Teased by Indian 'Mock' Strawberries - future use?

So, I was so disappointed to realize that what I thought were wild strawberries in my yard are actually Indian "Mock" strawberries. I compared the images of the plants I had dug up to images online, plus, when I crushed a berry, it had no smell whatsoever. I can't remember what the flowers looked like, so no dice on that comparison.

Now, onto my question - Once the dug up plants were established, I was planning on placing them next to a chain link fence and training the runners to climb said fence. I was initially hoping for edible berries but know that isn't going to happen now. Can these berries be trained to climb or do the runners need to be rooted in the soil?

Thanks!

Sarah
