Blueberry leaf problems ( Maybe?)

Hi all,

I got my blueberry bushes in this year ( second attempt) this year they seem to be going ok in general. They are growing which is more than what happened last year!!.. :)

I have 4 plants - Elizabeth, Duke. Earlyblue and jersey

On all the plants i am seeing some leafs going brown, and some leaf's looking like they are being munched on. I have attached some pic's. Any help would be appreciated.

I did Pick up a Bonide 3 in 1 and have sprayed them over past few days. Does not seem to be helping tho

Doesn't look like disease. More like wet, cool, and just getting established. They also look nitrogen deficient but could just be above. After they get established a bit you might try adding small frequent additions of nitrogen. In NY you probably don't need lower pH so something like Urea or cottonseed meal would be a good nitrogen source. If you do need to lower pH then ammonium sulfate, 21-0-0, is a good choice. Both urea and 21-0-0 are best dissolved in water at about one tablespoon per 2-5 gallons water and poured around the plant.

Hi Folks again. So Over the summer, 2 of my plants did well. I is doing ok. and one is in trouble. PH seems to be ok.. its around 4 from a soil sample on the top. I am confused. Attached are 2 photos. I is the plant in trouble. One is one of the plants thats doing ok. they are 3 feet apart and have been fertilised with cottonseed meal, and have added epsoma acidifer granules. they were both planted with spagnum.

Need advice - do not want to lose this plant. Its a DUKE

Hi Al, I feel like I should have paid better attention in science class here! Here we go: - Vigoro Citrus fertilizer: 12-5-8, continuous feeding for 3 months. Water soluble Mg 1%. Combined sulfur 8.5%. There appears to be no Ca. This was used when potting up the Misty (curled leaf), and afterwards on top of the already potted Sunshine Blue (slimy flower). - Espoma Soil Acidifier: 30% sulfur, consisting of 18% free sulfur and 12% combined sulfur. derived from elemental sulfur and gypsum. This was used when potting up the Misty with the curled leaf, and afterwards on top of the already potted Sunshine Blue with the slimy flower. This came in tiny little round balls, and when i put it on the dirt and water it, the next day the balls disappear. Does that mean it is soluble and effective? What do you think is causing the slimy flowers? The Ca deficiency you're talking about, is that for the curled leaves? Thanks! Jenny

Bamboo: You understood correct, I was thinking of removing the affected branches, which weren't that many anyway, but I won't do it. Will probably just remove the bad leaves and prune appropriately. Fruitnut: I saw the recent discussion about the lower application rates for AS, but I was having good results (until possibly now,) with the old rates. Will definitely have to rethink how much AS I'm going to give them. I do apply it preceded with plain water. Update: Another bush, our Farthing is also showing signs of the same thing, so I flushed that container also. Something else that might be at play is the weather in that it was warm and rainy and now is sunny, and hot 90+. Maybe some sun damage?? Today when I was researching blueberry diseases I saw the red ringspot virus. The pictures are exactly what I have on some of my bushes and I think almost everybody gets the stuff from time to time and I've seen lots of posts from people asking what the red spots are. No cure for the redspot virus except removal of the leaves.

The brown edges indicate the plants are short of water. (The spots may be disease -- perhaps someone else who knows about that will comment.) Blueberry roots are very shallow. You need to apply mulch several inches thick to help slow evaporative loss of the water/rain which is applied. And you need to get rid of the weedy competition.

How strange but good to know. My Anna did not react to lots of rain during an El Nin~o Year that way so maybe it is a problem with Ruby only. And you did say it had rained a lot recently by KY. Question: did Heidi say that it also could be because of too much nitrogen??? Do you know what is the logic there??? Meaning how that could trigger this type growth? Odd.

Just curious. Are you watering too much? The ground looks soaked.

I actually shut off the soaker hose today also thinking that that may be an issue with all the recent rain. there is good drainage. I also watered the all the plants with a mix of aple cider vinigear - 1/3 cup in 2 quarts of water today so that may be why it appeared to be over wet...

That sounds like a lot of vinegar. I have 2 container blueberries, growing well, and my tap water is about 8. I add 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) of vinegar per gallon of water, which brings the pH of the water down to about 4. 1/3 of a cup of vinegar per 2 quarts of water would be more than 5 ounces of vinegar per gallon of water.

brady - thats a good question. I need to pick up another test kit. I will be back.

In ref to the vinegar - I found a blog posting online.. not sure how valid.. but recommeneded a 1 cup to a gallon...

1 cup per gallon? Yikes! Maybe it's me that's crazy, but that sounds like WAY too much. Just my worthless opinion.
