How do I make my scented geranium bushy, and not so leggy??
Comments (2)Hi, I really can't say for sure w/out seeing the plant. But there are a few reasons plants become leggy rather than full. One being, they are too far away from the light. The stems are reaching for the light and b/c it is too far away for the plant to benefit from it, there is very little growth in the leaves. Another one is lack of fertilizer. Plants need food to be healthy. If light isn't the cause, try pinching off the tips of the stems that are leggy. And if there is any new growth, as in leaves, cut them off. This will encourage the roots to produce more foliage from the soil line. I'm sure others will jump in and give more usefull advise. Hope this helps. . . Comments (16)Thanks for the reply, Josh. >> How long have the cuttings been in the tray? Here is the full history. Jul 30: cut the tops and let them dry on a paper towel, Aug 1 (2 days): planted into dry gritty mix, Aug 12 (11 days): bottom-watered for the first time to the point where the mix got fully saturated, then drained, but all the greenery on top was totally dry, Aug 27 (15 days): watered from top; leaves got wet; put it back under lights to dry. Sep 2 (6 days): misted heavily to wet the very top of the soil - but of course the above-ground parts all got wet too. Noticed one tip cutting dried up (did not rot but looked like dried up) below the lowest leaves, so basically whatever part was in the mix. There were no roots on that cutting. I pulled another very gently, and there was a tiny bit of resistance. No roots visible anywhere through the walls of the transparent container. >> If you can see roots on the bottom, nope, cannot. >> The donor plants look just a touch pale It may be the lighting, which is very bright and cold/blue (6500K) - taken under the grow fixture. I'll check during the day and might post another picture if I can get one where the color looks true. >> I'd be curious as to how frequently you fertilize. Jul 23: repotted into gritty mix and watered generously, Jul 25 (2 days): afraid pine bark was dry, so I bottom-soaked it for 45 minutes or so. Jul 30 (5 days): took the cuttings, fertilized for the first time (fertilizer is Foliage-Pro 9-3-6, always at quarter-strength). Aug 15 (16 days): fertilized. Aug 21 (6 days): fertilized. Sep 5 (give or take a day, 15 days): will fertilize again. What would you say?...See MoreHow do I get store bought vine to transfer to trellis?
Comments (1)Hi, Some vines have tendrils, like Clematis for example, that grab onto a trellis, fence etc and grow up. Others like virginia creeper have disks that adhere to structures. Some need to be trained and mounted to the trellis, like climbing roses. It all depends on which vine you get. You may have to start it out by training it around, or it will do its own thing. the little wood trellis is just to support the small vine until you plant it and it has something bigger to climb. Good luck, and let us know which vine you choose! Bet it will be beautiful. Jen...See MoreHow do you prune petunias to keep them bushy
Comments (5)Check the label that came with them. Some varieties of petunias are "mounding" or "bushy;" some are trailing or spreading such as the Waves. Waves should not need pruning, but they do spread out in every direction. I saw one large (probably 24") planter filled with three or four upright geraniums, with one Wave petunia in the center. It spread around, over, under, and through the geraniums and made a lovely display with their blossoms above it....See Moreamany
