Blueberry Variety Trial For Houston Tx
Comments (34)Thanks for your suggestions, bamboo and fruitnut. Given the accolades, I'm very, very anxious to try Sweetcrisp. I should have bought one last year, but better late than never. I've seen a lot of praise for Jewel's flavor, but, based on your description, fruitnut, I might be happier with another variety. I had my eye on Star and Windsor, so I might go with one or both of those. Have either of you (or anyone else) tried Palmetto? From what I can read, it gets very high marks for flavor. As for your question, rayrose, I do have a couple of potted SHB (O'Neal and Southmoon). The lower chill varieties like Sweetcrisp worry me a little bit because of early bloom times, but I can't resist trying them. I already have to protect some of my early bloomers (mostly rabbiteyes), though, so it shouldn't be too much trouble. I used a heavy weight frost blanket over a small greenhouse frame last winter, and that worked very well. Comments (25)Some great looking plants Brady. I tried 10 hardwood cuttings and got zero, zilch to grow. I will try again next year, not sure what I did wrong. It's interesting to see the leaves on your plants versus mine...west to east. Maybe it just the way the photo was taken but your leaves look slightly larger on average than mine do. A local grower was telling me he measured the average leaf size on a plants on the west side (Oregon) and found they are about 30% larger on average for same plant variety. This kind of makes sense when you think about the heat we have on this side versus where you are at. A smaller leaf surface would help conserve water. I think the berries on your Chippewa look bigger than those I had last year....mine were really tiny and way too many of them on one plant. The Chippewa grows like a dense shrub whereas the Reka, Bluecrop, etc. are more spindly. I thinned out my Chippewas this past winter by probably 50% and it has lots of new shoots coming up and wants to be a shrub again. Here's one of my Reka, this plant is 4 1/2 feet tall or so. Then here's a Chippewa which is maybe three feet tall growing right next to the Reka:...See MoreBlueberry Plants Pics
Comments (6)Thanks for the replies! RM, I have been tipping a lot and cut back all the plants after they fruited. The smaller emerald and one of the sweet crisp need to trimmed back a little. I will probably do that tonight. Emeralds branches are thick enough that the probably don't need it but some of them make it hard to water with out getting it on the leafs. The black berries need a dead man on both ends of the trellis. The 4x4 posts on the ends are leaning a little too far and every time I tighten the wires they pull in more....See Moreearly blueberries for z7 NC?
Comments (4)I started picking a few Reka berries in late May, O'Neal during the first week of June, and Southmoon and Duke during the second week of June. This was my first year for the first three, and Duke definitely suffered in comparison. It's still good (it's a blueberry, after all), but I really enjoyed the plump, sweet O'Neal and Southmoon berries. Reka was very good, as well, with more tartness than the other two. What are you still picking at this point? My Tifblue, Bluebelle, and Brightwells are winding down -- they'll probably be finished in another week or so. I'm hoping to extend my season next year with some Ocholockonee and Centurion rabbiteyes that I'm currently growing out, both of which are supposed to be very late. EDIT: Never mind the question, Eric. I just read your other post, and it's very helpful. I'll continue the conversation in that thread since it's OT for this one.
