Time for a New Roll Call

Hi Everyone! With so many new faces on the forum, thought it would be fun to start a new roll call! Tell us who you are and something about yourself, what your garden junk likes are, and link to any blog or photo websites you may have. Look forward to "meeting" you!

I'll start! I'm Kirk and I am a Garden Junkaholic! LOL Sounds like an AA meeting! :o) My wife Carol and I live in the country in a wooded area in Washington State with our young children, ages 1 1/2 and 8. We also have 2 older children, ages 18 and 21. I am a fourth grade public school teacher, and Carol is a librarian in the local homeschool prgram. I love art and gardening, and we both love creating rustic and glass things for our gardens! We enjoy watching wildlife and enjoying the great outdoors! (Carol is also an incredible quilter and loves stained glass making as well.)

We have developed so many lasting friendships through this forum! We love this place!

I linked our Photobucket files below. Let's hear about you!!!! Bear Hugs! Kirk

    Far North Gardeners Roll Call

    Q

    Comments (150)
This is such a good idea! I've wondered if some of you could have been my neighbors in the various places I've lived. Anyhow it's nice to be "online" neighbors now. GW Name - luckygal What does your GW name stand for? - I don't really believe in "luck" but I feel very blessed to have survived so well this long. Real Name - Katie Age - 66 Companion - same husband for over 42 years Children? - 3 nice adult kids and 6 wonderful grandkids Pets? - 3 indoor cats, 2 we chose from the SPCA and 1 who chose us - he just wondered by one day and needed feeding, and one outdoor feral cat we feed who keeps the mice under control. We're between dogs. Where do you live or used to live? - have lived in rural BC near the middle of the province for almost 20 years, originally from the west coast of BC, have lived in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Germany Zone? - 3b (according to the Canadian Zone Map) Do you work? - yes, but since I retired I don't get paid as much for it! Have been a jill-of-many-trades and master of a few. Companion Occupation? - ex-military, retired teacher Other interests besides gardening? - various crafts, sewing, knitting, crochet, reading, computer, yard saling, repurposing yard sale finds, interior decorating (DH calls me Martha when I get too obsessed), photography, traveling now that we are retired How long have you been gardening? - 60 years at least (difficult even for me to believe) - my parents were avid gardeners and I helped from an early age. Where is your garden located and what is its size? - we have a large acreage and the garden is near the house, sort of large city lot size but could be larger. Courses in Horticulture? - no, self-taught, but with many mentors What are your specialities in gardening? - propagating houseplants but I'm no longer doing that as it tends to get out of hand (who really needs 30 diefenbachia?), I like growing perennials from seed and nurturing yard sale plant finds, I like planning my garden then deviating from the plan. My DH would say it's leaning on my shovel and telling him what to do! Favorite Flower? - delphiniums, Lady's Mantle, geranium Vancouver centennial (more for it's foliage) are a few Favorite Tree/Shrub? - dogwood altho it doesn't grow in our climate What has been the best-performing plant/plants in your gardens? - shasta daisies and feverfew which are overly prolific self-seeders, irises, delphinium, Lady's Mantle, various poppies, Autumn Joy, and lots more - I'd have to think. Most Challenging Plant? - lavender, I started with 3 plants a few years ago and have one left which seems to struggle to survive every year. I think I need to create a mini-climate which is dryer and warmer but it's easier to just visit a lavender farm and buy some dried. Favorite Gardening Quote? - "I appreciate the misunderstanding I have had with Nature over my perennial border. I think it is a flower garden; she thinks it is a meadow lacking grass, and tries to correct the error." ~Sara Stein, My Weeds, 1988 Favorite Garden Magazines? - have only ever taken Gardens West and Harrowsmith subscriptions but no longer - occasionally borrow from the library, there is much more info online Favorite Garden Books or resources? - have 4 of Lois Holes' books which I use, some old gardening books I seldom read, Richters herb catalogue which is fun to dream with, online sites and forums What is your favorite tool? - my little red wagon which I use instead of a wheelbarrow in the house yard. DH got me a second one, a green one to use out in the back-40 for picking sticks. Both yard sale finds $10 each. I also really like using our old cement mixer, it's like this huge noisy toy! We've made hypertufa pots, concrete rhubarb leaf stepping stones, and I like mixing my own garden-healthy mulch in it. What are you most comfortable in when gardening? - shorts, shell or t-shirt, flip-flops mostly or heavy workboots if I have to dig, if it's cold fleece pants and tops, same footware, cotton gloves changed frequently when muddy or rubber gloves occasionally, depending on what I'm doing. What has been your best garden project? - When we had a new water line dug they struck rock the entire way so DH hauled huge rocks in the tractor bucket and created a rockery on a slope near the house. It's become overgrown so I need to replan and replant soon but I love those huge half buried rocks. He also more recently built me a large decorative-only birdhouse out of old barnboard and it's in the garden all summer and on the verandah in the winter. Any projects in the works or planned? - started a lasagna bed this summer over part of the lawn and we're adding to it, hope it produces great veggies next year. Am thinking about a garden house, probably plan it over the winter. Would love to enlarge the garden area more but I think that might be biting off more than I can do. If you had an unlimited budget, what would you do with your gardens? - I've always wanted a bobcat to play with but with an unlimited budget I'd probably hire a landscaper and gardener also and keep them busy for awhile. Buy a hammock and watch them work! Cottage style all the way with gazebo, ponds, streams, bridges a la Monet's garden. If you could invent a plant, what would it look like? - hardy for my zone, resistant to all plant problems, long-lived perennial, very blue and it would look just like my delphiniums but smell like a spicy rose. Would that seem weird or what? Describe an experience with a garden pest that had you ready to throw in the trowel? - being "bug-phobic" I try not to think about them and the birds eat most of the bugs in the garden altho we have zillions of ants, also voracious deer, and pine, spruce and fir beetles in the forest. Plant pests are dandelions, wild yarrow, chickweed, and various pasture grasses that seed. I try to be organic but occasionally use ant dust around the perimeter of the house so they don't eat it! Otherwise it's live and let live here. Parts of the lawn are turning into yarrow groundcover which I may address, or not. Hey, it's green. What advice do you have for the novice gardener? - Join your local garden club, read everything you can about gardening - discover gardening forums and online sites, read library books, start composting, plan a bit, then just get out and do it your way and have fun. Don't waste a lot of money on expensive plants until you actually have good soil to plant them in. We learn more from our mistakes than our successes so don't be afraid to try. What is your motivation for gardening? - I'm incapable of not gardening, it's in my genes.

