots in the closet? Stacks and Stacks has a huge collection of organizers. Here's one that has a boots compartment, which would be less bending, bcs you could grab the boots by their tops. But it would be nice to have this taller to accommodate more. You *could* just get a basic bookcase of some narrow size that will fit in there, and buy some extra shelves so you can space them very closely together in the places where you want shoes. And, you could have a "tall boots" section and a "short boots" section and an "even shorter shoes" section or three. The shelves would have an advantage that you could put baskets on them to hold mittens, etc. (though those could also go on the back of the door in pockets). I have some succulents also. Mine get leggy and parts begin to die. I find that when they get root bound, they begin to flower more and die off in spots. I take mine out and start over. You can use same container, just clean and redo with new soil. I make sure their is good drainage also.

Did you leave them out all winter-in Michigan? It could be that the roots were above ground, even in the shoes/boots and the cold freezing weather got to the roots as they were still above ground. Just a thought.

I am in zone 5 and plant hen & chicks in my boots. I've never had a problem with them wintering over. I have sedums in my strawberry pots and a little wheelbarrow and they are looking pretty good right now - wintered over OK and are growing again. Wish I could help!

Bummer. We had a really cold winter season (ZONE 6) one year and our sedum which we had planted in boots died. My wife and I have shoes for everyone in our family and planted them with hens and chicks too. They do well...except the deer munched on them this year!

Not sure how your weather is, but here in NH it was 60 a week ago and Wed we had 12" of snow. I have a pair of boots that I planted with hens and chicks at least 8 years ago. Every spring I think they are dead. Then, when I am not looking, they come to life!!! If you are still getting freezes...give them a little more time.

I agree with gram, just wait a little while longer they may surprise you, mine also have lookede like they didn't make it and when i look again they are coming alive,
12" gram, wow we only got 8" and alot melted yesterday
