Sophie, there's a post called 'Anybody on here from say 10 years ago' if you scroll down. I was the last to comment on it. Nonacook, Bright199, seamommy, jeaninwa, gram_bh, beachplant were heard from. I'm know I left off some familiar members. .

Some others who were here are on Facebook or still blogging. It's about time to drag out some junk and go outdoors. I want to make hypertufa containers.

Y'all don't miss the 5" ceramic cache pots at $Tree. I bought yellow and green last year and wished I had more. They brought them back.

These pots do not have a hole in the bottom for drainage. I pot everything in those little plastic pots that are 6/$1 using them as a liner. When I water, I remove the inner pot and let it drain before replacing. A handful of pebbles in the bottom of the outer pot brings the inner pot even with the rim and helps drainage, too.

The smaller 10/$1 plastic pots are handy for rooting things or starting one big seed like Pride of Barbados or Castor Bean. If I'm doing plants with shallow roots, I recycle yogurt containers.

Did you harden off the plants by gradually exposing them to outside conditions? If they went from being inside next to a sunny window to straight into containers outside, it could be sun burn or wind burn. Cucumbers and zucchini don't like their roots disturbed so most people direct seed them into their permanent growing space. They grow so fast from seed, you don't really gain much by starting them inside. And you risk setting them back with transplant shock.

I admit to having cheated a little (ok, a lot) by planting food crops in and amongst most of my ornamentals so that I could water them all at the same time. Almost every pot with a flowering bush or bulb in it also contains a tomato, pepper, herb or onion plant, and earlier in the season I had lettuce growing in every bare spot I could find. I highly recommend this technique not just so that you can cheat on watering, but because it's great to grow your own food and many food plants look beautiful. There are a few things, however, in my yard and in our community garden that have never received a drop of supplemental water this year and still look fine. Off the top of my head, I can name these things: lady banks roses (I'm convinced you couldn't kill these, once mature, with any kind of neglect or abuse) climbing hydrangea (mine isn't old enough to bloom yet but it is growing fine and not drying out at all as far as I can tell, seems to still be spreading) gardenia (planted in an extremely dry spot under a large tree where I doubt it even gets much rainfall when we have rain, but has at least a foot deep mulch, mostly leaf mold, all around it) passionflowers (I have two kinds, the one with the startlingly beautiful purple flowers, and the one that makes the egg-shaped purple fruit but has only tiny insignificant white flowers that you have to search for if you want to see. Both are doing very, very well.) lilies of many varieties, although I tend to plant the tall ones (4-6 feet tall) creeping fig (another plant you can't kill once it gets past a certain age) naked ladies or lycoris squamigera, blooming their lovely pink heads off right now (transplants from Ohio that took 2 or 3 years after moving down here to decide to bloom, but are now apparently completely acclimated) verbena bonariensis, not only blooming without water but reseeding and growing new plants everywhere without water, which also grow to maturity and somehow bloom and reseed without any water, and so on into infinity. . . kudzu and poison ivy, about which no more need be said.

Country Sampler and Country Marketplace were my two favorites. I did country things. I sewed, and stuffed and painted. I don't have a lot of thing left because I have a problem of giving my things away when a birthday or something comes up. I designed a muslin doll with hi heel shoes that were a part of the body. I then painted the muslin. Painted an old lady face and dressed her like a bag lady. Some of them had two different shoes painted on because that was all she could find in the dumpster. But they had class...Black velvet hats with a rose on it. A once beautiful sweater with a few holes in it. Nice warm wool plaid skirts, so what if the moths were a little hungry. They each had a bag full of goodies they had rummaged. I think they were my favorite things I've made. Sure wish I would have kept one. They sold like hotcakes. I made lots and lots of snowmen. Crafted some out of old quilts, some out of chenille,Many out of muslin and then I painted them. I've painted lots and lots of santa's and snowmen on old pieces of overly weathered wood. I had a pile of old wooden palets out back that were falling apart. That is where I got a lot of my santas. Fence boards with snowmen painted on them. I still have two or three of them. And I still have a santa painted on an old ironing board. I also painted country snow scenes on big old coat button and made them into pins. I was thinking about painting little ghost trick or treaters on some buttons for little gifts for some friends this year. But haven't gotten it done...maybe next year. Oh and screens...I painted snowmen on screens. Did lots of wooden signs. Way back when nylon sculpture was big I made old lady heads. I live in Iowa and one of them was bought for a gift for some lady who owned one of the big newspapers in D.C. I always wondered if she liked it or not. I made long eared bunnies before anyone knew what they were. People were always asking...what's this a pregnant kangaroo?....(mine had chubby bellies) I have somewhere a picture of me and a bunch of the heads. I'll have to see if I can find it and scan it to post. I'm one of these who stores all her pictures in boxes...I hate scrapbooking...lol The cradle is cute. And so is the baby in it. I've only made one of those. not a cradle but a bed. For my grandaughter. I think she still has it and she is 14 now. patti