Sorry Evelyn! My mind isn't quite in the game lately. I've been working 16-20 hour days. We've got around 80 registered so far but if each one brings somebody.... We're still three weeks away and I'd bet there will be another 20-30 register. I'm not including those that don't/won't register either; that's usually half the group! HALF of those who have registered are first-timers so you know more than 40 of the old crew is going to be there!!! At the risk of alienating some folks...we're trying to get an idea of a fairly solid number on those that are going to attend. It sure helps with the logistics if you're trying to run one of these and prepare. Remember the Ms. Cheap debacle??? I never want to be blind-sided and unprepared like that again. And I'm sure that you guys would appreciate better organization. We are also trying to build our MTPS database. These are the reasons that you are asked to register on the website. Please do me this LAST favor and register if you are coming. Since this is my going away swap I'd really love for it to be very special! Your next MTPS Director is going to really need your help. I've had two decades (maybe not quite that long) to get use to this but imagine coming in cold and hitting the ground running! We're going to need better cooperation to insure better organization; it's a two-way street. A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU THAT HAVE REGISTERED!!!

Most of the archives seem to still be here, although they might not show up initially in a search. Fortunately for me, my clippings were saved, and the links there to some of the older threads still work. I never saved a link to the first Shelly Bean thread, though... so I hope someone still has a link to that one. I did notice that some of the longer posts (such as were often posted here on the Bean Forum) have been truncated, with some info cut off. I wonder if the limits to thread length previously imposed by GW will still apply? If we can have longer, multi-year discussions on some topics, that would be a good thing.

Well, I am not really a Garden Junkie - though I do have a lot of 'old' stuff that I can't seem to part with.

We are Holly and Brian and we live in Morgantown, WV. Born and raised here, though I spent 25 years in Chicago (wonderful city), New York City (also a wonderful place) and Los Angeles (a true hell-hole). Moved back to WV from Maryland to help take care of my mother, who had altzheimers for about 25 years. Met Holly and never left again.

Holly was born in a small town in northern WV (I call it Pickens). It is called Cameron, but hardly a bold name on a map.

She has two daughters - Jo who is Oscar's (Emily) mother and works for me so that I get to spend at least 8 hours a day 5+ days a weeks with Oscar - who will be 3 in April. We spend most of our time, when I am not pretending to work, drawing and learning and having fun! Her parents want to send her to day-care, but I am adament about not doing that until she is really ready.

Now that I finally have one, I see that FAMILY is way too important and I want her to KNOW that she always has someone(s) that she does not need to have secrets from. Hope I am not wrong, but we will see in about 15 years I guess.

Her pediatrian says that she is mentally developed to a 4 or 4 year old and I tend to pat myself on the back for that. She is a lefty and I am not, so art can be a challenge. We do sing a lot together and she is a Jan & Dean and Beach Boys fan - is starting to get into Peter Gabriel with me and we were all surprised when she sat with me for a couple of hours listening to symphony. I have been trying to teach her what little (very little) Japanese I know and she can count to ten and say thank-you.

