Many of us are thinking about the 7th Anniversary of 9-11.

I know I am. But also, today is the 7th anniversary of my Mom's passing. I still have a huge hole in my heart and life with her gone.

And on that morning of 9-11, Jason was enduring his biggest surgery at the time. To try and give him a functional left hand. His eyes were sewn shut still, healing, so he couldn't even watch what was happening to our country. He was listening but unable to see the horror of the pictures we all were witnessing. He'd gotten to tell my Mom goodbye the night before she died, tho he hadn't SEEN her since he was burned 5 months before. 2001 was a very difficult year.

On a good note, Jason called me and said the TV crew for "First 48" on A&E came back to town to do a follow-up story with him last night. The homicide they featured with Jas 3 yrs ago finally came to a conclusion with the guy's conviction. What is really neat is they aren't just doing a post script on that case. They are filming updates on their TOP FIVE shows, and Jason's episode was one of them. (considering how much they rerun that show, I'm not too surprised. LOL). Anyway, the new show will be aired on OCT 14th. I can't wait to see it.

Meanwhile, tonight and tomorrow are for memories I think.

Can't shut them out, and not sure I would even want to.

Thanks for being here, you always help so much even at times you probably don't know you are doing so.

I will be in Indiana on Oct 14th and won't be able to see it....Limited tv there.
Memories are sometimes bittersweet.....

HI Karen,

You know, 2001 was a difficult for me as well. My Grandpa died in February. Then my Dad was going through all his issues with the Parkinson's and placing him in good care facilities. And then 9-11 happened! My Dad passed on Oct 27th of that year too. Halloween I hadn't been too much into ever before---and it had got to be a hard time for me as well. Even though it is hard to remember the difficulties, memory is good because it CAN keep the heart soft. I'm helping a friend here now who is going through the death of a student of hers. IT was a quarduple homicide here in my city just this Tuesday. When pain of mourning comes into our lives it's so easy for one to take the easy way out. Drugs, alcohol, medication are all escapes, but the emotional pain always presents itself at the end. Mourning is a natural process. I look at it as God showing us what he must feel everyday--all the time.

I am so happy for Brian and his successes! To have that person convicted must give him a sigh of relief. And for The First 48 to do another show on his progress since is absolutely exciting! I'll let my MIL know....I'm sure she is anticipating that show!

Hugs from a little West of you. Do you need a shoulder pad to mop up your tears? Mine are ready and BTW, can I use your mop soaking shoulder pads to cry on myself? :-)

It's kinda funny in a way. When we divorced over 11 years ago, the property was only worth $9,000 but now it's worth over $54,000. The judge awarded the X only $4,500. I plan to take the next 2-3 years moving plants. Some of the roses were from my great-grandma's property and she died almost 50 years ago. There are some of her flowering crab apples that I can take runners from too. Then there are roses that were my grandma's and she's been gone for 25 years. And roses from my dad and mom who have been gone for 30 and 10 years. Plants from an elderly lady at church who's been gone a long time. Things that to me are irreplaceable. The property was 6.25 acres. So I'll hang onto it a while. I've already had 2 offers to sell it. They told me I could still come get my plants even after they bought it, but I don't want to risk losing them. Our "new" home is marvelous. About 30 years old, but built with the highest quality. This year we have to paint the exterior. Last year we stained the deck. Then next year I'd like to do some painting and light remodeling. It has 4 BRs, 2 baths, family room, kitchen and living room. So much more room than the old place. The lawn is over 3 acres and beautiful with numerous retaining wall beds all over the place and a little pond. The pond liner leaked, but I bought a swimming pool liner on clearance for $5 and it worked great. Even had a frog move into it for the summer. Altogether we have 20 acres with maybe 5 acres of field and then the balance is deep woods adjoining thousands of acres of state land. A small river runs along the east and south borders.

Ha, postage size yards... that would be me. I live in New York City, proper, so this is a big yard comparatively. It's roughly 30x30 feet in the back. We have about 16 roses in the back, and 3 on the side. This is their 3rd year in the ground, so just starting to get to a good size. I do a 2 step cleanup for the roses, the first cut is usually late November. Just enough for good measure for winter, usually once most of the leaves have dropped, and I'll do another shaping in early march. I put mulch on after I've done any requisite fall bulbs. But we have such a small space, I garden very intensly, I've dug a lot of organics in, made somewhat of a raised bed with rocks I dug out of the ground, so the point in relation to the pruning, is that in a good year, these roses get gigantic, even though it's North facing (in summer it gets full sun 12 hours a day). Most are hybrid Teas or similar high maintenance, particularly because they are so close and get drip irrigation, there's always plenty of moisture. The first cleanup takes about 3 big garbage bags after I've tied up the stems and cinched them tight in burlap so they won't cut through the bags. It takes me most of the day with other various cleanup tasks. We're looking to start a family and get a larger house with yard, so I'd be taking most of these with me, and revert it back to grass or similar low maintenance plants. I love the roses, but I need more space for them. You can see the progression over a year in the pictures below. Each picture links to a collection you can see more pictures at that time of year. The pictures are "roughly" March, May, June, September. Each link goes to the collection. I've ommitted the July-August picture, because honestly with the veggies, you can't even see the roses! It's so overgrown... June is the prettiest month, nothing else has caught up yet.

