Apples used to make Martinelli's sweet apple juice?

I have tried a variety of 100% bottled/canned apple juices over the years and nothing comes close to the fresh sweet taste of Martinelli's apple juice or apple cider (unfilter apple juice). They state on the label they do not use any type of sweetner. Any idea what apples/blend they use?

Newtown Pippin is a significant component; it also tastes like there is Gravenstein in there to me. I think the Newtown and other high quality juice apples is what makes their juice exceptional.

Santa Cruz is one of the few places where Newtown is still an important commercial apple. When I was a kid growing up in Southern CA, Alpha Beta supermarket advertised it as "the ugly apple that tastes good". It was my favorite apple for its tart-sweet crunch. Still love those dense fleshed apples.

Martinelli's is probably the main reason it continues to be grown there. It's nice that a company would be so dedicated to the quality of their product instead of seeking the lowest production cost possible. That concentrated Chinese juice taste like it's mostly Red Delicious- yuk. Good for trapping yellow jackets though.

Cheryl - I suppose you could drain it, at least part of it. Keep in mind the canned apples are cooked now so they won't contain anywhere near the moisture the moisture a fresh apple sliced for a pie would. All the liquid is now in the canning liquid so you'd want some of it at least I think. We like all the goo so when we open the jars wife dumps them into a pan re-heats it all and stirs in the cornstarch or tapioca we prefer for thickening then into the pie shell for baking. It looks just like the canned apple pie filling you would buy only tastes better. Dave

He is not brittle. In fact he has excellent control, primarily through diet, and I give him his carb allowance, just like I'd give a kid his money allowance, and let him decide where to spend them to suit his fancy. He usually prefers to do fresh fruit instead, but also will do most fruits I can with water or occasionally splenda. Yes, he does peanut butter often but mostly on some apple slices. We are thrilled that it's been so easy and he seems to have no problem with cutting out the sweet stuff entirely. I cook almost entirely from scratch, and love to bake and that was what led him into temptation in the first place with an otherwise good, healthy diet. I'm an ex-nurse and we turned the diet thing into a fine-tuned program and are not having a problem with having to revert to 'special' foods. But thanks for suggestions. I share what works for us too.

If you're planning on giving it to baby I'd stick to store bought b/c it's pasteruized. Dirty apples that have come into contact with animals feces when they've dropped on the ground could be potentially deadly to your baby. Only pasteurized beverages, i.e. milk & juice should be used.

Much obliged for the helpful hints to you all. I may need to go back up to Julian to get more apples. The last box - 3/4 full cost me $30. So I'm hopeful that my own little apple "orchard" will start producing soon. Some of the apple picking places are almost as expensive as "DisneyLand." Anyway, I am now on my latest batch of Skeeters Pee. This is almost 2-3 weeks down the line from first prep, and only yesterday did it start to perk. It has been extremely cold for Oct., and was slow to get a heat source to it. I now have a grow lamp near the bucket, and wrapped a flour sack or 2 around the entire scene. When I checked it late yesterday, it looked "bubbly" - so I hurriedly put on the cover and air-lock. Since then it has bubbled - like put, put, put, put, etc., and this early morn - it is put,put, put -- put, put, put, etc. In summary then, I have either a re-start ferment - or - it is about to go to lime juice heaven - i.e. down the drain. So much fun. By the way, my last Skeeter's Pee was a bit bitter near the end. Why was that - could be too much added flavors - tartar or ? How about remaining seeds in the mash - would they affect taste? So many questions, so little time. Bejay

When I lived in Watsonville, Martinelli's original apple processing plant was across the the street. They pay a premium for their apples, buying the whole crop, not the seconds, or windfalls. Many of the old Newtown Pippin orchards in the Watsonville, Aptos area have been removed in favor of truck crops with better returns. Martinelli's nowadays buys apples where ever they can get the varieties they want. Up here in Sonoma county one of the local apple farmers told me Martinelli's buying their apples is all that is keeping them afloat, as their willingness to pay premium prices keeps the prices up. Al

At the Nafex, Rare Fruit Growers meeting in Santa Cruz a grower gave a talk who still grows them in the Santa Cruz for Martinelli. That was about 4 years ago, I think.