The other entitlement daughter I do not care to speak about, but let it suffice that she finally got pushed out of the nest (kicking and screaming) after Christmas this year and it was the best gift I could ever get.

I have no children and was actually neutered while in college so that I wouldn't have any. Came from an abusive background and was afraid I would do that to my kids as well. Know better now!

Degree's from West Virginia University in Advertising/Marketing, first Masters from the University of Chicago in Business/Marketing Communications and another Master from WVU in commercial banking/institutional finance. Use none of them, but not sorry I went - would like to have gone to law school, but it took a lot of years to pay off the loans for U of C.

I have been doing what I do for over 25 years, but I can not explain it to people. I invented the first laptop desk/stand to go into a vehicle in 1984. (Told you I was old). Build and maintain our own website and still 'invent' or design products for the mobile market, but gave up a long time ago on wanting to be much more than a family owned business with old fashion customer service type values. If you are interested in some of the things I have invented/designed over the years, take a look at the website link. Not trying to sell you anything, honest!

Prior to that I worked for 3 of the 5 largest adverising agencies in the world, (production, creative and consumer research) but I am not much of a yes-sir, nor-sir type person, so I moved on to making my own mistakes!

Was a 'conduit' in the early 80's between management and information technology (before it was called that) to translate what management wanted in the way of computer stuff and the 'propeller heads' that had no idea (still don't) how a business operates.

Holly has more initials after her name than anyone I know. She is an RN and an Infusion Specialist, but is now the training director for a major east coast health care concern with 120+ hospitals under her guidance.

Someone in this family had to have more interest in income than me - I just like giving it away and buying turtles :-) I can not tell anyone enough how wonderful a person she is and how lucky I am that we were ever introduced. (Don't tell her I said that as I don't want it to go to her head).

Secret that not many people know. Because of my utter disdain for my father, when he died I took my entire enheritance and donated it, anonymously to a variety of charities that cater to children. My favorites are Big Brothers/Sister, Make-A-Wish and the Children's Miracle Network. There are a lot more out there and there is a lot of need for abused kids!

I am a 20 year (8/8/88) leukemia survivor and am alive because I went to Europe for stem cell therapy. Last year I almost died again from the European version of Streptococcus Pneumonia (which is pneumonia of the blood and attacks the brain (where I had it worst), the lungs and the spinal fluid. Spent 9 weeks on and offer in intensive care and eventually we found the cause. Because it was in the brain, I have very little memory of what happened.

The NA version manifests itself in a couple of weeks - European version took 5 or 6 Years! Special designer drugs and I am healing nicely - with the assistance of a wonderful doctor - the love of a wonderful wife - and the Special Love of Oscar.

You know the old saying - only the good die young!

I love to cook, BBQ, draw/paint, garden to some degree and movies. Can't usually remember what they are called but my 3 all-time favorites are Lord of the Rings, The Bucket List and I have just added Australia! Have a tendancy to like to take things apart to see how they work and fix things that don't - though I usually have no clue what I am doing.

We like to travel and have been to New Zealand and Australia 5 or 6 times. I am particularly partial to New Zealand. We are talking about an Alaskan cruise this summer, but a lot of things depend on whether we can do it or not.

I also like a semi-yearly trip to Vegas for some blackjack. Love to play bridge, but finding 3 more people that even know what it is, is difficult.

Sorry to have bored you, but I do like to talk.

Hi I am Cindee and I live in Far Northern California. Zone 9!
I love collecting junk for the garden especially old rusty stuff. I love gardening!!!! It has been a life long passion. I love anything that will grow in our hot dry summers and cold wet winters.
I have been married almost 27 years and I have two grown children. A daughter almost 22 and a son 24.
I love my rat terrier Jack to pieces. He is my best friend and he also helps with garden pests. (-:
I also love to sew and I love making primitive things for my home. I hate sewing clothes for humans though. How funny is that?
I am pretty much a homebody and I really believe I would be happy never leaving my property(-: But, I must work to pay the bills!!! I am a school cook and I love it!!!

