My Tipsy Pots are in Birds and Blooms magazine

It's the project of the month in the April/May 2009 issue. Not sure if you have to be signed up to see it on their website or not, but here is the link. I can post a PDF of the actual magazine page once the issue is no longer on news stands. There is more in the magazine than what is on the website. They also featured my chair planters in their newsletter a couple of weeks ago.

That's awesome!! I could see the first page with the tipsy pots without being a member. But then I clicked on the chair planter and I had to be a member to look at that one. The tipsy pots look very nice. I can't ever get mine to look that nice. Great accomplishment!! Congrats!!

Thanks Cindy,yes I love them :) Rose I think someone tells how to make them in a post on here,but I bought a piece of rebar at Lowes,it was about a dollar and 50 cents and maybe 4 feet tall,and I pounded it in the ground with a hammer. Then I slid the pots over the rebar one at a time,putting the potting soil in them one at a time also. The bottom pot I had to use a broken piece of cement to hold up the next to the bottom pot,but the others all sit on the edges of each other. I put the plants in as I went,too. Then I carefully watered them til the soil was all settled in each one. I do lose some soil the first few times I water them but then it levels out. I buy the pots at yard sales all year long. Last year I used an old floor lamp that had a slender center pole in it,that was wrought iron. It worked good. Some people used a shepherds hook. I saw a nice one at Dollar General that would work great that cost a few dollars,and you could hang a bird house on it above the tipsy pots. Hope that helps Rose!

Yeah, Maria, my Hubby just told me we are supposed to get snow sometime this week... That's what we get for living in Michigan! The Pansies and Primroses will be fine though. Snow may nip the blossoms, but the plants will survive. Yes, Kudzukween, I just used my Hubby's drill and one of his bigger bits to drill the pots. Made three holes close together in a triangle, then knocked out the connecting metal to make the big holes for the rebar. Just be sure to put the big holes off center if your pots have straight sides, to control the amount of tippage. On a couple of them, I put two tiny holes on the side near the rim, to thread wire through that I attached to the center pole. That helped to fix the pots at the angle I wanted. I've got one blue speckled enamel pot I found over the winter at GW that I hope to use in another tipsy pot, if I can find more pots I like.

Jan, I know exactly how it is. I've been meaning to do the tipsy pots for years and just got around to it this spring. Julia, The tipsy pots were a fun project. You'll enjoy it. blue23rose, I've never seen a kit...cool! berrytea, I made mine by threading the pots over a long metal rod that I pounded into the ground. Just need to make sure the metal rod will fit through the drainage hole of each pot. Linda, correct...no need to lift the amaryllis here. I'm waaay to lazy to bother! Don't be mistaken! I'm no authority on bop... But they are close relative of banana, canna, and ginger... I have 2 bop, one white tree bop and a dwarf...neither have been affected, nor the bananas either, but my cannas are eat up with rust! It starts as a few specks of orange...it looks dusty but if you rub it it you feel bumps on the leaves, within a week the lower leaves are fully inundated with it, they brown and wither away after another month or so...the new leaves are fine... I'm not sure exactly what it is! But it's a fungal infection! Spray only helps to hold it back, it's in the environment... I notice your in z6 like me, so it seems to me there's a pretty good chance that we are under attack from the same thing... Can you get a pic? It would be helpful...

Congratulations on being published! Those tipsy pots are truly worthy of a larger audience, and it would be a shame if they had not received widespread recognition. Nice article explaining how you did it, too!

I've seen them before doing "drive bys" of other peoples gardens & have wanted one for awhile. Your step by step instructions are great and I love the combinations of plants you used to fill them. Driving the rebar so deep to stabalize them makes great sense.
Hopefully someone will see one in my yard soon as they do a "drive by" .... let me call my sweetie in here... " Honey, come look " .... LOL

Thanks everybody! I remember when I first saw them in town and was so excited and then I came to this forum and discovered that some of you here had been doing them for ages....LOL.

Kathy - I don't really have problems with the soil running out, but I do line them with newspaper to help them from drying out so quickly. I water them slowly, starting from the top, so any run off just goes into the next pot. I don't overfill the soil and I mulch them, so when I do water, the soil does not run out either. When I water my containers, I usually water this one first, do the rest and then come back and do this one again. If they dry out too much, I take each pot down, water them well (sometimes soaking each pot in a tub of water) then re-stack them, but I only had to do that once when we were gone a couple of days.

Congratulations girl!!! Yep, I saw those in there since I subscribe and thought, Wow, these guys haven't been around much--they need to check out the Garden Junk website! And why should I have been so surprised to find out it was you-one of our very own Garden Junkers who did this beauty?! I've sent one or two little blurbs to them but never have been "published" :-)
Oh, on my tipsy pot (I need to revamp a couple of the pots plants) I put a drip line to each pot so I don't have to think about it every day. Since I live in the desert I didn't want to want to dehydrate any of my plants!

I have made two of the tipsy pots...didn't have good luck with the plants in either one of them...

Now that I think about it....I believe it was because I used too small pots. I think they didn't stay moist enough in the summer heat here in Iowa.

Maybe I'll try ....one more time and get larger pots.

Wow, How wonderful, I love that magazine. Really nice to be included in it, and what a nifty idea. I love the tipsy pots, so I just finished building mine. I think I went a little overboard, the only rebar I could find was 10 ft tall.. Now my Tipsy pots are 6 ft tall..lol I will need to add a couple of pots, or maybe a totem to the top.

I have been doing Tipsy Pots for 3 years now.I've worked at 2 major nurserys & can tell you a secret for success with Tipsy Pots.First soak each of your pots in water to get them hydrated before you start.Use a moisture retaining potting soil & you can use coffee filters with X's cut in them & plant your flowers through the x's,This will help keep the soil in place.Always put spagnum moss over your completed pots & water slowly,& most importantly,don't let them dry out.