You are such a clone to my favorite brother in law AND my father. I was raised in VWs. Old school. My dad was an obsessed mechanic who had a love of German made vehicles. He adjusted the valves on our VWs (there were two, a 62 beetle and a 64 bus) constantly. I assert that he may have been the only early VW owner who never sucked a valve. He seriously understood the early motors. My Dad insulated the crap out of our VWs (foam rubber insulation inside, coated with *something* not flammable). He installed more and needed gauges that spoke to him, whatever they said. Protection that gave way with the noise reduction. He demanded both. I spent many a night in that 1964 VW bus that was burgundy and white. Daddy had a traveling gene and a love of road maps that avoided regular routes. We almost pushed the Bus up Pike's Peak and always slept in it, (he made a homemade bed in the back of a removed seat, out of wood and foam padding. Kids slept on the two remaining seats, smallest kid straddled the front gear shift.)We often slept on the side of the road. (Hated it when we ended up near railroad tracks.) In my family, God help you if you had to turn over at night. Daddy liked his sleep and was easily disturbed. No making the car shake by turning positions and he always knew. Little biting bugs in Kansas came right through the vents. Uh ugh. We started to notice the bites almost immediately. Then there was no relief at all. I was raised with German motors. My dad and now my BIL. Been there and done that.

Due to dual blood thinner therapy, I can no longer take Advil or extra aspirin or things like Celebrex for my RA, migraines or post stroke centralized pain and CBD is not orally recommended with warfarin and I have to be careful with transdermal treatments as well so I explored other chronic pain treatments and found that many studies show that eating more fiber acts as a prebiotic (which are more helpful long term than taking probiotics) that will lower the antibodies and inflammation that cause most diseases like lupus, diabetes, many cancers and RA. I also found many studies linking stress reduction therapies, ACT ( a form of cbt for chronic pain ) and daily moderate exercise to lower inflammation levels and thus pain reduction. I have since my stroke started a practice of eating 40 grams of fiber per day, walking a minimum of thirty minutes daily and meditating fifteen minutes every morning when I wake at 5:45 and again as I fall asleep at 9:45. I see a therapist weekly for Acceptance and commitment therapy and emdr( eye movement desensitization reprocessing) for PTSD and I no longer notice my pain at alll. Pain is preceived by our brains and we can dampen that part of our brain with training instead of with CBD, pot and opioids ( which work by altering the part of the brain that senses pain). In addition to pain management I also have become serum negative for RA, lupus and antiphospholipid syndrome. My CRP and sed rate have lowered significantly and I wake up awake and I no longer suffer from my severe anxiety disorder and depression. Fiber, exercise and meditation have changed my life and I only regret that it took two strokes for me to start on this path to a better life.

My heart goes out to you this morning, to both of you. I know that it brings back a lot of memories for you, Karen. I was thinking of you this morning before I left for work. We are holding you up here, all of us. Just try to look at the blessings that you have, what wonderful news that is for Jason, your young man is quite the celebrity now, and think of all the people he has reached because of the turn of events in his life. I know I, for one, am truly, truly inspired by his life. And remember, your mom is with you always, she is watching over you right now, just like a mom always will. YOU are a blessing to us all, Karen. We are with you today in prayer and spirit, that's what we have shown everyone, WE STILL STAND UNITED, NO MATTER WHAT!!
Jules, I had no idea what you went through. I am so sorry for the passing of your dad and grandpa that year, but I am also so proud of you for being the ever-cheerful person that you are. You are always so kind and thoughtful to everyone and I admire you for that. My sisters, put that smile on and be proud today, we are here for a reason-
NO ONE CAN KEEP US DOWN, we are still a God-fearing country with love and pride in our hearts and we still stand for our country.

MY wonderful DH died suddenly Sept.13, '85. So I have some pain this time of year but now more sweet memories. I'm blessed to still have my folks. Sorry Jules & Karen that your pain is still very close it will ease with time. I think Jason is a true hero to turn his life to be am example for others & not hid his burns. That is a hero! Then he puts himself out there time & again knowing it will help others. You must be so proud. Prayers & a gentle hug for you all & any others suffering from 9/11 or other personal tragedies. Jan

Alot Of wonderful things have been said. Karen you are a wonderful caring person and soo much stronger than I could ever be. You are in my thoughts and prayers always. As well as Jason. I am writing down the date to watch the show. I have not seen the first one.

My heart goes out to you as well Jules. I sometimes wonder how God deals with his children going through soo much pain and suffering.

We have such a wonderful family here... all of us praying for each other.

Jules, good idea....shoulder pads to mop tears. LOL. I better stop throwing those things away huh? I'm sorry you had such a rough 2001 also. That's horrible about your friend's student murdered.
Sunny, I'm glad the memories are stronger than the pain now.

Bright, no one knows how strong they are till they HAVE to be. Had anyone told me what I was facing, well I wouldn't haven't given myself a chance of getting thru it.
They still rerun that First 48 episode several times a year.
Its #37 from their 3rd season, and they show two stories...
"Dead Man Running" and "Crash". Crash is the homicide that Jas was working on. So you might catch it one of these days.

Hi all~

I sometimes forget to check the conversations side of the GJ site, so I'm a little late in adding my support to you Karen. I think that both your son and you are very brave folks and strong for being able to make it through such trying times during those years. I know that it must still be hard some days when the memories come flooding back. I know in my own life, there are days that are just harder than others when something will trigger a memory and I can relive the day as if it just happened. I am just grateful to God that time does indeed make the hard times easier to bear. I am thinking of you, your son, and your family and hope that the peace of God will carry you through to brighter days ahead!

I wish I had cable so I could look for that show featuring Jason! He is a wonderful inspiration to us all and you are as well with your strength, compassion and kindness despite all that you have been through. It is so easy for people to feel sorry for themselves and turn spiteful and hateful when faced with so many sad events.

And thanks for reminding us to remember the horrors of 9/11. It is something that our country should never forget!