My turn. I am Mindy and I live in Charlotte, NC. I am neither a Yankee nor a Southern because I have lived in both areas. My dad was a yankee and my mom a southerner. I have lived in Charlotte off and on all of my life and I am hoping to stay here now. Charlotte is ok but I actually prefer PA or NY but my kids are down here so this is where I need to be. I am married to Gary (5+ years) and he is my 2nd husband. I have a son that is 22 and a daughter that is almost 16. We just bought a new home that we really love. It is a ranch that is just the right size and everything for us.
I am not sure how I found this forum but I am sure that I was looking up shade garden information. We have a fabulous new yard but 75% or more is shady. Not very familiar with shade gardening but learning a lot. I can't wait for summer when I can start planting some of the things that will grow in the shade. I love growing things but my biggest passion is kids. I never ever get too much of them and so I am hoping to go back to school so that I can teach. Teaching elementary school would be the nicest thing that I could ever imagine.
I think that I am just a natural junker. I have always loved stuff and the less useful the stuff is, the more I like it. Just makes sense to make stuff out of other stuff if you ask me. I have always believed that it was important to be a bit creative because if you are smart without the creative edge your intelligence is wasted. I agree with everyone else these pages and people just seem like home so this is my favorite hangout. There are so many fun and interesting people on here, how could I not be happy when I read these pages! Thanks to everyone for your valued friendship and creativity.

After a week+ of no computer (YIKES! I hate that when it crashes!) I'll join in also. I'm Arlene and I live in north central Ohio. My screenname comes from my love to click - both the mouse (yes, I'm a computer junkie) and my camera. My hubby Roger and I have been married for 29 years and he is an inspector for our local fire dept. I haven't had an "official" job since staying home to raise our kids, but I do manage to keep way too busy with my craft shows - a few in the spring, then farmer's markets all summer and then craft shows every weekend Oct - mid December. I love recycling - to me a perfect day consists of jumping in our old pick up with my rowdy boys and going trashpicking in a nearby town. They're not shy about grabbing anything - I just drive and say "GET THAT!" and they jump out and throw it in the back! (I don't like getting out!) I love picking up old windows, old chairs, etc. and then remaking them into something of worth. Hubby has a wood shop with all the tools and know-how, so he helps out. My dream is to have a resale shop someday when he retires.

I have quite large perenniel gardens that keep me very busy. I like decorating with rustic accents - wood, stone, rusty things. I get lots of ideas from all of you here on the forum and I rarely miss a day reading posts, although I often don't have time to reply or post myself.

We have two boys - ages 19 and 22 - and my only grandson just turned 1 at Thanksgiving. He captivates all our time and attention these days - we're IN LOVE! (and spoilin' him sooo bad!)

Nice meeting you all - and here's my photo link:

Hello...I'm Helen. I joined Garden Junk in 2007 after years of lurking, and drooling over everyone's "stuff". I have lived in East Tennessee all of my life. I have been married for 41 years to my one and only. He was a policeman for 35 years and is now retired and working as a court security guard. I retired 4 years ago from the school system where I worked as an educational assistant.

When I found this site, I thought I had died and gone to heaven! I've always been frugal and the thought of taking junk and making it into garden art was right up my alley. I also like to do recycled crafts and take yard sale/thrift store pieces and turn them from trash to treasure.

I don't post much because I don't have much to show lately, but I do try to comment on other's ideas and junk/art whenever I can. I love to see what everyone is making, because the people on this site are such an inspiration.

I have missed everyone here since my computer died in September! But I am back now and will be complaining about something soon-LOL
I found GardenWeb in 1998, via the seed exchange section. Soon found Accoutrements, which soon split to garden junk when some folks complained about our 'junk', so I have been at the junk site since the very beginning. Have seen a lot of people come and go--Some were brilliant with their creations, and I miss them. Wish they would come back! However, we have input and inspiration from new members that is also wonderful. I have not done a lot since 2004, when there were a lot of problems beginning for me--The van that crashed through the garden (see 'my page') and then Bill's diagnose of cancer (and his death in 2007, after 50 years and 8 months of marriage. Thank you all for the support during that time). And then Ivan in 2004, plus all the hurricanes of 2005 (We were in the edge of most of them that year). A lot of setbacks for the garden PLUS all the weeds!!!
I have one daughter and Son-in-law (married 17 years) and NO grandchildren.

I love garden junk and have always been a 'junker' so this site really hits the spot!

Now I hope to go on to bigger and better things, and start using more of the junk that I have been collecting--I have been printing all that inspires me, so I have lots to do!
My website has not been updated lately, but here it is anyway.....

Howdy Ya'll! My name is Vickie. I've been a native Texan for 50 years. In '77 I moved out to Colorado Springs, Colorado to attend The Nazarene Bible College. It was my first time out of the town where I was raised and where DH & I now live. Met my husband at TNBC, a native of Colorado and we've been together for (wait I have to add it up), 29 years. We moved back to my hometown in Texas to look after aging parents and haven't left. We have two boys (27 & 24) The youngest has been married two years to a wonderful girl but are not talking grandbabies yet. I soooo want to be a "grannnnniiieee".
The Bristish sitcom, Keeping Up Appearances is a favorite show of mine. I just love the antics that the main character, Hyacinth Bucket gets herself into trying to be something she ain't. She's like Lucille Ball. Hyacinth braggs about her high priced, hand-painted, periwinkle blue teaware in just about every episode. Since I love tea pots, cups & saucers, I put a twist to the KUA name & call myself akup_a.
I too found this forum by searching for garden related items and have camped here. It is the best hang-out spot around. I've always been creative and this forum allows me to use that creativity. DH begged me to put a lid on my creativity because he couldn't keep up! So, I turned to the garden to create to give him a break. That's when I found all these wonderful people, family.

