I think they'll do well. I will be sowing lettuces in another couple of weeks directly in the garden.

I direct sowed four more rows of assorted leaf lettuce the last week of July. They are doing extremely well, ready to harvest soon. I was hoping I'd have lettuce up til October but not sure about that. If you are sowing seed in a couple of weeks, I may do the same. What variety are you planting? I did Red Sails, Green Ice and a Curly Black Seeded Simpson.

I had sowed Radiccio too but was surprised that it was not the head variety but a tall green leafy herb.

I am in zone 8 and my lettuce, directly sown , are germinating. Maybe I started a week or so early but I figure by the time they grow a bit the weather will cool off and I will have a head start.

All of you guys are in zone 5 and could have started lettuce even earlier. It is true that lettuce likes cool weather but it will not grow much when it gets cold and they will hang in there, waiting to be picked.

I have sown winter lettuces in early Sept for many years and get a crop, covered eventually with row covers, deep into November.

BTW, schoolhouse, radicchio is normally sown early in the season, makes green leafy growth, and is cut back around labor day, at which point it then grows the head. Newer varieties are less touchy about how and when the cutting back is done, but it's good to have full directions.

I've always grown the purple/white head variety, putting out transplants in Spring; never tried sowing seed. But for some reason, I was thinking there was the leafy herbal looking radicchio and then there was the variety that forms heads; however the seed packet has a picture of a beautiful little head of radicchio on it so you're right. It just depends upon at what stage you want to harvest it I guess. I'll try cutting off the green leaves later and see what happens. Thanks!

My brain is fuzzy this morning - the transplants I put out in the Spring usually look like small green leafy heads of lettuce, then gradually become mottled purple.
