our junk gazebo is finished!

Thought y'all might want to see another junk gazebo. As always, theres a story behind this project. I saw this battered jungle gym, went home and begged DH to come help. Even with manly brute strength ad a lot of rope (and a lot of eye rolling from DH!) this was almost too big for us to wrestle into the van. DH thought I was crazy when I told him what I wanted, so I waited til I got a hold of a catalog with an $800 metal gazebo. Boy, did his mind suddenly change in a hurry!

So we have spent the better part of this year sanding and priming and painting. We also put it up on some pvc legs (that new new plastic spray paint is awesome stuff). The toughest part was the two of us trying to figure out how to slide 8 pvc legs on this sucker and keep it upright at the same time. Lets just say it took us a few attempts and many colorful words from DH before we got it right!

In case you are wondering the "flag stone" in the patio and the top of the "marble" bench is scraps from a countertop wholesaler up the road from our house. They told the crazy lady she could take all the marble and granite scraps she wanted from their dumpster. I have 3 very nice "marble" benches now for the price of 12 cinderblocks. oh and the stone wall in the back is from a craig's list haul. Now I just gotta figure out what to do with the the 68 bricks I got at the same time. I think DH is beginning to realize an unsupervised wife and a cargo van is a bad combination - especially for his back!

How cool is that!!! Great Job!

I have learned not to look the DH in the eyes anymore, then I don't have to watch them roll!!

LOL, love your comment about the unsupervised wife and cargo van. Too funny. My van is a mini and has back passenger seat too, so I am "limited". Also have a husband who won't stay off golf course long enough to get involved, other than being able to roll his eyes like all of them do so well. That is a neat idea you came up with. Not to mention getting all the bricks and marble, sigh.

I wish mine was ready for landscaping around it after finishing it, but DH said I needed to hold off until next year after it's had time to settle (we had to move it to it's current location after taking some trees down).

Mom in hospital 9 days with AF & trying to care for dad(stroke 1 yr ago) at home. Bro. had to fly to East Coast for business. Other bro. came in sick-so it goes .I'm on my own except for DD some & lady taking care of dad some mornings(& snooping through the house!!) Our reclaimed pine: junk or fine? Need help ASAP!

Installing sanding and finishing antique heart pine is about 60% of our business. Most of the pine we have been buying lately is reclaimed from textile mills in the CarolinaÂs and northern Georgia. As sb345 said the oil is probably light machine oil that was used on the machines in the textile mills. This oil would cover the wood floors in the mill and soak down into the large beams below the flooring. These beams are now sawn into flooring so some of this flooring will have only a few areas of this oil but others can be completely saturated with this oil. A photo of this flooring would help. I have never seen oil on flooring from milling but I guess it could happen. Tell your finisher to do some test with different finishing systems on the oily areas before trying to finish the entire floor. It would be best to get a finisher experienced with this oily pine but if your finisher does his homework he can be successful. If your are going with a natural finish, Zinsser SealCoat or Parks Universal Sealer (both dewaxed shellac) will almost always seal in the oil and blend the color of the oiled areas to the areas with no oil. We have never had a failure using this sealer under an oil or water-based finish on this oily wood. My favorite finish system for this oily pine is tung oil. After sanding we use two coats of Waterlox Original Sealer and two coats of Waterlox Satin Finish. What ever finish system you use try to get the first coat on as quick as you can after final sanding because the oil will work its way to the surface of the flooring and mix with the finish. thanks! And here's the other suction-cup wall pocket intended for the bathroom that I pressed into service. Before the flashlights stood on that section of the shelf. You had to reach around the tape dispenser to get to them, and they'd fall over, etc. (bcs you were usually reaching for them in the dark) Yay for heavy-duty Scotch mounting strips! also note where the hammer is. If I'd put it on the strip at the top, it would have taken up the entire strip. At first, I just left it standing on its head in the corner, but I wanted that space for the electric screwdriver, and I didn't like that it was loose. I'd purchased a 7"-long magnetic strip, so I put it deep in the triangle area, where it's hard to store anything else, and stuck the hammer to it. Keeps the hammer out of the way, in the same spot always, and it won't fall over, etc. Also note the gap BEHIND the drawer unit, and the note on the wall. In that gap are some things that I wasn't willing to get rid of but may not need anytime soon--like extra bleach pens, extra trash-can bags, and the magnetic strips that go w/ the blackout curtains. And on the left, Command hooks (and some other off-brand stick-on cup hooks) for the extension cords--this is really having a big effect, too.

I tried get my DH to buy a truck this year, but he ended up with a car. What man doesn't want a truck?? Oh, yeah, one with a curbshopping wife!!

Really, he just smiles and lugs around anything I ask him to :-)

A gazebo out of a jungle jim, you did good girl, real good. It's fantastic. I absolutely loved reading your story Manzo, "unsupervised wife with a cargo van and DH rolling eyes" - way too funny. Thanks for this morning's giggle. Thanks for the update on the new plastic spray paint too, I was wondering about that stuff. I want some sort of gazebo in my backyard so bad, I'm jealous. Watch, we're all going to be eyeballing the neighbor kids' backyards and seeing how wrecked their play stuff is!!

Lucky indeed, and VERY creative. NEVER would have thought of using those materials for a gazebo. Ever since I borrowed my handyman's truck to gather bricks, I've wanted one, but gonna stay w/my Jeep. It holds quite a lot of junk. Can't wait to see your new toy all planted up. Darlin' little bench to sit upon to survey your Queendom.

Whaaaa! I wanna see it! I made my junk gazebo out of a satellite dish, old metal porch supports and glass totems. I'm dying to see how that one is made. It sounds fabulous!