BB Lover - I checked my BB notes for this date in 2017 - and apparently the one bird was not dead, as my notes said all fledged. You will know if one is dead when you check the box, as there will be a bad odor, especially when it is hot weather. I believe you would then have to remove it but then it would depend on how many days old they were as parents could remove a smaller bird easily but you don't want to make others fledge early . A dead bird in a box with healthy other birds will draw ants and other predators which would not be good. We need to use common sense and not "over protect" them, but we really do have a responsibility to help when we invite them into our yard with a nestbox!

Thanks, FE! I was just telling DH we need to make some tufa stuff. I am so ready for winter to be over once and for all. Yesterday and today, temps have been nice, but dare I believe the arcticness won't return? :p

i dont rember names from then, but 10 yrs ago i was a member, then lost touch for years, and i am finally able to garden again. this is the first place i looked up. i rember old projects that were going on back then, it was so fun.

I remember you often and think of all the 'good stuff' you had before you moved. I have been really busy lately and have not posted as much as I used to. Please,please come back and tell us what you are making and doing now

Nona, I don't get out curb shopping nearly as much as I did back then. Sure miss my truck. And I still kick myself over that pink piano I had to pass up.

BTW, I was spring cleaning and came upon the junk train notebook I was supposed to send you. Never trust a man to run your errands. ;)

With mom's passing it's been hard to get motivated. And we are renting now but I have been buying parts to make some plate flowers. Just doing a search to see if everyone is still using GE Silicone ll. Like those pots.

I love Dollar tree, stopped this week and picked up 14 pairs of flip-flops to make door wreaths for our community garden plant swap. 7 pairs per wreath. I tried them without a back but they are too floppy so gluing them on straw wreaths salvaged from the resale shop trash pile.

I've been on here several years, but not as long as ten. I lurk more than I post. Don't know why. I come here almost every day to see what's going on. I've been very busy making and selling garden art flowers, solar lights and other garden items. Also have had 3 surgeries in the last year so that has taken a toll on my energy.

I think I started coming in to GWGJ about 2000 when I got my first computer. I am sure I had a different name. Lost my password and had to change. Might have been Tucker. I do not remember. I remember Jean in Wa and Wonder where Wendy is Do you all remember the Blue Moon night we all did some thing special and had an online party? I think it was 2004 or 2005. I had so many picture of stuff we all did back then but lost most in a computer crash. I have learned to back up.

Wendy is still in the PNW, precious as ever. Every full moon I think about the Blue Moon party.

Every now and then I run across a picture from the mid-2000s someplace that I seldom go any more. I don't know why I didn't save more or at least save them where I could find them again.

The server where I put everybody's recipes finally dropped me off. I salvaged some of it, including one of Wendy's recipes.

Hiya! I was here years ago, had so much fun and inspiration with everyone ;) I'm happy to say that GE SILICONE 2 is the BEST! Every bit of stuff I glued with it out in the yard is still there (more than 10 years!!).... most of the metal, wood (like chairs) are gone. I popped in because I have a bare spot and needed inspiration. It's so cool to see this post right up front! ~~~~waves~~~~~
