Major root rot and damage -- repair?

My Schefflera is in very bad shape. 10 of the small trunks are mushy at the base, and of the 2 left over, the root is solid but there isn't much root at all after I trimmed away the mushy root. I assume a mushy stem means it's done for.

There is one trunk with a couple wilting leaves at the top, but the roots and stem base is mushy. The rest have no leaves, but one good trunk had some new growth at the base except it fell off when I was working on it (sigh), it has minimal root.

I guess a picture is worth a thousand words: http://74.97.113.14/~eric/plant3.jpg

Is there ANYTHING I can do to save this? I've searched and had suggestions to try planting a cutting, but I'm not sure how, or where to cut ... This plant was rather sentimental, and I don't know much about plants which is probably evident at this point. I feel so bad since I did this by overwatering, not knowing what I'm doing.

Thank you for reading.

Eric
