Anyone grow winter squash in a container?
Comments (4)I grew butternut (Waltham) and Zuchetta Tromba d'Albenga in 20 gallon Smart Pots this year (two vines per pot). I planted the butternut too late (early July) to get a good read on its performance, but it did manage to produce two small squash. I planted the zuchetta much earlier (May), and it really impressed me with its production and vigor. While not technically a winter squash, it's closely related to butternut (both are C. moschata) and, so, I'd I'm inclined to say that butternut should do much better if planted earlier in the season....See MoreToo late to grow butternut squash?
Comments (18)What can it hurt.I have seen lots of other people do it.... --------------------------------------------------------- What can hurt is that if there are several squashes hanging down from a vine and then you get a wind blowing ... then the vine might not be able to hold on. Luckily, butternut squashes are not very big, in comparison to other winter squashes. but still not a good practice, IMO. You trellis cukse, summer squash, because they are smaller AND are harvested in a week or so. But winter squash needs to stay there for months....See MoreGrowing Butternut Squash in Fall - Zone 9
Comments (7)It could be there isn't enough time left to mature winter squash if you plant at the end of summer. You have to really think about how planting is different in the fall compared to spring. In the fall the light is decreasing and time to maturity could be as much as one third longer. Also the nights are getting colder instead of warmer. Night temps are probably more important than daytime since most plants want about 20 degree change to really produce fruit yet they are damaged when too cold. Warm days and cool nights can produce heavy dew which are great conditions for disease. That doesn't mean you "can't" grow certain vegetables but most suggestions for fall planting are geared to "need for food" or commercial farming. If you're planting to feed a family with no outside sources, you don't take chances. Since you already have them flowering I'd at least see if they set. Maybe if you have limited space and more things to plant, you could remove them but I always try to push the envelope with something each year and consider it a learning experience....See MoreButternut squash-does it grow up or across ground?
Comments (4)Well could be, then if it very healthy maybe not. I think 3-4ft would be ok. If it gets out of hand just snip off some of the trailer ends and stop it from spreading. Don't water from above No wet leaves(fungus). Watch for squash bugs, You should be on your way to some nice butter nut.
