Sunnyca couldn't get logged in to "conversations" side ...so she posted on my thread...here is her note:

"Love it all Jeanne, I went on conversations & tried to log-in since they said I was off, it keeps coming up that there is no GJF Ha! Sorry to hijack your post but I will be gone for awhile. Mom in hospital 9 days with AF & trying to care for dad(stroke 1 yr ago) at home. Bro. had to fly to East Coast for business. Other bro. came in sick-so it goes .I'm on my own except for DD some & lady taking care of dad some mornings(& snooping through the house!!) So I've got to stay there for few days~.~, talk to you all later & miss you! Jan"

KY2011, a plan will not be useful to you in creating a landscape design unless it is accurately drawn--with the distances being measured--and your's is not. One 16' distance is shown at more than 3 times the length of an 8' distance and many other measurements are obviously not proportionately correct. You'll can print out a scale that will allow you to measure the distances. (Link below. Use the inch-decimal--sixth one down--to create a plan that is 1" = 10". That will probably work the best. Be sure to disable "shrink to fit" when you print.) The measured plan allows one to fit in objects that are also measured ... to make sure that there is room for everything and that one has placed enough objects (plants) in the plan. It allows one to see that the distances between objects are properly proportioned, for best use of the space being created. This brings up another point that plants shown in your plan are not well or realistically arranged. Some are too close to the house, but too far from one another in the rows. The "bump-out" portion of the building is not shown, so plants march across the front of the house as if it weren't there. This will not work in real life. The Japanese maple could not be placed as you have it. That's a space sized for a Hosta. (The 6' - 8' ht. you've marked is at one stage of its life, but is not its end height.) A nice landscape uses plants to solve problems and create a positive image. It's not just placing one's favorite decorations (plants) wherever they can be squeezed in around the yard. There's no reason a homeowner can't do their own landscape design, if they're willing to use the methods professionals use and also learn a lot about plants. I suggest that you draw an accurate plan and re-post (without plants shown.) Then you could probably get suggestions for better plant placement. You should also be thinking about what architectural shortcomings need enhancing by plants. The size of the house has been mentioned. You've also mentioned the "concrete at the porch," but it's far enough away that it doesn't look any different than the siding, and and I don't get the impression you're anxious to hide that. While its finish at close range might not be the greatest, couldn't some paint take care of it?. Why not start with that and see if you detest it as much? One person mentioned hiding the bottom of the stone facade. (A vine on a custom trellis or a clipped hedge could take care of it with the least bulk.) What about hiding the bottom of the "bump-out." With no architectural devices appearing to support it (same as stone facade) it looks like it defies the laws of nature and so would be better hidden. Street trees help frame the house (as well as provide a protective ceiling at the street) so why not pick ones that can be more readily limbed up in order to create the view below? If you don't do the things that need be done, you'll end up with the typical "builder's landscape" ... something to rip out just as soon as, or shortly after it becomes grown. I should clarify - it's not that we're 'evacuated', a person's fire plan is to either stay and fight or leave. So on high fire risk days, we go! It's still like an evacuation. So yes, we left again and guess what? Monday a fire breaks out a couple of towns away from where we were staying!! But DH's nephew has everything ready to defend his house so I watched them get their fire plan into action which was to top up their ginormous water tank, check the sprinkler system that's on the roof, fill pails with water and have mops by the pails then put them all around the house so that if a cinder falls you can douse it with a wet mop, change into all cotton clothing which is slower to burn, get wool blankets out to wet and put over yourself... have I missed anything? Oh yeah, then sit on the porch and watch the smoke and wind, listen to the news, and wait to see if the fire spreads our way. To be honest, we would have been safer if we stayed home! But on Monday the big worry was south east of here and, fortunately, nothing happened. Tomorrow, Friday, is another high risk day but I'm not sure if we're going to the nephew's house. Maybe we'll just spend the day at the mall. Then, if something happens in our area we'll go to the nephew's house. I don't know. This is getting very tiresome. I want these fires to stop already but someone told me she heard they were predicting a few more months before it's all settled. MONTHS!! And then yesterday we saw a new plume of smoke in the hills out yonder. So I called 000, our 911, and told the lady that I saw smoke coming from a hilltop but I couldn't tell her the name of the hill top and was just guessing about the area the hilltop was in. She suggested I check the CFA website to see if there was anything written there about the plume but I said it just started as I had been watching the mountains all morning and this one area suddendly started smoking - I called her as soon as I saw the plume of smoke. The lady asked if I saw flames. I said I was too far to see flames so she gave me this xyz number to call and report it. So I call xyz and I'm talking to this guy who seems absolutely clueless as to what to do and eventually suggest a number to call. And guess what number he gves me? xyz... I yelled at him and said that it's his number and asked him if he didn't know his own number. Sheesh. So then he gave me another number and I speak to that person who eventually says she'll transfer me to somebody else who might be able to help. So I'm talking to this lady and she says I've called the wrong number and that I have to call 000. I tell her that's who I started with but they didn't want to know. So this lady asked if I could see flames and I said no and then she said that 000 wouldn't do anything about it until ya saw flames. So I said, "Well, isn't it a bit too late by then? I mean, if you see flames the fire's on ya and you're dead." She was silent. So I then threatened to tell a popular news journalist here about the inefficiency and run around I was receiving and there was a big silence so the lady switched me to someone else and they said a fire truck would come by to have a look. So from when I first called to when the fire dept came was about 1 hour. The fire crew said it was a flare up within contained lines, and really that was what I was trying to find out, if the new fire was in a containment area, or even backburning by the CFA itself, or something new that needed watching. I kinda think it turned into something they needed to watch because after dark we could see trucks up there. I never felt threatened by this fire cuz it really is too far from my place, but it was extremely frustrating that when I reported it, no one seemed to want to respond. Thanks Luvs and Karen. Karen, your arm feeling any better?? LOL SHould probably ask that on 'your' thread. lol Thanks Nona. Why can't Bella write on here? I think that very weird. Glad to hear her son was safe. Well, will fill you in as it happens... or, as I'd prefer, DOESN'T happen. ;-)

