Could someone explain POTM?

Please explain how the POTM works. I haven't been on Garden Web long and can only guess from what was written on other posts. Thanks, Linda

POTM means Project of the Month. For January it's making a Fairy Garden or something for the fairies. For February it's making something that moves and has a primary color in it - if I understood next month's correctly. lol

Linda, I think when I first came on, there was one person who was in charge, giving a subject for the POTM (I thought it was pot of the month, lol) They would put the pics together in FAQs I think or ??. They got tired or busy elsewhere and so we had another take over. She got to busy with family so it was just hanging. Now I could see they both did a fantastic job. So someone would say what is it, what about and off we would go. I was often anxious to find out by the first of the month so I could finally get it posted by the end...lol. Then a couple of months ago, someone said ok what is it...so I tagged them, said you are it, pick next months subject. So off we went. If you pick it one month, you tag for the next one. Just gives more variety to the subject. And no real rules to stick to...no real deadline and no winner, just winners. Nothing mandatory for the list, just for some extra fun. More new ideas to steal and do ourselves, lol. yes, February is something folksy, primary color(s) and has something that moves. boy I have NO ideas but maybe something will pop into my head. June

"Shade tolerant" means the plant may grow and produce in spite of consistent shade for long periods. Of course, no plant can survive with no sun and very few will thrive and grow with little sun, but some are more "tolerant" than others. The other term, "partial shade", refers to a plant location that gets full sun, but not for every hour of the day. Traditionally, roses prefer full sun for about 6-8 hours, but some shade beyond that will prevent color bleaching in the blooms. If that full sun is morning sun, even better.

"Do some varieties of sweet potatoes have better tasting leaves than others?" Absolutely. The kamote that I grew when I lived in San Diego was really great for greens. Not so great for tubers, though, since they wandered up to 3 feet away from the plant in all directions. (!!!) I tried some of the ornamental sweet potatoes several years ago. The leaves had a strong, almost chemical flavor - very unpleasant. If you have an Asian store near you that sells the shoots, it might be the best way to avoid disappointment. Cut the leaves from the stems, place the stems in water, and cook the leaves. If you like them, allow the stems to root (they do so very quickly) and set them out when the weather warms. I do this for the variety that I grow now; it is not the same as what I grew in San Diego, but still good.

if you want to play with the bag culture technique, you can get bags made from panda film, and bulk perlite or tiny rockwool nuggets from carefreegarden.com its a run to waste system so you'll need a very large reservoir. i find watering short but often uses less water than watering long but not as often. my tomatoes outside in rockwool running to waste get 45 seconds every 45 minutes when the sun is pounding down on them. otherwise its 55 seconds every 4 hours. using 4gph drip stakes. i would start with a recirculating system so you can use a tds/ec meter to learn what the plant is doing. if the reading goes up, the plant is being overfertilized, if the reading goes down, the plant wants more fertilizer. in a system where the nutrient runs to waste, you cant really measure the runoff very easily to see what the plant is doing. im trying to say it helps to have a few grows under your belt before going with this method. there are plenty of recirculating drip systems out there. i learned on an american agritech jetstream system.

There is a snapfish site that was set up in 2005 that is still available.I can't do a link, but can give you the following info and maybe you can go to it. There are POTMs for Jan.-Oct for that year. Klynnnn said that she was no longer keeping up the site, so I simply ordered some prints to keep it open, and so far I can get to it. Hope it works.

Thanks Nonacook...I had lost that info when I got new PC ...Spent a couple hours looking at the site...remembering all the POTM....And wondering where some of the junkers are...missing them all...Mary

Is there any way to take those pics and put them in a new account and then add every month

It took me forver to figure out my photo bucket so its lost on me
