How effective field drying will be depends greatly on the specific climate. Doesn't work for all by any means. The goal is to provide a dry, out of direct sun location with good air circulation. If you have a place to do it in the house, fine. Most just don't want all the dirt and mess in the house. Spread on a tarp under a shaded deck that has a cross draft of air.works for me. Dave

Thanks Planatus, was ready to harvest when the sun came out. Going to give them a few more days. Also busy dealing with green beans (blue lake bush) which had been beaten down. Discovered my new favorite way to pick beans, just pull out the plant and pick. I think that will be the way to go, picking beans with a bad shoulder, knee, and elbow is very challenging. Bean seed is cheap, let them get the way we want them-Bingo! I'm sure the "green bean police" will be after me...:-) The next challenge will be tomato blight in the San Marzanos. I live in zone 8, Western Oregon. I planted Walla Walla plants in September last year and am now harvesting the biggest sweetest onions you can imagine.

I like to collect my own seed and I am looking for help in overwintering the walla walla's I just harvested. I want to plant them next spring and collect the seed. Two years ago I put 24 onions back in the garden in October and covered them with 8" thick flakes of straw. We had 2' of snow and roughly one half rotted because of all the moisture when the snow melted. I did collect seed from the rest. Last winter the weather was weird with all the snow melting in December and then freezing and snowing and thawing etc. Onions did not do well at all. Has anyone successfully stored their walla walla's over winter either in the ground or out. Thanks Straw
