Hi Laura, Am thinking it's not a good idea, what if cat gets it in their eyes? Pls. check out pet shops which sell a product called 'Bitter Apple' made for this particular purpose. Don't know abt wiping the plant down w/ citrus, might be too acidic for it. How abt some strips of citrus peels on top of the mix, the plant shouldn't mind & hopefully it'll deter the cat.

Are you sure it was bunnies? I thought rabbits were eating my sugar snap peas years ago, and one day after I had surgery and was off work I sat in the yard and read a magazine and watched. It was starlings. They would snip the plant off and swallow the top down. Darn birds!

That happened to me too! Dogs must like them! They came back, although one died 2 years later. Probably for unrelated reasons. One is doing good! So don't give up yet! I would clean the cuts up, try to remove rough edges. Here is the one that is still alive. It's 4th leaf now, but I lost the first two years really. Hard to see clearly. it is a Liberty Cultivar. The other was a Toro, and it was a excellent tasting berry. I'm buying another this spring. I'm not sure why it died? I think the pH got too low, or it dried out, or was burned badly by fertilizer? Unsure what happened? Bummed as it produced the last two years. Now having to start over with it. At least I have others!

Have you cleaned this area up for the pic? Were there leaves or pieces of leaves on the ground? If there was nothing on the ground, that eliminates rabbits and cutworms...but not deer..deer can jump a 7' fence easily, and it's interesting that they seem to be chopped off at the same height, which also suggests deer..coons knock things over when eating them, and ground hogs eat right down to soil level..what part of the country are you in? you may have other things that will eat beans, too.