Wow, what a bunch of old farts we are!

treasureforu - just my .02 - but has anyone pointed you in the direction of Hens & Chicks? They grow everywhere and anywhere and we learned this past year that many get a tall stalk that blooms.

I am also a bit partial to Lilly of the Valley, which is a great shade plant/flower and spreads nicely.

Sorry, not sure what stuff is called as if it blooms I call it a "croquis".

Hello all! well, my name is LiAnn and I live in Calera, AL. and I LOVE JUNK! I can't help it, ever since I was a kid I have always found "treasures" everywhere I went. I have lived in my house for about 2 1/2 yrs. It didn't have anything really in the yard except for 6 trees and 3 gardenias. its really shady and I love that. so I have been adding my treasures to it slowly. I have been with my husband for almost 13 years now, married for almost 9 of them. I am a dog groomer and I love it. Animals are my life. I have 4 small dogs, 8 cats, 1 tortoise, 2 lizards, 1 bird, and 1 snake. I also share custody of 4 large dogs with my mother because her yard it huge and I am at her house every day to take care of them. I have no kids so my animals mean alot to me. I have never posted any pictures of my garden junk but am here all the time. and I love doing mosaics. hopefully will post pics soon. :)

Hello, I am mostly a lurker, but prefer to call myself a looker. I'm Linda and I live in north Mississippi just south of Memphis. I posted here a number of years ago, but I can't remember what name I used. Mandatory overtime at work put the computer on the back burner for a loooonnnnng time. I mostly hang out at Kitchen Table now, but have to come here every few days to see what's new and pretty, or often what's old and pretty.

I've dabbled in dozens and dozens of crafts over the years for both the inside and outdoors. DH and I lived on 10 acres with a big barn until 5 years ago. I had so much stuff stored in that barn because I had planned to cover the entire 10 acres with pretty flowers and lots of "stuff" as time allowed. My mandatory overtime at work became so excessive that it was getting dangerous driving 50 miles each way to and from Memphis working 12 and 16 hour shifts. We finally had to give up the 10 acres and move to a subdivision just 11 miles from work. I thought I had about 10 more years to work and just couldn't keep up with everything. As it ended up I retired 6 years earlier than planned. I like our house just fine, but it still makes me sick to think about all the good garden junk stuff I had to part with. Oh well, this yard will do just fine. It just won't take as long to fill it up.

Dh and I adopted our 12 year old niece a couple of years ago. She has lived with us 7½ years. She's such a joy. We have three big, goofy dogs now. They keep things interesting around here. :)

I'm enjoying reading about all of you and your interests.

    Linda

Hi everyone! I lurk here a lot and post more on the Texas Gardening and Computer forums. My husband and I are a little past 50 and are finally empty-nesters. We have 2 kids, a son who got married in May and lives nearby and a daughter who lives in Lancaster, PA with her hubby and our 1 year old grandson. I am a Texas Master Gardener and maintain the website for our chapter. By trade, I am a helpdesk analyst.

I love to see all of the creations that you folks come up with for your gardens and I plan to create some totems and glass flowers for my own gardens. I guess glass is my favorite garden 'junk' although I prefer to think of it as art ☺ We love outdoorsy stuff and hike and camp a lot.

    Hi everyone,
I am Tami.I am 50 years old with grown twin sons. Both are engaged to be married. I have been a nurse for 20 + years in a local hospital. I live in southcentral ,Pa. I am a relatively new garden junker, so I look to these forums for ideas as to what I can do with the things I just cannot throw away. I live in a very rural spot on a wooded lot that is just total serentiy to me. Now I am trying to develop my skills as a gardener & I have learned lots about shade gardening & gardening with natives since I found this site. I have had some success & some learning experiences in the gardening & the junking arenas. I mostly lurk here, but I have posted a few things from time to time.

Hi! My name is Dottie and I was born in Virginia and lived there until 1986 when my family moved to Central New York. I am married to a wonderful man that I found online, of all places. We have a one-acre property in a semi-rural area of Oswego County and live near the Oneida River (it's across the street). It's great here, but the winters are starting to wear on me.

We have no children, but with a crazy cat called Jasmine, well that's enough. She'll be 14 this fall.

I love garden junk (even before I knew it had a name) and am currently passionate about mosaics, stained glass, and hypertufa to name a few. I usually have so many ideas running through my head that I have a hard time getting projects finished...LOL.

