Chewed zucchini plants

Hi:

I have a set of zucchini plants, rather large. Some of them, about to be 100% of them, have had the stem chewed through (I think) at the entrance to the ground, at the root.

Never seen an animal, was spraying with bobbex because something was eating the flowers, but it has killed plants while they were producing fruit.

No hints of animal activity, no deer, rabbits, nothing seen, tracks or otherwise. No snails, insects, nothing.

Any ideas? I grew on a vegetable farm here in CT and never saw such a thing. Stolen and eaten fruit? Yes. Stems chewed at the ground? Never even heard of it.
