asparagus coming up now

Weird dry hot weather killed off my asparagus ferns early this year so I cut them down around mid september. They were all brown and dead. Then we got 6 inches of rain and they are shooting up again. I want to make sure I get spears in the spring so what should I do with them now?

Good question. My first guess is they need to photosynthesize some products to store in roots to survive the winter. Willing to be told otherwise...

Such wild weather swings will be much more common in the future, BTW.

Some research into growing a fall crop of asparagus for harvest indicated that the crowns were damaged by harvesting twice in the same year. I suggest you let them grow until frost gets them and then cut them down just as if they had grown all summer.

It is possible to get two seasons of harvest from asparagus if you plan for it. The article cited below gives directions.

Dave, I did mean bone meal :) I'll put some nice combo fertilizer out this weekend. Thanks for the info. Paul, I certainly hope they will produce because just 60 miles north of here is Stockton and that area produces great, huge amounts commercially! They do have a different soil make up, it being delta flood plains, but the summer and winters are the same. Your mugginess is what we don't have here in the summers; just lots of dry heat! Elaine

By this time, in your zone, you can assume you have a problem and would be justified in digging carefully down to find out.

If they didn't come up this year, it's doubtful that they'll come up the next. I'd plant new ones. If you decide to plant new ones, you might as well dig up the old ones to see if you can see an obvious problem.

or if its near a perch.. blame a bird ... many tree/shrubs.. need to get a few true leaves before an ID can be made ... one thing for sure.. if there are a hundred of them around.. weed at will ... maybe leave one .. for curiosity sake.... ken