DH is into woodworking and works for a building supply company, so we have a good supply of salvaged materials to work with...too many in fact. I told DH we can't build any more storage sheds....at least not until my greenhouse is finished (it's being made out of old windows).

Some of my projects will be featured in Birds and Blooms this Spring (exact issue unknown as of today) and another publication that is supposed to be out in February. When I know the particulars I will post them on the board. For now, you can see my stuff on my website.

I love copying your ideas, cos I don't have the imagination!!! DH just doesn't get it, everything I drag home is just plain junk to him!!! Hello, I'm Edie from southern Indiana.(about 35 miles west of Louisville, Ky) Been married to the love of my life for 37 years and have 4 grown kids, 3 grands, 2 horses, 3 dogs, 3 cats and grandson has a rat. Live on 10 acres, have a large flower garden. Been busy filling it with garden glamour. Love to search junk stores and see things that it can be. Love to dabble with concrete, paint pavers and rocks, love snowmen, and just sit in my garden and listen to the birds. I am a restaurant manager at Olive Garden. It's amazing and sad how much stuff is thrown away. Have quite a collection of chipped plates, worn out kitchen stuff and corks. I have a fasination with corks. They should be reused. Have made note boards, coasters, snowmen, ornaments, used them as mulch and often ponder what else I can do. Would love to retire, but bank account won't allow it. Love to travel--worked 4 months in Alaska outside Denali National Park. LOVE IT. It is so nice to read posts from people who like the things I like. I'm not so weird after all.....well maybe I still am weird. Would love to meet other garden webbers in my area? Any around me?

Thank you Kirk for starting this post. I am enjoying it so much and I look for it first thing when I come on to the boards! It is so nice to get to know a little bit about the people on this board. This really is the nicest place to hang out. All of the junk is wonderful too but my husband is admit that I can't have a toilet or bones anywhere on the property!

Hi all you wonderful talented people. (Sorry, I'm another lurker.)

In fact I've lurked for so long my registration lapsed. :-\

I found this forum quite some time ago and really have no idea why I've never posted. Inferiority complex I'm almost positive. :)

Anyway, New Year, time to break out of the box so to say.

I'm Liz from NW Oregon - recently the land of ice and snow. I live in an old farmhouse with my husband of 26 years, 4 of our 6 children, one granddaughter who is two and apparently cannot communicate without screetching, and one spayed tabby cat who apparently feels she is said 2 yr. olds mother and absolutely delights in making the child screetch.

Needless to say, I am a bit frazzled, but I feel it adds a certain edginess to my "art". *grins* My loves in garden junk are rust, crystals, barnwood, old benches and chairs (or newer ones I've aged delightfully), china mosaic on anything, and anything I can break/disassemble and glue staple wire or nail to something else for texture and color.

I have a little shop where I sell some of my junk and some of my "recycled into not so junky junk". We're not on the web yet, but hope to be as soon as I'm not so technodisabled.

I have to tell you all how much I've enjoyed this forum. It's a wonderful place because of all of you regulars. Hopefully, now that I've dipped a toe in the waters I'll work up the nerve to post again. Hope all of you have had a fantastic start to your New Year. :-)

Hello all you wonderful talented people!! I'm Sherri from OOOOOOklahoma! Just outside of Tulsa. I turned the big 50 this year!! I was born here, lived 11 years in Texas then back here. I have lived in Minnesota and Georgia for short periods of time. I have a super wonderful DH of 10 years, we have two sons, one who is 20 and goes to school, a 17 year old and a new son we just took guardianship of, who is 16. They all still live at home. Between us we have a son and two daughters that have their own families. We call ourselves the Brady bunch, only its 4 boys and 2 girls! We have 13 grandbabies between us, and I do mean that literally. Some of them still hafta snuggle right between us in our bed when they spend the night!!! We live on 2 1/2 acres and have a large veggie and strawberry garden every year. We have some chickens which give us lots of fresh eggs. Our momma and daddy cats had three babies last Fall and then we inherited a stray baby kitty about the same time, so now we have six cats. We have one extremely spoiled Chihuahua, Chili, who thinks he is human. We own an industrial floor coating business, like the floors you see on airport hangars at Cessna or Boeing. OK, now, lets see, what else... Oh we love to camp, go boating and fishing, well..., I fish until I get bored. I have been known to haul a suitcase on board the boat and craft or bring my laptop, then get mad when someone waves their fishing pole over me and gets water on my laptop!!!Yep, its true, I did that, go figure! I love garden junk, lodgey and camp style stuff. Just anything prim or country.
Y'all are my second family..I have never seen such a caring little family like this. You are all wonderful and I am so thankful for you. Thx for letting me be a part of it all.
    You are my blessings-sherri

Hi my name is Jacki aka msjay2u and I am a procrastinator!!
I first came onto garden web on the decorating forum. I got some help with ideas on how to paint and doll up my cottage. I have painted it but am still working on the exterior (shutters, flower boxes etc) in steps and I have not followed up with them yet so they can see how it all turned out. They will be suprised! It is not finished yet though and I want them to be happy with my end results. I finally figured out my window problem and I am working on that. I think after I get them painted I will give those guys an update. They also helped me out a lot with my kitchen ideas and it is still a work in progress.

