Morning Glory Barndoor

Here's my latest barn door from today ... Morning Glories made with faucet handles and an old small barndoor (only 25" high). I sanded off rough paint, painted white (exterior paint), screwed on faucet handles, used acrylic paint for stems/leaves & then sprayed with polyurthlene a bit. Added a small piece of scalloped trim at the bottom for a fence look and a little rough-wood carved bird. Had lots of fun doing this one! Jeanne S.

Got inspired to get at this project because of Robolady's posting of "flowers that don't need water"... and because it continues to KEEP snowing!!!

My ivy leafed small light blue morning glories bloomed first and got to about four foot tall. The Early morning, or tall mix got tallest at about ten foot and bloomed much later. Because they needed to be sown after frost I didn't see a lot of difference between my direct sown and winter sown. I didn't use the best soil though and my drainage was bad. This year I'm doing more and will be direct sowing for ease of planting out.

Hi Gerris2, "Heavenly Blue is in a different species (Ipomoea tricolor) from Clear Waterfall, which is Ipomoea nil." Good to know. It might be interesting to cross-pollinate those two. Interspecific hybrids can produce some interesting results. I produced these new zinnias via interspecific hybridization. I think some very unusual morning glories would also be possible through interspecific hybridization. ZM

Prep the bind weeds by cutting back stems to about 8-12" (longer stems if necessary because you want stems with leaves on them, not just bare, leafless stems), from the ground where stems emerge from the ground. These cut, remaining bind weed stems emerging from the ground, if twisting around anything, especially rose canes, need to be gently unraveled and laid across the ground, directed away from the rose canes as much as possible. Use the strongest SYSTEMIC weed killer available, strong enough to kill poison ivy, but do not spray it onto the cut and 'toppled,' bind weed stems. The chance of getting spray onto the roses is too great. Pour a little weed killer into a disposable cup and very, very gently and tenderly brush it generously onto the bind weed stems and foliage lying on the ground using a 2" wide, very soft bristled paint brush. Take great care not to splash or get any weed killer onto any part of adjacent rose bushes. Do not be too rough in prepping the cut stems for their weed killer application. You want undamaged stems and leaves left on the 'to be weed killer painted sections,' so as to get good systemicc absorption to the below ground bind weed parts. The systemic action of the weed killer should kill the whole underground, regenerative parts of the bind weed. A later follow up application may be needed if new growth occurs. Love what you did with a simple door! You never realize just how pretty the faucet handles are until you see them used this way or the flowers robolady posted. Wonderful job!
