This is my first attempt at a photo post. I hope this works!!

Look at what I found in my neighbor's trash! Isn't the weather vane great? I was so excited to share this with you!

The weather vane is very heavy, although the horse on the top is made out of tin. This is NOT something you would typically find in a Southern California trash can. I am not sure if it is a true weather vane that somebody mounted on the stand or if it was just made that way. I still can't believe I found it! I am sorry you had to pay for yours!

Don't feel embarassed! I'm new to GardenWeb, but not quite as new to gardening as you are. I wish I found this years ago, because gardeners are such gosh-darn nice people, it seems. I live in a totally different climate over here in frigid New Hampshire, but I spent 6 years in Oakland, CA, so I know a little bit about California climates. That's when I was a novice gardener, too. The Sunset magazine gardening books are a must - they'll teach you so much. I got so attached to mine, it's still on my gardening shelf, much to my NH friends' amusement. The "Western Garden Book" is the basic bible. I don't know if there's one about veggies, but if there is, I'm sure it's fantastic. Another book that might be helpful is the "Square Foot Garden," which is about squishing as much as reasonably possible into small gardens. It'll help you get the spacing right on your pots & raised beds. The Rosemary will get there. My husband and I still talk longingly about the rosemary in our front yard in the last house we lived in in Oakland. It was 4 1/2 ft tall & slightly more wide. Gorgeous, too. Rosemary won't over-winter in NH, though I did find a variety this year that might (Arp), and ordered two. Things grown in good soil will perform better - you'll get more of a crop. But perennials won't necessarily die if the soil is poor, and they often produce something even if it's not a lot. You definitely can work in lots of stuff on top and build the soil like that. Anything organic works - manure, leaves (guess you don't get huge amounts of deciduous leaves though, duh), etc. The worms & soil bacteria take over from there, and over time, you end up with good soil. In your climate, it could actually be pretty quick - I count on a couple years to get a new bed well established, but that's because everything sleeps several months a year, then takes a while to wake up, work for a few months, then starts to wind down. The soil bacteria in your soil should make fast work of things! Also don't discount your soil totally - you never know. Only a soil test can tell you how it's doing in terms of nutrients. You can send your soil out to get tested - most folks use the local Cooperative Extension (found in all states - just google it). Or, for a less expensive and not nearly as comprehensive a test, get a soil test kit from a local nursery. Even the big box stores have them. It's not hard, and so helpful. Good luck & enjoy!

I know it takes a little while for it to start really cooking and that once it does, if I add anything to it, I'm starting all over again, right? Because you won't be able to turn the pile, just fill the bin as you get materials ... keep topping it off with grass clippings, dead leaves and such, keeping a reasonable balance of "wet green" versus "dry un-green" stuff. End with a layer of dried leaves and pack them down in the fall. Let it sit until when you look about 6-8 inches down it's looking like dark crumbly stuff. If you aren't turning it and watering it, it takes longer to compost but it still gets there. By next spring you should have the center core of that bin as a nice finished compost. Thanks for the comments, I appreciate them. Judy, I had just rearranged all of those plants before I found the rock, so I'm glad you like the arrangement. I had let that corner get horribly overgrown with too many penstemons, hollyhocks, and there were tons of leaves and blooms from the oleanders nearby. I like the cleaner look now. The cardon has been in that spot for three years and has grown a lot. The cactus at the left came with this house and I've moved the poor thing several times, LOL. The other plants have been in the ground for a few years too but were recently relocated the the spots in the pic. Psuperb, thanks for the nice comments. When I started working the rock I was worried too that it would be too big to handle. I'm not sure WHAT I would have done had that been the case. Like you mentioned, I was already worrying about replacing the volume of soil that would be vacated by the rock removal. No small feat for a big rock. It sounds like you picked your battle wisely and cut your losses and still found a nice way for your plant to grow. I can totally understand the approach. Thank you all for the lovely comments! I really enjoy "raising" this garden. Even though we have been in this house for a while, I have "rolled up my sleeves" two years ago. Treelover, the groundcover between the patio stones are some of my many experiments. First photo - blue star creeper and creeping thyme. Third photo - corsican mint, one of my favorite. It's a very low growing, spreads rapidly. Last photo - miniature mondo grass, not a best choice. I will replant it some place else, and replace with...whatever I can find on sale that spreads nicely, stays green in winter, and low-growing/steppable kind. Will post more pictures later, since now I know how. Yay! ~Natalie

