Romaine lettuce - too late to plant?

I decided to put in a third planting of Romaine transplants and went to the local greenhouse to buy some. She had one large tray left so I took a six pack of plants. When I went to pay she said, "You just take those and see what you can do with them". Ok - free of charge. The lady also told me to cut off the leafy tops of the 8" lettuces before planting them. Which I did and noticed a lot of milk.

Is it likely I'll get some nice Romaine yet or will they be very bitter?
