Fuzzy kiwi pollinate hardy kiwi

I read previous posts on kiwis and the information was not clear whether fuzzy kiwi males can pollinate hardy kiwi female. I have a friend who has a fuzzy kiwi male that blooms at the same time as a my issai hardy kiwi. I'm wondering if I can use some pollen from his flowers to pollinate my kiwi.

I have a couple hybrid arguta/delisiosa vines ... a ken's red(f)/Chico_Hayward(m) and cordifolia(f)/Chico_Hayward(m) that were grown from seed. So it is possible if you have pollen.

It depends on which male is used. I'm not sure which male EL sells, but they state that it will not pollinate the hardy females, so that means it probably does not work in their location. Bloom periods will vary in different locations, so it could work in some places, and not in others. Since you are also in VA, it may be risky to try Anna with only the fuzzy male. ~kiwinut

No. It makes me wonder if you don't want to order from someplace else given their complete ignorance. Your silver vine will not pollinate your arguta kiwis as the polygama blooms several weeks before argutas. Even if you saved pollen and hand pollinated I believe chances of setting fruit would be marginal to nil but heck it would be worth a try. You could use male arguta pollen to pollinate kolomikta and polygama females If you were breeding hybrids but not so much the other way around. Same as fuzzy kiwi males can pollinate arguta females but not the other way around. It has something to do with smaller or shorter sperm of the smaller species which cannot reach where it needs to go in the larger species. I tried a few years ago to pollinate female argutas with kolomikta pollen with no luck. I plan on keeping a female kolomikta in the fridge and bring her out during arguta bloom period and see how that goes. It will be a good experiment for you though,simply cut off a few silvervine branches and put them in some water in the coldest part of your fridge then pull them out when the time is right. The green Zespri brand kiwis are small like the first kiwis I saw in the grocery stores many years ago. I bought some very large green kiwis a few months ago, and they almost looked like two fruits fused together. The cashier told me she used to enjoy kiwis, but said she didn't like them anymore. The flavor of the large fruit was bland, and I remembered why I stopped buying them. When I saw the Zespri brand green kiwi, I decided to see if they were as good as the golden kiwis. They were not, but still alot better than the other green kiwis. So that is what had me suspecting there was more than one clone used other than Hayward. Is the ZespriGold a single clone grown only by Zespri growers? It will be a while before my gold seeds grow into fruiting plants, so if anyone knows where mature plant material can be found for sale or trade, I'd love to get a a pair. I was told the main problem is the fuzzies usually bloom too much earlier than hardies. So, they will pollinate IF they overlap. One year my hardy male did not bloom and I still got kiwis so I expect one of my fuzzy males did the job.

I agree Scott. I can't imagine a fuzzy blooming that late.. I have a male chenensis in my greenhouse that finished blooming 2 or 3 weeks ago... my argutas are at least a week or 2 yet from blooming.
I've saved fuzzy pollen in the freezer though with success using it later. Tyler

So I can save male pollen for later use on female? How do you store them?

I collect the male flowers... cut off the stamens that have the pollen attached onto a piece of paper. I fold up the paper like an envelope and tape it shut, label it, and put it in the freezer. When you are wanting to use it.... take it out of the freezer and let it sit for awhile before using a qtip or kids paint brush to apply the pollen onto the female flowers.

Wait, do you put it in the freezing section of the freezer or the part where you put your fruits in?

Yes... freezer... not refrigerator.
