Should I attempt to replant an Avocado tree?

Hi All,

About 1 year ago, I planted a dwarf Avocado tree in my backyard. Or rather, I had some gardeners plant it and I suspect that they did not amend the soil AT ALL and probably only dug the hole for the size of the pot. My backyard is very very hard clay soil (almost like brick in some areas).

One year later, the tree hasnt died but it has put on very little visible new growth. There are new leaves on it and such but the tree isn't any taller.

That said, should I attempt to dig it up and replant it and properly and thoroughly amend the soil? My only concern is that since it is in the ground possibly the plant has just been putting out it's roots despite the soil condition and I don't want to do much harm than good by having to damage the roots.

Thoughts?

Laurence
