What the heck is with my weeping peach?

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can give me advice on what to do with this new weeping peach tree I planted this spring. I ordered it from an online garden shop. It has been in the ground approximately two and a half months. I know it is difficult to see in the picture because the reddish leaves blend in with my mulch. But, it has only sprouted at the bottom. I drew an arrow where the leaves stop. I was originally going to ask if I should just lob off the top. But, come to think of it, should there even BE growth on the bottom? Shouldn't that just be the trunk? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

This appears to be a case of failed graft, in which the growth comes from the rootstock, while the upper, grafted scion is dead. That is a very sad looking example of a nursery tree.

Would you mind telling us which online nursery this tree came from, and where it is located? Whatever this nursery is, it is one to be avoided. You should call or e-mail them and get a new tree at the very least. Your money back would be even better.

Such thing could come from the best nursery in the world. Contact them to change your tree or for a refund. I wouldn't dismiss any nursery simply because of some bad shipment. Only if reports are across the board that they're bad. But if they don't respond back, then surely they should be avoided next time.
Mislabeling, failed grafts, delayed shipments, itty bitty trees... They happen to anyone that are handled by humans.

Thanks Blaze for the kind words. Omni, A taller peach tree actually produces a slightly higher yield than an shorter peach tree. The reason for this is that more annual pruning of fruiting wood is required to keep a peach tree shorter. Most people forgo the slightly better production of taller peach trees in favor of the advantages of keeping them shorter (i.e. easier thinning, pruning and harvesting). Some people like to start their scaffolds higher (and consequently accept taller peach trees) in order to wrap the trunk with materials to keep wildlife from climbing the trunk and eating the fruit. You can start the scaffolds higher and still keep the tree at pedestrian height, but it takes a lot more pruning and you prune off a lot more fruiting wood than if the scaffolds are started down lower. I have one tree I started the scaffolds high and to keep it from growing out of reach I have to keep the canopy very thin. So thin, I've had problems with the scaffolds getting sunburned. Paul Friday, a well-known peach breeder has made the salient point that a peach tree canopy is only going to grow 6 feet of peaches, you might as well grow that 6' of canopy where you can reach it. Since your new, I'll offer a bit more explanation of that comment. Peach trees tend to shade out lower growth. A leaf canopy deeper than 6' will shade any growth below it, so that any growth that starts below the canopy will die. Paul Friday says the number is 6', but I've found even 4' of canopy depth is enough to shade out and kill growth below it. Either way, the point is that the canopy of your tree can be maintained at pedestrian height (0 thru 6 feet), or really high (10 thru 16 feet) the choice is yours. If you choose not the prune the tree, the tree will choose for you and it's choice will be to grow the canopy really high, since in nature the tall peach trees have a survival advantage (less deer browsing, less competition for sunlight, ect.) I wouldn't necessarily trust in the fact that it's a "dwarf" tree, unless I knew specifically it was a genetic dwarf, or knew what rootstock they put it on. Nurseries are notorious for labeling peach trees as dwarfs or semi-dwarfs, when in reality the rootstocks they are using have very little (if any) dwarfing effect.

I have been amazed here, 6 or 8 hundred miles to the north of CO, that the bugs have been fairly limited this year. There were exceptions. The flea beetles attacked the brassicas with real vengence, early on. I was unable to deal with their numbers and they made a mess of the radishes, especially. The red spider mites were slow in getting started in the dahlias. They are out there now and have begun to cause serious damage. I've started hosing down the plants with water before spraying them with insecticide. That has really helped in the past and I'm optimistic. (You need to wait for the plants (& mites) to dry before spraying.) The red spiders are also on the sunflowers and finishing off the 1st planting of beans. I think beans must be their favorite food. They always swarm the aging bean plants. Forever, I've heard people say that a cold Winter suppresses the bugs but we didn't have a cold Winter. Instead, we had a cold Spring. That may have done far more to suppress bugs than some additional days of subzero weather in January could have. digitS'

