Hoya Rubra plant (wax plant)

I didn't see a forum for this plant. It is kind of rare, I think. Anyway if anyone has one, maybe you can answer my questions. I have had one since March and it looks healthy and beautiful. No blooms but the verigation in the leaves is lovely. Anyway, it barely grows at all. I fertilize once a month. And water rarely. The webpage said to saturate and then let completely dry out. This plant never dries out. After a couple of weeks, I always go ahead and give it a splash of water. Is is normal for this plant to need watered so rarely. I would include a pic, but haven't figured out how to put a pic with my post yet. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

There's a Hoya Forum just next door (see the top of this page). Since I participate there as well, I'll refer you there for future use, but start you out here.

Sorry, this Hoya is lovely but not a rare plant, it's actually quite common (these types anyway, that can be bought locally).

They're not the fastest growing plants, depending on the type, sounds like you've got the KP (Krimson Princess) w/ the variegation towards the inner part of the leaf, which Exotic Angel (the nursery who grows/distributes these) insists on calling Rubra (I think due to the red stems, rubra means red).

Not sure which website you saw & are referring to, but "saturate" is likelty to be a problem. Part of the problem, is that if these plants are from Exotic Angel (EA for short) they never dry out & we often (those at Hoya forum) have a problem w/ their mix, it NEVER dries out.

The once month fertilizer is fine, but the drying out is an issue. Ordinarily, I water my Hoyas about once a week, in summer perhaps a bit more depending on the particular Hoya (there are many kinds & many of us find collecting them, quite addictive). FYI: they're not the fastest to bloom (at least not for me & many others I know at Hoya forum).

ha ha Jan I just emailed you about Krimson Queen!!! lol Do you guys want me to do any trade transporting? I am meeting Jan at lunch Thursday and also going to Ricky's so i can take Helen,s. Here's my lil Krimson Queen! The pink edges don't come thru in the photos. Either of you want some of this one. I am sure it's pretty common. It seems so much happier out under the pool screen than in my bedroom window. I got this 1/3 this size a couple yrs ago from Lindaleaf. BTW Helen, You want some cuttings of that coral crown behind the Krimson Queen? It's getting kind of tall and I might as well start a few cuttings of it for Ricky's.

Hi and thank you all for your advice. I do not know where to go to download a photo of the Hoya plant onto the site, can someone tell me were I can find that. I am sorry about calling it a Hawaiian wax plant as that was what was on the card the lady gave me when I bought the start. She wouldn't even tell me how to get other starts but I finally found out it is as easy as just sticking the clipping in dirt... wow they grow beautifully. My plant never had a fragrance but as I said the one in the jar she showed me sure did, oh it was wonderful so I am a bit disappointed but the flower is so pretty that makes it all worth while. So easy to take care of too. I see several plants that are probably the one I have when I look through the photos but if I find out how to download it I will put it on the website. Mentha, I think that H. carnosa rubra variegata is the proper botanical name for 'Krimson Princess." My understanding is that back in the 1970's, someone marketed the two variegates using the trade names 'Krimson Princess' and 'Krimson Queen.' I've been told it was more of a gimmick to sell the same plant that was already in distribution under a different name. Kind of like the sports of Jade. You'll see the one that's called 'Gollum' marketed as 'Shrek Ears.' It's the same plant, but give it a new name and it's like it's something NEW. But here's the thing - I don't call the solid greens that I take off my KP "rubra" because it looks nothing like the one I KNOW is rubra. So I just call it another clone of carnosa. I know - it's all terribly confusing. Which is why it's better to use the true botanical names of plants, even though it's charming to use loveable names like "Sweetheart Hoya," or "Wax Plant," or when we come up with our own special names.
