Recipe 4 deep fried rabbit:

Chard patch planted in large containter planters

Planted and left on ground instead of elevated as required

Deep fried rabbit with gravy is the result!

Dag nabbit rabbit ate 1/2 of my chard plants..........

Ah well it is a really cute rabbit!!

(no we did not catch it so could not eat it)

We're going to have green beans with our fried rabbit if we get the little bunny fried before he eats all our seedlings!

have greened up well and started growing regardless of our cooler than normal temperatures and unusually frequent rains. (the flash makes them look lighter than they really are). My soil is fertile. I had started 2/3rds of them from seed and bought one six pack of California Wonder. They sat without going into the ground too long and were looking pretty sad, yellowing and losing a leaf here and there. That was due to the frequent rains and my giving planting my tomatoes a higher priority. Is your soil fertile?? If not, it might be the wrong thing to do to feed an already stressed plant, so if you do, make it a diluted dose that you give it. If you think that the cans are detrimental to the growth, get them off while the plant is small enough to do so. You can always put a tooth pick, or a nail, straw or other similar thing on each side of the plant, right up against the stem, to keep the cut worms from cutting them off. They have to encircle the plant to do their damage. Good luck with yours, hopefully they will get their roots started good then take off with the top growth. If so, they should produce right up until frost gets them. Just my .02 Bill P.

OK, I'm home now. The other rabbit recipe in this cook book looks like a cousin of Arley's. You can't pull it up through Amazon, so here goes (Dear publisher, please forgive me for posting the recipe if I say the book is worth buying if you own a pressure cooker!): Rabbit Braised with Fresh Bacon, Onion and White Wine 1/2 TBSP olive oil 4 oz fresh bacon or blanched salt pork cut into 1/2x1-inch pieces 1 rabbit (about 2.5 lbs) cut into 6 pieces 1 med-sized white onion, halved and sliced 3/4 inch thick 1 carrot, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch-thick diagonal slices 1 tsp chopped fresh thyme, or 1/2 tsp dried 1/2 tsp salt (optional) 1/2 cup dry white wine 2 TBSP Dijon mustard 1/4 cup water 2 TBSP chopped fresh plat-leaf parsley, for garnish 1. Heat the oil in the pressure cooker over med-high heat. Add the bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, until beginning to soften, 4-5 mins. 2. Add the rabbit pieces ant saute until beginning to turn golden, about 5 mins. 3. Stir in the onion, carrot, thyme, and salt, if using. Add the wine, mustard and water and stir to mix well. Lock the lid and bring to pressure over high heat, about 2 mins. Reduce the heat to med-high and cook for 10 mins. Remove from heat and let sit for 10 mins to finish cooking. 4. With the steam vent pointed away from your face, gently release any remaining pressure. Arrange rabbit, bacon, and vegetables on a serving platter. Taste the sauce, adjust the salt, and pour the sauce over the rabbit and vegetables. Sprinkle the parsley over the top and serve right away. After typing that out, I think I've got no choice but to thaw a bunny and make this for dinner tomorrow night! I'll substitute homemade pancetta or guanciale (haven't decided yet) for the salt pork. One problem with using a charcoal or electric smoker is that chickens can be cooked for 4 or 5 hours and be fully cooked, but the meat is still a tad pinkish. Perfectly safe, but a little disconcerting. Sadly, the fact that salmonella has weaseled its way into the reproductive tract of factory chickens means that we are conditioned, probably correctly, to err on the side of overdone. Most people don't carry a Thermapen in their pocket to verify done-ness.

We have quite a few more tonight Jasdip. Just the four of us, with DH supervising when we did the yearlings. Tonight we have around 80 head of cows to vaccinate, and then the same amount of calves to do. I figure we will have a group of about a dozen people. DH and BIL just brought the heifers and their calves in the corral. We will start rounding up the rest in about half an hour. Jeff, where were you when I was a girl guide? My favorite meal as a kid was beans and franks! LOL Sjerin, in about a week, when we ship most of the cattle to community pasture and summer grass, my work is done at home until we gather in the fall. I don't have to work, but if I didn't have a job for the summer, I would go nuts. One can only garden for so long, and then it would mean sitting around getting fat, and at my age, that is WAY to EASY to do. LOL

I guess it depends on which you care more for - your garden, or the rabbit? I personally would rather kill the rabbit than let it eat my crops. Think of it food-wise - would you want chard and rabbit, or no chard and no rabbit?

Then of course, as you suggested, you could trap it and let it go somewhere else. I don't usually feel that nice towards critters that eat my garden. I've killed a couple chipmunks this year and repelled the baby rabbit by putting cayenne powder on the leaves. >:) Yup that's how I do it.

I guess I've been lucky. The rabbit in my backyard has only been
eating selected weeds. Has not touched my green beans, squash
or tomatoes. Maybe because I have so many weeds in my garden.
I'm going to try really hard next summer to keep it under control.

I have a live rabbit trap. I am going to set it up and catch one, may be more depending how good they tast. There are a lot of them. Now they have their babies running around too. Luckily they have not caused whole lot of damage except eating kohlrabies, radishes and all of the lettuce seedlings (HAHA). Well, now that I know what they graze on, I am sure they will taste very good.
Tomorrow the trap will accept check ins, with a sign saying " "VACANCY". LOL.

Our town has no rabbit laws BUT you can't shoot a gun in city limits, not even a bb gun and in some places it's illegal to trap and release rabbits on someone else's property. Best rabbit repellent we've found is two noisy dogs who think they own the neighborhood. We used to fight rabbits constantly but since we have a pomeranian and an american eskimo the score is rabbits zilch dogs win. Zoie's favorite game is chase the rabbit, she runs them out of the yard so often they know when I open the door..here comes that dog again.

Speaking as someone who has more rabbits than people on his block I think the "cuteness" factor wears off pretty quickly.

I don't see a lot of difference between a rabbit and a squirrel except a rabbit isn't prone to jumping out of a garbage can with a 1/2 bag of chips in it's mouth.

I live in an urban environment, btw.

They're like cockroaches here. You couldn't kill or trap enough of them to impact the population unless you had a huge chunk of neighbors pitching in.

Kind of depends on just where "somewhere else" IS, doesn't it. Because if it's near my house I will shoot it as soon as it starts eating MY garden. Cute can only get you a short distance. Just Google "rabbits overrun island" for a very quick look at the dammage a rabbit population explosion do. And then think about the current explosion of Canada geese, starlings, woodchucks, white tail deer, chipmunks, feral cats, rats, mice, voles, gypsy moths, and on, and on, and on. I hate to point it out again, but our requirements have kind of messed up the balance of nature.

I am going to cook that rabbit!!!!!