I will eat liver of almost any sort...but I would prefer not to be the one that cooks it. But that is as far as I will go with organ meats. But now that I have read the part about "the liver cleans everything in the system...I like to know what's coursed through my organ meat", I may never eat it again. And this statement also made me rethink how much I love Rocky Mountain Oysters. LOL I will not eat any wild game. I have tried many different game meats...deer, elk, raccoon, bear, possum, duck, rabbit, wild boar...the list goes on. I am just not crazy about that "wild" taste. And it doesn't matter if it's been soaked in milk or whatever else they try to de-wild it with. :) I will also not eat tripe or sea urchin (had one in our salt water aquarium and just can't feature that). *shudder* I won't touch tuna...from a can, raw or otherwise. Tuna from a can looks and smells just like cat food to me. And when we were little, my older sister was responsible for feeding us dinner. She made tuna noodle casserole over and over and over. She was 10 and no one taught her (or any of us) to cook, so she is forgiven. We were even known to have saltine crackers crushed up in a bowl with Kool Aid on them. And most other fish is not appealing to me. Shellfish, however, is another matter. And milk. I will not drink milk. I read once that humans are the only mammal on Earth that drinks milk past the weaning stage. Milk is the one thing that will make me gag should I consider raising a glass to my lips. And watching someone else drink it? Ewwww SHUDDER. However, I will cook with it. Weird...I know. Other than that, I will eat just about anything and will at least try just about anything...once. I am sure I will think of something later that I won't eat. And we were raised by a step dad that forced us to eat everything on our plates. Everything. I never, ever made my kids eat something they didn't want to...and they are great eaters now.

You do need to see your dr. Not being one myself, my opinion (which counts for nothing, really) is that looks like the hives I got once. My reaction was to a med I'd taken in the past without problem--either they changed something in the formula, or I developed yet another allergy. It can take 2 weeks, I learned for an allergy to a med to show up, in some cases. Along with some heavy duty steroids, my dr. recommended oatmeal baths. You don't need to spring for the expensive 'colloidal oatmeal' preparations like Aveno. All Colloidal means is 'dissolvable'. You can take regular oatmeal, and pulse it in your blender or food processor until it's a fine powder and use that--for a small fraction of the cost of 'medicinal' oatmeal. And it really does help. I'd give your dr. a call, and tell him it's imperative that you see him today--you can't put up with that. Feel better.

Dig it out and check the roots also. There is nothing to lose at this point, only something to learn. the roots could have been damaged too, gophers, nematodes, moles, other critters...

I don't quite agree there Joe. None of the nurseries I deal with would send out a tree like the one in the photo. It's not really a tree at all.

Don, obviously, there is no nursery that would send out a tree looking like that in the photo, who would accept such a thing looking like that? I have assumed it was obtained bare-rooted and it initially grew and then died out later. If you dig out the records of nurseries, none are perfect, but no one would send out a tree looking like that in the photo, but who would have known it would end up like that when it was sent out bare-rooted. So you may be rushing out into concluding that you don't agree with me. Cheers!

Our local nurseries here have a lifetime guarantee because sometimes things like that happen. It could be mishandled during shipment by disgruntled lowest paid employees, repotted improperly, etc, aside from simple failed graft. Soemtimes grafted to wrong rootstocks also (I've caught one popular nursery done that with persimmons). Home Depot has one year guarantee, some of OSH outlets here have lifetime guarantee that trees would grow in our area. Things of bad trees like these are common, but depends on your definition of common. Out of several hundred trees, I have returned or exchanged a couple with no questions asked. If the nurseries won't bother to talk to you after telling them about the problem, then that is a sure sign of a bad nursery.

Thanks for the information. That makes sense. I was going to put in the name of the nursery originally, but I couldn't remember if it was Springhill or Michigan Bulb. I believe it was the latter. I actually had good luck with both of them this year (except for this tree) and I know they will replace it if they are not sold out.

So, what will happen if I just let this 'tree' grow? Will there just be foliage? I don't want to throw it away. Thanks again!

Peach scions are normally grafted to a species of plum rootstock, and if you allow it to grow it will end up as a type of plum bush, usually with poor plums or none at all. If this is what you want, then leave it. I wouldn't.

Michigan Bulb Co. is part of a group of 3rd rate mailorder nurseries that sell cheaply, but you get what you pay for. These outfits are not really nurseries at all, but warehouse clearinghouses that buy stock from various sources, then resell it. They send out a lot of flyers with one-cent and half price sales, and that is the tipoff. For example, compare a few gladiolus bulbs from Michigan Bulb with those you can buy in spring at Costo Warehouses. Costo bulbs are about 4 times larger. That's where I buy my bulbs.

Stark Brothers Nursery also carries the weeping peach you purchased, and I am betting that they would send you a much healthier specimen, although at a somewhat higher price. Time and effort are factors that are at least as important as price. You have obviously put some effort into planting your little weeping peach, and you have been let down. Stark Brothers Nursery has lately gone though a corporate reorganization, but nurseries like Stark at least obtain their stock from contract growers where they have some control over quality.

I checked the Michigan Bulb site, and they are indeed sold out of your Pink Cloud peach.
