Drinking water problems (OT)

I have been using bottled 5 gal spring water. When I changed the last jug I noticed it had some stuff around the pour hole where it sits in the crock. This stuff looked like moldy rubber cement and had been sitting in my water and was half coming loose.

I was thinking of buying a water filter and filtering my city tap water. Can home table top filter systems give me water as good as spring water from tap water?

What is a good filter to get? Or should I just switch brands of spring water suppliers?

I personally would reccomend a water softening system. It will come with a whole house filter, and you can get filtered water from your sink. You won't believe what it gets out of your water. It's a little expensive up front, but it saves a lot in the long run and increases the value of your home.

some of those bottled wates are water from the local system wth the chlorine removed and deodorises, and those that aren't from that source have to be dosed up with chlorine under health controls then they deodorise and remove the chlorine.

any water that is active water will grow mould/fungus when light comes into contact with it, we used to have issue of green slimy stuff even in bough water when we used to do that. so found we hade to cover the bottle with say a thickish pillow case to ommit any light contacting the water.

also might be you look for another supplier? i've never seen that sort of stuff before.

we prefer tank water.

No personal experience, but in reading about rainwater collection systems someplace, there was a device of some sort which caught the first X number of gallons of water coming off the roof and diverted it away from the path for drinking water. Then, after the roof had a chance to "rinse", the rest of that rainfall event went into the storage tank intended for drinking. I think adding an air bubbler would help prevent stagnation and provide some circulation of the tank, and a clean, dark, covered barrel from which you occasionally suctioned out whatever settled on the bottom would inhibt other growth through lack of the amterials necessary to grow.

Connect pex to galvanized for drinking water

"There is nothing wrong with connecting brass to galvanized. It's done all the time and I've never seen it be a problem." So if brass to galvanized is ok, then it would be fine to use copper pipe connected to a brass fitting that connects to galvanized pipe, right?. My preference is to unscrew a galv elbow from the old pipe and connect either copper or PEX pipe to the threaded galv. pipe., but if I run into problems and can'r remove the elbow cleanly, my backup solution is to fit a coupler to un-threaded galv pipe. Other alternatives are:
Install an under sink water filter on your cold water line inyour kitchen.
The filter has to trap the inpurities/solid and get rid of bacteria and smell. So it would pay off to install one that has good cartridge filter.

Another one is to install a filter on your faucet. Only activate it for drinking and making coffee/tee(maybe cooking). Their filter is good up to 200 gal. So if you use about 2 gal per day , a single filter should last over 3 months. I personally have one of these. Of course, our municipal water here is fine, but I want to be safe.I will never buy water, never. As they said mostof them are just filtered municipal water. SPRING WATER?! I doubt it.

I used to have a PUR water filter that attached to the faucet. I thought it gave good tasting water. My current house and the one before came with a fridge with a filtered water dispenser which I really like (except for the cost of replacing the cartridge in the current fridge, holy cow!).