In the meantime, someone recommended this forum to me and I been a lurker ever since. I have ideas but no motivation to put them in action. I think time is against me (well any excuse is better than none).

I do actively participate in the farm forum although not as much lately.

I have been to many of you guys websites and I found all sorts of cute ideas, the shoe planters, the bowling balls, the totem poles and the hypertufla (spelling??) projects. Which reminds me I did see one lovely path made out of large leaves. It inspired me to do my own path. I did not use leaves I took what I thought was going to be the easy route and brought a mold. I did this and in May or June I think and it took me 2 weeks to finish that and I had to have help with it. I used cement and dang that stuff is hard to mix. I gave up after the first stir, No actually I gave up when I tried to move the bag. LOL. I did the shoveling into the mold and smoothing the pattern then sweept it with a broom to give it a little texture (to avoid slipping on it when wet). Now that I think about it that path was the stopping point of my projects. hmmmmmm maybe I need to try something much easier.

I love this site and I hope you guys keep the ideas coming. I have lots of your photos albums bookmarked. I appreciate you people even if I am slow to get anything done around here.

Hello, I have been reading this forum regularly for the past year or so, and have learned a lot from all you talented, creative people. My husband retired two years ago and we moved to the Georgia coast (closer to our seven grandchildren), so I am learning to garden all over. I mostly love to grow flowers, but because we really have no winter here and don't have to take things in for the winter, I am getting into garden decorations, especially when I can recycle something. I am especially interested in building and painting birdhouses and in fairy scenarios. Thanks to all you friendly, helpful, and creative people.

I check in from time to time. Spring will help get my spirit revived, I hope. Garden junk is my favorite-I love to check in and see the new ones. Garden junk just keeps on going. New ideas pop on here all of the time. Many thanks!! . Jlily

Hi all! 4 years ago my husband and I, in our early 50's, purchased a 14 acre orchard in central Kansas. It more than keeps us busy, and he has a full-time job outside the place. I run the orchard business, etc. and am able to enjoy gardening after living for years in town. We are both country people, and I love to find things others no longer want, and give those objects a new life.

I love the ideas and imaginations I see here. It feeds my need to be creative!

I'm not new , I been here since March 22, 2006. But I have been MIA for awhile.
I do many crafts along with my garden junk and crafts.
Woodburning, carving, painting, sewing, crochet, just about anything I can create something out of, I'll do it.
I am from Missouri, but now live in PA. My DH has adapted to my crafting quirks and even takes me junk shopping. Although he don't always see the potential a rusty old piece has in it,he knows I'll do something with it. I have so much I want to share with everyone, i could almost explode with craft ideas for inside and outside.
I come here for ideas and inspiration, as well as to hopeful inspire and help others, and to comment on everyone's beautiful creations.
It's nice to meet you all, and so nice to be back with my old friends as well.
You can sometimes find me over in the 'conversations' side of this forum, as I do go off topic at times ..LOL
    Glad to be back!

My links are on the thread with everyone elses links, I have one posted when the thread first started, and a newer one I posted today.

Hi all ! Been lurking around here since last year and have been so amazed and impressed with all the talent here. I live on the Gulf Coast of Alabama with my long-time BF.Between us, we have 8 grown children and 11 grandkids ( I have another little one due in July :>) ! I also have 2 weddings coming up this year.. my DD in New Orleans and my DS stationed at Ft.Drum N.Y. will be getting married in June and September respectively. Looks like it's going to be a busy year ! I am a Dispatcher supervisor and my BF is retired from the fire dept. We share our lives and our space with my 2 dogs. Sammy is a slightly mentally challenged 1 yr.old maltese and Shadow is a 3 yr.old rat terrorist ( yes,I spelled that right..lol ). I am also awed and amazed to have 5 wonderful horses ( plus,I'm waiting on my new foal to be born any day now ) who are really nothing more than overgrown lapdogs.I work so many hrs. that crafting is kind of on a back burner right now, plus we're getting ready to move to a larger place.Need more room for the critters, plus I want to plant some really large gardens, both flowers and vegetables.I have been hitting the TS buying things and stockpiling for the day I can finally have a moment to do something creative. I have fallen in love with some of the totems and the garden ladies ya'll have created.I spend time on the holiday forum too,and recognize some of the names here.I can't tell ya'll how glad I am that I found this forum !

