I drilled a hole in mine first and made a fountain. It won't be shiny long, pennies dull fast. I can't really tell in the picture did you make two layers? We did then covered the spaces between pennies the second layer. I love mine, it is four years old now and going strong. We lose a few pennies if I run vinegar in the fountain to clean it out. I have it in a large terra-cotta bowl. I love it!

Hi, let me introduce myself, my name is Wendy and you can usually find me over in hypertufa forms, but often lurk here as love to see and read all about your project. Now I have a question to ask on these penny balls; is there any kind of sequence that you glue your pennies on?, I'm not planning to layer them and don't want to end up with a lot of extra spaces at the end of the project so would really appreciate any kind of guidance you can give. I only have the one BB that I had to beg for and don't want it to end up a total disaster!

Did I see a dime in there?? hehe!! I made one last year for my husband. But I wanted mine with a patina on it,so I used vinegar and salt and poured it on and left it. It's really cool looking this year. Here's a pic from last year.

Elephantear, to answer your question, mine was made fron a old cardboard world globe I had around,so I just started with the center seam, working my way around, and started the next row above and then below that one. When you get to the end of a row, sometimes you have to adjust the pennys, but the caulk is still workable so just work back sliding the pennys and leave little gaps between them. It's easy and I know you can do it! Kudzukween, Yea, one dime but I did hide several Canadian pennys in there too! Glad you liked it!!! Gary

Thanks maz436, Didn't think I was going to get an answer here so you amy have noticed I went 'solo' with another thread. I'll give my PBB a whirl (no pun intended) in the next few days. I also really like the leaf side of those Canadian pennies, but tried soaking those in copper cleaner with my USA ones and got a very dull finish-no shine left? I noticed the dime there also! good for you-makes for a fun conversation piece lol -Wendy

Nice penny ball. I did one a couple of summers ago with new pennies. It was bright and shiny for about a year but its pretty dull now. I actually like the look of it now too.
What I do with the BBs is set them in a bowl with the finger holes down in the bowl. I start at the top of the ball gluing pennies or marbles and just keep working my way down towards the bowl and the finger holes. I finish off around the finger holes as best as I can. The finger hole ares is usually going to be facing down in a pot, etc. and not showing so any uneven placement of pennies or marbles is not going to show. Some people fill the finger holes with putty and place marbles right over top of them but I don't.

ketchup really cleans and shines anything copper into a beautiful pink copper. Just spread the ketchup on , let it set a bit , then I would use a fine steel wool. I do that to the bottoms of my copper clad pots and pans...they look brand new.
