When you retire

I had a job that kept me on the road 5 sometimes 6 days a week. I got through sitting in airports and stranded in who knows not where by going through the net and saving items that I would do one day when I retired.

I feel I have to thank you all for being my support to get through the day. You guys are so great. Soooo...

That day has come. I would like to show you somethings I found even here that I drooled over and said one day I am going to copy that....LOL This is just a small sample

Well, you have some interesting things here and quite the variety too! The red bird totem is one I made a couple of years ago. Nothing extraordinary in how it was made. I used GE Silicone II to hold it together. The cardinal on top was actually a female that I painted to look like a male since I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for at the time. I keep it on my front porch so the bird won't fade and it's lasted just fine. It's still one of my favorites. Thanks for putting it in your list of favorites too!

Well I haven't actually put them together yet, but I did remove all the fabrics from silk covered shoulder pads from silk charmeuse dress blouses; beautiful jewel tones. I washed & pressed all the silk & then saw how slippery it was to sew, so I tabled the project (now I know a bit about fusibles, etc.). For me, removing their fabrics (if they're nice enough to keep) was worth it. Someday I WILL put these together. Back to your issue. Did you want to use the pads themselves or just the fabrics?

I have been thinking a lot about comfort zones since Katrina. People refused to get on planes to go to states with low unemployment rates, and inexpensive housing so I asked myself where I would be willing to go. I am from Washington State. I would be pretty comfortable going to Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, Montana, the Dakotas, and Arizona. Anything else seems too far away, too foreign, too unfamiliar. I think this carries over into retirement planning. I couldn't go to Georgia because it is too far away. Until it got too expensive, people from Washington who wanted a warmer climate when they retired went to Caifornia. Now it is Arizona and Arizona is where I plan to go. It seems to me that people in the Northeast are more likely to stay on the east coast. I don't know what people in the heartland do. Do you go to Texas, New Mexico or ? Part of it is that I don't want to be more than a 3 hour plane ride from my children, but I think there is more to it than that. There may be very little difference from one state to another, but I don't know that and something in me seeks the familiar. Coming from a "blue" state, I will settle into the only "blue" county in Arizona. I would like to be more adventurous, but I always find myself seeking out the familiar. Someone I knew years ago had moved to Washington from the east coast. She said that it was so important to her that television was the same everywhere. Some people derided her comment because of her reliance on television, but I think I know what she meant. Once while visiting in South America, I found myself watching Plaza de Sesamo (Sesame Street) just for the familiar characters.

I sincerely doubt you are insurable at this point. Most plans would require you pay a high percentage over even the Standard rate, or make you wait at least a year before writing coverage on you. celticmoon is correct on the healthcare costs. A comprehensive health insurance costs slightly over $1K/mo. average for a couple. The advantage is that they can't drop you since it is a continuation of coverage. Also, wasn't there something in the President's stimulus plan about helping to pick up some of the cost of COBRA insurance for the unemployed - although I'm not sure that would cover self-termination/retirement, it may be restricted to those who are laid off. Maximum you would want to take is a 4% distribution annually. I have no idea what the immigration policy is in England, but your dollars would not go far as currently the US dollar is weak vs the pound, about $1.64/one pound. Canada's immigration policy varies per province. British Columbia is now almost completely closed to immigration unless you have $300K cash and intend to open a business. I think some of the other provinces are more open to immigration, but you will be contending with more severe weather. It's no joke how cold it gets in Calgary (my MIL's relatives live there so she visits regularly...in summer!). If you are really strapped for cash and want to retire, I'm afraid going South of the border is your best alternative. There are many cities with US ex-pats and very good healthcare. We have friends who have had to move out of the US because they couldn't afford to retire here. You should note that Medicare does NOT cover anything if you live outside the US. Medical care in South and Central America can be very good, however, and is inexpensive by US standards. Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Mexico all have large ex-pat communities.

I've rented what used to be step-uncle's house and have had a substantial garden (actually, about three, now) for several years. I figure that I can live here, 30 km. (20 mi.) from the city as long as I can drive. I'm thankful to be enjoying good health: it's seldom that my body tells me, "Listen, you darned old fool - you can't DO that any more!". Had a pulmonary emboloism last fall, but apart from some discomfort and some pain for part of a day, alleviated with rat poison, I'm pretty well functioning as before. I rather figure that I won the lottery - for clots hitting one's heart cause heart attacks ... and hitting one's brain cause strokes. In the lung ... pain awoke me in the early morning, but when I was upright the pain went away, and after most of a day in emerg., finished with a shot of blood thinner, about 20 min. after which my breathing pretty well returned to normal ... and now I'm on the pill - well, a pill a day for five days and half a pill for each of the other two. Good wishes for a fruitful retirement, folks. And do some things to help build a better and happier community, not only here but world-wide, for we have some serious problems to which we need to attend. ole joyful

Glad you liked my favorite color yellow pots. They were planters or dishes. The tall square one is an ashtray likely used in a business that I picked up on from curb and painted.

The little shed in the link below inspired me to build an open potting bench with a roof. It's not quite finished, but close and will be seen here in the near future. It made use of a lot of wood I drug home from the curb and some other items that were kicking around the yard.

Marlene, Mary, thank you. You do not know the smile you put on my face during those long days on the road.

Mary I am honored you are famous. LOL. I am going to use styrofoam boxes to create the tall planter you have and I found some yellow paint at Home Depot in their return area for 1.00. This is going to be fun. I will start looking for the plates at the thrift store. I have the purple plants that you used and it is one of my favorite houseplants because it grows like a weed.

Also, thank you for the extra info on how you created your masterpieces. Both of these pieces spoke to me they are both so cheerful in color and that is what drew me to them.

I have done some mosaic floors and walls in my homes but never had time to do any outside garden items. I have been collecting tile at discontinued outlets and the big box stores when I saw them on sale. So I have a lot of tile to do mosaics.

I am getting excited and cannot wait for summer to get here.

"Linda" is Mary...Linda creates so much wonderful recycled garden art! The yellow pots are her's. & she's the Queen of blue bottle garden art in my book, anyway!

Congrats on retirement. I see nothing but fun projects in your future. Sounds like you know what you want to do. I'm hoping to see one of those garden ladies as in the 3rd picture. She's just awesome! All your projects will be fun. Totems are addictive! The yellow planters will be fun too. Enjoy all your projects.
