I think it's a janet craig dracaena. It looks like the compacta type. You can cut it, root the top and then have two plants. The bottom part will put out growth from the sides of the cut.

Use something very sharp to make the cut. They are oftentimes harder to cut than they seem.

Dracaenas routinely lose bottom leaves (and they don't grow back) so end up looking like lollipops a lot.

I did mine just as amany said last summer and now have two nice plants. I used rocks (on top of soil) to stabilize the top until it had roots to hold it in the pot. Be sure to pot plenty of "trunk" to develop enough roots to sustain the top. Looks nice and healthy from mid point up.

A funny thing happened when I did mine. Centered it perfectly in new heavy clay pot, added soil and when I moved it the trunk slid out of the drainage hole in the bottom. Had to dump soil and put a flat stone down there to hold it in. Sandy

Great, this is exactly what I will try. I will cut the top portion off and remove the bottom layers of leaves and plant the stem. Do I root it in water first or would you just pot it right up? I'll leave the bottom in the pot it is in now and cross my fingers. Do you bottom water or top water yours?

Newbi, I'm pretty sure you have a dracaena 'pineapple' a relative of Janet Creig, and very similar in appearance..Sorry, I don't know its botanical name.
Remove brown tips..Though soil needs to dry between waterings, I think yours dried a bit too much..Apply one good watering, then wait till soil dries (crumbly) then give a drink. When u clip brown edges, leave about 1/8 inch of brown..This should prevent foliage from continueing to brown..that is unless it's not getting enough water in the future.
Water from the top, not the bottom..Bottom-watering works well for smaller plants, like African Violets.
The difference between JC and Pineapple dracaenas..notice how your leaves grow really close toether, stiffer, and lean upwards? JC's grow longer leaves, softer, and when grown their full size grows a bit downward at the tips.

Now I am totally confused. Is Pineapple Dracaena the same as compacta? When I google images for pineapple dracaena so many different images come up. Toni, even if this is the pineapple version can I still cut the top off and put in soil and hope it will root and start another plant? As you can see from my pictures it has become very unsightly and something needs to be done. I will trim the brown edges as you suggest.

Newbi, I don't think it matters which it is. You'd do the same for either. I think Toni was just trying point out the different shapes and growing patterns of different Dracaena--you'd be amazed how many there are.

As far as cutting back, since you're doing a complete cut and re-rooting I'd just pull all the bad leaves off and use those nodes (the part the leaves are growing from) for producing new roots inside the pot. If the trunk is too long, cut it again and stick the extra piece in soil. It may root too.

The bottom stump will take a while to resprout but when it does it will be from the top, so take that into consideration when you cut. If you want leaves down low, cut it low but above the soil. Good luck, I'm sure you'll have nice plants. Dracaena are very forgiving. Sandy

PS: It would be good to cover the top with a plastic bag while its rooting, just to keep leaves from losing moisture while it has no roots to take it up.

Yep, it's called Janet Creig compacta, but, once again they changed names..LOL..Common name is Pineapple dracaena. There's a pic under www.denverplants.com

The name used to be Dracaena deremensis 'Craigi Compacta' but that may have changed. They often do.
