Sweet Potato Harvesting?

Hi there old friends,

I don't get around here much nowadaze but I'm at the library today and thought that I'd ask for opinions about SPs. Last week I harvested about 80% of my SPs since they were over 120 days from transplanting, got a pretty good harvest out of them. But I purposely left about 20% out in the field to harvest just before the first frost hits (maybe 3 weeks from now). Unfortunately we just got 5" of rain after a long hot dry summer and I'm betting that these remaing SPs will be splitting open. Is there really any advantage in leaving them out until the first frost? This seems to be the normal recommendation in the gardening books I read. Your thoughts and experiences are greatly appreciated.

Thanks, vgkg