I am not as creative as the rest of this group. I usually buy garden art and then just place it in the garden. However, I have become so inspired by everything I have seen here...so I am thinking of replacing the horse with just the right "thing". I guess I will know it when I see it!!!

Oh Wow, that is so beautiful. Me too, I can't believe they threw that away - AND - I can't believe you'd replace the horse with something else. It's perfect just as it is, leave it alone. If you need an idea to mount it on something so it's high off the ground - try using a bedpost spindle or a decking spindle you can get at Home Depot or Lowe's. Use a really good glue to put it on the spindle. And/Or - what a great topper for a garden totem, of course, not a glass bottom but maybe you can come up with some ideas for a bottom support.

OK, I will rethink replacing the horse. I like the idea about mounting it higher. I usually place my garden art early in the spring, and as the flowers and plants start growing they seem to engulf the art and they get "lost". Placing things on spindles makes great sense. I am learning SOOOO much!

Sewigardnut - the pail is tin and hand painted. It has a lot of potential.

When I got home from work last night, I noticed an old wooden screen door in this same neighbor's trash. I literally jogged over in my work clothes and snagged it. I have another neighbor who is a junker and I knew I had to get to it, before her!!

Do you know what you are going to do with your screen door yet? I got one out of my neighbors junk heap a few months back. Thinking of painting something on the screen. Will have to wait until it gets a little warmer before I can work on it. For now it's in my garage and I see it everytime I go somewhere and still get a little thrill that I found it. Unreal what people toss but so fantastic you were there to scoop up those amazing finds up! It would have been terrible if the 'garbage-man' had just chucked them in the truck and they got crushed/destroyed. We GJers are the best conservationists!! ;- ) You've done great!
I'm glad to read you won't take the weathervane apart - that would be a shame as it is perfect just as it is. And I have a thought about it 'getting lost' once the shrubs around it grow. I have a few glass totems around and at first glance around the garden you don't see them. But I know for myself that when I go to see other people's garden I take my time when I look around. Well, yesterday I took my time looking around my garden (was actually looking for weeds that are growing through the bushes) and I notices a shimmery reflection then saw a totem. I couldn't help but smile. I'm now rethinking how items are placed in the bed - some things, sure, give 'em front row exposure, but it's a bit more exciting to 'discover hidden treasures'.

Anj - I am thinking about hanging an old mail box or basket on the screen door and then planting some bright flowers. Just an idea...need to find the mailbox first! I will post before and afters...

Cait - I completely appreciate what you are saying about nesting things in the garden, so they can be "discovered". It makes it more of an adventure!

Kelly that weathervane is just wonderful. PLEASE don't remove that horse!!!! Sounds like you live next door to a great neighbor , wish mine threw out stuff like that.

Hi Kelly,

I had to check your post again to see if you'd changed your mind about the horse and glad to read you'll rethink about it. See, other's agree, leave it on, it's beautiful. Looking at the pic again, the horse is "just brown." May I suggest, to spark it up a bit, get some of that "hammered copper" spray paint I've recently read on the forums that some of the gals are using. It'll brighten the horse up, and, you can re-spray paint the bottom glossy black or a matte black, it make it all look new again! Please post another pic when you've placed it in your garden, you know we love pics.

OK...bottom line...I PROMISE I will not remove the horse. However, I may spruce it up using Sal's suggestion of copper spray paint. How I wish I didn't have to work...so many ideas...so little time. :)
