what to do with cement stepping stones

I have several of the fake brick cement stepping stones (about 16" square...look like 8 bricks in a criss cross pattern, but it's all grey cement). They were a patio for the previous homeowner, but we've built a deck.

I'd like to reuse them, but don't like the plain look of grey cement. I was thinking of using them as stepping stones through my garden beside the house. The house is basic beige tones with touches of rock for interest (not sure what kind but it's all earthy brown tones), non-painted wood picket fence around the area.

Any suggestions on things I could do to spruce them up? Any feedback on things you may have already done. I'm considering painting, or maybe mosaics, but not sure of the hows and drawbracks of either.

The two ideas I had were exactly what you came up with. Search this site for "painted rocks." You could also do something like the plates someone linked.

Mosaic sounds wonderful. YOu could use bits of china and glass. Or you could use rocks and pebbles. Just buy a bag of thin set morter at lowes or home depot... mix it with water to the consistancy of peanut butter. You can spread the mortor over the stepping stone and press the pieces in or apply the morter to the back of each piece and put in place. Then grout and seal and there you go!!! Oh yea and take lots of pictures!!

I've been on several pathways that have clearly been some sort of stabilized agg product. They're sold as soil stabilizers (type that into google and settle in), but the principle is the same. I haven't used them myself, don't know how they're affected by climate (the website below is for a mfr in Phoenix), and don't know how well the product works as a "retrofit"- but it *could* work. These are not stepping stones but close. I did mosaic on mirror then added it to the stair risers. I need one more for the three step one and one for my side door and another for the back door. I will be busy working on these for awhile. Mostly made of scrap bits all done on slabs of mirror. With glass glob edging. One big thing to keep in mind on actual mosaic stepping stones you intend to walk on is to leave enough cement between the bits of glass to break up the super slick surface of the glass. I try to leave 1/4 inch or so. I rarely do actual stepping stones. Mostly decorative to look at not walk on. Now I need to get back to a very scary project. I am trying to put a roof up made of an old farm gate with the tin already on it and it is heavy as can be and I need to lift it up 6 foot and now the wind is blowing. I might need to post pone this project. Sigh. As I am typing the wind is getting even worse.Tomorrow is another day. I will safely dig post holes instead. LOL

Eve, I have this mexican tile w/the blue accents around the home. The house was the rich gold color, and the blue is a natural accent. I love this color blue and knew I wanted it over the pond. bring in blue and gold ceramic pots and plant shade loving plants (if that portion is in the shade). I'm sure a bougainvillea would do great against the house where it gets sun. set out some wire or a trellis so it can trail I hung up some orchids on that wood wall. You could try that w/ivy plants or any other local plant you liketry displaying a bunch of air plants on dried branches or driftwood. just mist them daily if it's hot

Mosaic is the answer!!! But.......
I did a bunch in those 1/2 marbles this fall for my mailbox,and just warn you.........I almost ended up in the hospital! they are sooooo slick. They will need to be replaced this spring. They look so great....but are are on their way out. I mosaic real close and tight, so my grout lines are not wide enough for traction..so with glass and tiles..
give yourself more grout space for stepping stones!
