Glass for Totems - I think I'm ready!

After looking at your totems for a couple of years, I am finally going to make some for my own gardens. I've been collecting glass for the past two weeks and think I have some great stuff to start with. I am going to try the Lexel adhesive since it is supposed to be clearer than silicone.

So what do you think? I am really excited about some of the pieces, such as the punch bowl the acorn lamp shade and the center of a cut glass lamp. Many of the plates and bowls have a flower theme. Please excuse the blue water in that one vase as I was cleaning it with denture tabs. :)

WOW Adina, you have collected some great pieces of glass. Can't wait to see what combinations you come with when making your totems. Love the acorn piece the most. Looking forward to seeing your pics. of your creations. Conni

Ohhhh, looks like you got all the right stuff for the makings of a fantastic totem. Can't wait to see it when done, please repost pics then.

Oh gosh, Haley, I'm so envious of that one plate with the dogs that look like greyhounds on the left side of it. One sitting and one laying. I collect anything greyhound and whippet, and tho I've often seen the brass plates with foxhounds, I've not seen one with greyhounds. If by chance you'd be interested in selling it, please email me privately! You made a great haul, and WELCOME out of Lurkdom! No going back now, LOL.

Yes, I did use the bent spoon. I used the GEII and stacked them together, then let them cure for 24 hours before flipping them and adding the spoon to the back with the E6000. I let that cure for another 24 hours before placing them in the garden. Mine were heavy as well, but as long as you make sure to press each piece to make good contact and let them cure long enough, they should be fine. I have really enjoyed mine, it added a lot to my back yard! Good luck, and be sure to post pics so we can all drool :)

I had a good chuckle reading this thread. :-) Winter I can definitely wait for...Christmas!!?? No...please, it's bad enough when they are playing Christmas carols in the stores at Halloween, let along gardeners on the GW forums wishing it were here in September! lol Fall has always been my favorite time of year. Now, it's a toss up between spring and fall. I really enjoy the change in season. We tried moving to the South once and stayed for 9 months. We moved back home. We really missed the seasons, more than we thought we would. Like dtd, I also don't want a greenhouse,or to be gardening all year. I enjoy the break when nothing has to be tended to outside and I can think about something else besides being totally immersed in gardening. [g] This year, I am particularly ready to be finished with the yard. It has been so dry and the yard just doesn't look as good as it usually would at this time of year. We still have a lot to do before we are finished for the year though. I will be glad to cover up some of the mess out there and start fresh next year. Don't you think it has a bit of a melancholy feel though, this time of year? There's just something about the different light in the fall. The way it is dark earlier maybe? So different than the excitement of spring returning. pm2

Glo - Thanks for reassuring me! I hope your move is awesome! My husband has wanted to move us to Colorado for years and hasn't managed to quite convince me yet, although I think it's absolutely wonderful there. LOL So, Winter Solstice is the same everywhere? (LOL)... I guess you're seeing how little I know... Nancy - Thanks for the tip! I am gonna have to watch the lead hand myself as I way oversowed my cantaloupes this fall. The poor babies are fighting each other and giving me 2 to 5 inches fruits that don't look like they're EVER going to full ripen. I will be much more careful in the future. I'll try to not get TOO excited when I go to plant. LOL Carrie - Wow! That's some really good info. That's exactly the kind of thing I was worried about. I'm grateful for the heads up. Liz - LIZ!!! Hey, girl! Fancy meeting you here and there and now here! hee hee... The whole last paragraph of what you wrote is exactly what is concerning me. I know that I personally wear shorts through-out almost the whole winter except for those few crazy days that we see. 50's or what have you is not cold to me... We do get the occasional freeze, but then a week or two later at most you could have a 70+ degree high! All this in the same few days / weeks / months... it's SO crazy! Oh, and if they're having a plantswap around the 8th of December as well, I sure want to know as I'll be out that way. :-) Blessings, Angela

Adina, you really found some nice pieces--some I'd love just to use on my tables! LOL

Wonderful glass! I have several pieces similar to yours.
The one piece that I would not use on a totem, would be the piece at the bottom of the first photo. The one with the 'flower' in the bottom and the 'beaded swirls' around the side. Once in awhile, after I have bought stuff for
garden junk, I find a piece that I just can't make myself use in the garden!

Me too, Nona, I love the look of cut glass, and sometimes the piece is just so pretty I can't use it for a totem. Maybe later--but not now. ;o) I love the vase in the back on picture 3 and the big round bowl next to it. Those look like keepers to me. ;o) Luvs

Thanks everyone! If I had room in the house, I might keep a few of these to use, but I have very little cabinet space and I figured I would at least get to enjoy them everyday in the garden.

You should have seen how excited I was at this one Thrift Store. The lady at the counter was intrigued, so I told her what I was doing (sometimes I hate to do that because then I think they will raise the prices because there is a market for certain things...LOL). Anyway, she instructed me that I had to return and show her pictures of what I make.

I hope to get started stacking and gluing this week. I imagine it will be a slower process than usual since I will be using Lexel.