    Hi I'm Carol

I began to lurk last year and got a lot of ideas. I went fleaing and garage sale hunting and have a lot of finds I hope to use this year. DH is the best in taking me on these adventures and doing the 'fixing it up' needed for me to use in most cases.

I come here for ideas and inspiration. Love the pics that get posted! I especially appreciate the recycle ideas and ways to save money. We have a very small yard so I'm limited to displays and mostly container gardening. I'd love to see more posts on people dealing with small spaces.

I also enjoy quilting an genealogy. If only I didn't have to work to support all these habits. HAHAH

Hi, I found this site about a year ago, but when I started redoing our 1954 home, got sidetracked for about a year. Now that it's done, I'M Back. Good to get caught up on such neat ideas. I'm working on the outside when the weather permits. Getting back into junking is so much fun. My name is Kathy, the first picture I posted here was of my window fence I made using the old wood windows from the house. Since then I have used almost all of the rest of them for a tomato garden to keep the critter out.

People don't recognize me because I'm just not a heavy poster. I do love reading about everyone else's ideas. My favorite garden junk is metal and glass. I love seeing things repurposed.

Hi, I'm Judy ...I'm new to Gardenweb, found it researching plants a few weeks ago and on another thread saw a comment about GJ site.Came here and have been addicted since. My poor BF is afraid to hear me say the words "Honey come here & look" right now!! lol I've been a crafter most of my life.I've tried all kinds. I love to paint any & everything. If you sit still long enough I'll paint you too. Also have always loved making stuff out of stuff and I am in heaven around you folks.Your projects and ideas, so MUCH talent & creativity.I have a shed full of "stuff" & crafting supplies I need to get motivated to use and you guys sure do motivate me.BF will be so happy as he asks me all the time what am I gonna do w/all the stuff!
I got into gardening about 25 years ago, took the MG class about 17 years ago so I could talk to people about plants w/o their eyes glazing over! I didn't know a whole lot when I took the class and am still learning every day.I'm lucky to live near Park Seed & Wayside Gardens here in Greenwood,S.C.During the Festival of Flowers week here they have a fabulous plant & bulb sale with incredible bargains and free seminars all the time.
I live w/my BF of five years on his 1 acre near on Lake Greenwood. When we met he had one sad little bed in the front. The land is hard clay so we're building beds one at a time and do alot of containers. He's jumped right in with gardening and loves to be the one to dig the holes and planting when I show him where I want it.Hes built me raised beds and cedar fences & trellis'I had no Idea he was so talented when we met. We're a good match together, Im lucky to have him in my life.
I was raised an AF brat and moved all over til my dad retired here in '72 when I was 17.My nickname Jitterbug came from him cos I used to try to dance when I was little like him & momma did.I've moved to boston & georgia & florida as an adult, but always came back here. I love the area, the people and the climate, except August when it gets so hot & muggy you cant breath sometimes lol. I worked at a local hospital for years in the records dept., moved to the Genetic Center to the fetal pathology Dept for a year and decided fetal autopsies were not my cup of tea. Opened a catering business and am now Service & Banquet Manager at a local hotel.
We have a 9 month old kitty, Monkeygirl who showed up here and we adopted her.We lost her 14 year old brother Mok Mok a few months after she came to live with us. Until her, he never let another cat anywhere near us, but took right to her, We think he knew he didnt have long and knew we need another baby to spoil rotten.
I have enjoyed reading about all of you and am looking forward to coming back and seeing all your wonderful projects. I have no idea how to start a site or upload pics to show off some of our stuff, but am going to see soom if i can find some help. Nice to meet all of you...... Judy

I don't know how I missed this the first several times.
I'm Kathy and live in New Hampshire with my husband of 20 years, and our 29 yo foster daughter who moved in again last June and hopefully will be leaving soon! I have 3 cats and dfd has 2 so we've got a house full. I'm several generations removed from the farm (many of my great grandparents were farmers), but still have the love of gardening gene and my parents both were gardeners as were their parents. I'm 53 and trying to accept the aches and pains.
A couple of friends and i had started casting concrete in old jello molds and putting the results around the garden, and I bought the garden junk book. So when I wandered into garden web about a year ago I was ready to jump in when I saw the words garden junk! Concrete 'n primroses are 2 of my favorite things, hence my name. My only claim to garden fame: I won best in show at the American Primrose Society's national show a few years back for a plant (Primula denticulata) and then the next year first prize for artistic design (theme: Boston Post Road).
I love glass in the garden (thanks to this forum)and went nuts making plate flowers last summer and fall.
Soo where are all the other New Englanders? Is there anyone else? But I don't feel alone, cuz I'm in the Kathy club - seems like a lot of us are Kathys.
    happy junking
    kathy