Thanks, Jeanne for posting this! Mom is home & already wanting to "get off the meds" so fun times a-comin" at 89 you can't get through anymore!! I get a break between lunch & dinner & sleep at home now as she is keeping AC going 24/7. I've had trouble with AC for 30 yrs. So nice to have a little break & get to shower at home & water & mow the lawns. Thanks for the prayers & well wishes! If she does it her way we will be back in ER soon! She had a very close call & was stable. Time will tell! Oh, we are finally getting a heat wave coolest summer I can remember so has been nice! Thanks again Jeanne! Hope you are doing OK Sylvia, haven't checked any posts yet! Jan

Glad to hear your mom is doing better for now. Hope she behaves and takes her meds. Boy, that sure gives me flashbacks to how my mother wouldn't listen to the doctor's advice! I hope your life returns to normal soon. I will keep you in my prayers. (((((HUGS)))))

Sorry to hear about the snooping caretaker! Good help is so hard to get now days.

She didn't just snoop, I went out & found that she had taken tools & I fired her. So I'm doing it all while checking out a couple of leads on private caretakers that others really liked. Time will tell. Thanks for prayers & keep them coming! They did cut mom's meds in 1/2 so she feels better. Jan

Hired a nice lady with 18 yrs experience working in an adult daycare but since CA. is broke her hours got cut & she needed a part time job so 20 hrs -5days 4 hrs in morning is perfect for her as she just works afternoons.Came recommended by mom's physical therapist & she is a very happy upbeat lady with lots of hugs! I had a good feeling about her minute she got out of her car. So like my neighbor down the street! I did take pics of inside of whole house so if things ever disappear again I have proof they were there. This lady is CNA & charges less then an agency did. Most people out here have been luck with private hiring then agency. Agency gets minimum wage people. Also didn't care that we got ripped off!! Jan

Glad things are looking up!! I worked home care for a number of years. Sounds to me they do not do much for background checks out there before hiring. Here in MN it is pretty rigid checking before hiring.
My mother just turned 86 and so far doing well on her own. I do travel 60 miles more often to do laundry and the heavy cleaning.
We will be leaving for sunny AZ in a week and a half, but my mother also has her flight booked for mid Nov. Then I will be 2 doors down and much easier to look after!!

Sheila, Glad your mom is doing well on her own. My folks were great until May 17,2010 when dad had the stroke, he had just finished cutting down 2 large fruit trees that were messing up the sewer pipes. He had dug down as deep as 6 ft over most of back yard removing all of the roots. He had cut up all of the wood also with his chain saw, not a couch potato. They enjoy eating & sleep well & only pain killer is 1 baby aspirin a day for each of them to help thin blood so I want to keep them home. New lady is grandma & is good at PT so mom likes that she does her leg better than physical therapist the agency sent. Agency is no longer advertizing & hasn't returned some money that they owed mom. I had tried checking them out but couldn't find anything. Glad they have some checks where you live. The women that had last names I did check out, last 1 I couldn't & that was red flag. I'm not 2 doors down but couple blocks away!! Works out well! Thanks for the nice comments everybody! Jan
